About this blog

Welcome to the humble abode of I. Here I post thoughts of food I eat, mainly snack food products, though if I get motivated enough, there could be something else.

I am from Canada, so I figure this blog title would be a good self-descriptor. AKA, explain why I do or don't cover certain products, and why they have French on their labels.

Cheez-It Hot & Spicy

So I’ve heard that they pretty much might have just used Tabasco sauce to season this and I mean… It’s similar, I get the idea, but at the same time… not that similar to me. Might just be because it's on something I wouldn't normally put hot sauce on, though. Still, a really nice heat, and I wouldn’t necessarily prefer original Tabasco to a lot of other things. This texture with this particular seasoning though… It feels so familiar, but I am drawing an absolute blank.  Now I’m oddly reminded of various spicy pizzas.... Well, hot sauce & cheese. Hot sauce & Cheez. 8/10

Selection Premium Brownie Chocolate Bar

On the left, the one I bought when it stood out enough for me to try it. On the right, literally the exact same thing with a new branding.
I’ve never seen a more unique flavor in a store brand chocolate, so it was fairly alluring. I figured the dark chocolate wouldn’t be enough of a focus to steer anyone one way or the other and thankfully, I believe that was right. Each individual part melds together in such a brownie way. I’m not one to really taste dark chocolate in most of the brownies I’ve eaten, but while unfortunately a fair bit overpowering, it didn’t take away from anything else enough to not get how brownie this is. 8.5/10 Store brand of: Metro Bought at: Metro

Hershey's Kisses Cereal

I'll be honest this one I had no idea how good it was or not, it just looked really intriguing. Not bad per se, but unfortunately reminds me a lot in flavor and shape to a chocolate strawberry Batman cereal that was particularly bad. It's not strawberry, though. The shape was done well though, otherwise. It's just average for me, and I find way too many cereals to be above average. The milk tastes like Hershey's. Too little too late. 5/10

Drink Thought #4: SunRype Slim Tropical Mango/Mango Tangerine

Tropical Mango I do like mango flavored things more than mangos, similar to the melon dilemma, but I don't know if I like solely mango flavored things more than mixed things like this. I certainly don't if it tastes too much like an actual mango (that one drink was so bizarre in that way, since I never taste mango exactly with flavored things). This obviously has pineapple as well, and I'll say that it is pretty nice. A deeper blend of juices would be even better, but I'll certainly drink more. 7/10 Mango Tangerine
Too much just like sliced mandarin oranges as a drink. 5/10

Snickers Creamy Peanut Butter Squares

Had these ones before in a yellow wrapper clearly from the US. That is mostly what these are. They looked different on the package, but the texture didn’t really feel crunchier from what looked like more peanuts. I guess they have creamy (this) and not so creamy/crunchy (yellow wrapper)? Aha, I found an image that shows the yellow wrapper doesn’t look so crunchy after all. The one I had had 4 squares, but it definitely was that kind of wrapper. This one does get the creamy part down a little more, the other one was pretty close, though. That has me wondering about the other other one I saw while searching for these (crunchy). I’ve basically never had crunchy peanut butter because it wasn’t in the house ever, and when I did, it never worked for what peanut butter is generally used for, but it does seem workable in something like this. Anyway, 8.5/10

Morinaga Chocoball [Peanut]

Oh so this was a dagashi all this time?! Eh, makes sense. It’s been so long since I’ve had a nut/raisin just simply covered in chocolate, and the chocolate tastes exactly like those kinds of things. These are peanuts, and simple, but definitely a bop. 7/10

Nutter Butter

The fudge covered did a dirty. It's so creative the way this is shaped like a peanut, and the fudge covered is just a circle! They're finally here in Canada though, and the peanut shape is done so well, there was only 1 broken cookie in a whole family size package after moving around a fair bit before coming home. And commercial peanut butter cookies are much better than I give them credit for. 8/10

Coconut Cheerios

This feels like the closest to Frosted Cheerios without actually being Frosted Cheerios. The feel is there compared to other varieties, but you have to realize, so is the coconut flavor. It's nice. Some time ago they took away Frosted Cheerios here again and none of us (in the fam) are happy about it. It isn't enough, it really is closer to regular Cheerios with a slight flavoring tacked on compared to others, but even then, I somehow do find it closest to that, out of what we got. 7/10

Lion Bar

I finally got this to try, but I didn’t try it right away. *facepalm* It didn’t blow my expectations away, because I was allured to it for so long, but I half expected it to not meet my expectations, because I literally did nothing to try to get it despite wanting to try it for years. So, what is a Lion Bar, you might ask? It is a bar of wafer, caramel and crisp cereal in milk chocolate. It legit is just filled with a lot of things I especially adore in chocolate bars. And the packaging just did wonders to make it that much more appealing to me. I just now notice that Wikipedia cites Mr. Big as a similar bar in Canada, but idk why, it just never wowed me like this did. The packaging is also much more boring, but that’s kind of a given for Cadbury. They still make great stuff, though. Onto White! 99.99/10 In an attempt to not take as many pictures, some similar enough things were grouped together, which is honestly kind of a blessing. In a way, there could have been more blog posts, but if I don’t think I can say as much about certain things, then it would be more of a waste to separate them so much. I can at least show some more things off this way, and this is one of the best examples. It’s just one simple change to something else I got. All this stuff with white chocolate instead of milk chocolate, though, is weird. It’s good as someone that likes white chocolate, but it’s one of those almost too much even for me kinda things. 7.8/10 too much vanilla.

Compliments Extraaa! Flavour Jalapeño Popper

I've been interested in this store brand strangely enough ever since seeing a video on it. What with it taking a while to find the new Pringles flavour that the US had ever since Groovz came up here, seeing this looked like a good way to settle for the time being. Yeah, ridged chips are harder to break than regular… but these are thinner than most ridged chips I’ve seen. The standard bag still made it obvious a lot would be broken, regardless. The seasoning is definitely more apparent than a lot of chips, especially store brand ones I must say, they do a great job with the branding here. While I don't particularly want jalapeno peppers often, I tend to always really dig chips that are solely jalapeno flavoured chips, and this is no exception. It doesn’t give the pepper texture combined with that outright spicy and jalapeno-esque flavour that an actual jalapeno does, and that’s really cool to me. Just the flavour without being too pepper changes everything, apparently. But as I nitpicked with the bag thing, the thickness that I look for in a ridged chip is at its lowest point here. 7.5/10

P.S. I have got the Pringles, but have yet to taste them.

Hershey's Easter Eggs

They are finally doing it. They are finally producing chocolate eggs of around this size that are not just the Reese ones. It just makes me really excited because...
Chocolate Creme
I’ve seen with a pack of Dairy Milk eggs that while mini, are still a major brand, but... There're still clearly just solid milk chocolate. Now, I don’t fault them for that enough, since Cadbury pretty much invented this size with stuff in them with the Creme Egg, and now on top of the Caramilk also have Chips Ahoy! And Oreo eggs. This isn’t like that, as evidenced by the “Chocolate Creme”. I’m imagining it to be quite like the Fudgee-o ones Cadbury had one year before the ones that ended up sticking, and I am just trying so hard not to drool thinking about it. Must unwrap it (so thankful for the newer packaging of the Cadbury ones where I don’t have to worry about foil accidentally staying on before eating)...  Verdict: It wasn’t in the fridge, but the creme… wasn’t so creamy. It is distinct enough from the outside chocolate to be better than just a solid chocolate egg at this size, but I know the Fudgee-o one and Cadbury eggs in general are creamier on the inside. Still, unbelievably satisfied for something pretty much just chocolate, which once again, the fact that it wasn’t just solid through def helped. 7.5/10
Cookies ‘N’ Creme
And here we got the cookies and creme bits all the way through, instead of just in the middle a la the Oreo ones. That is some intense not at all creamy creme in the middle though, even more than the chocolate one, and less cookie bits than on the outside. And it’s tasting more like I remember Hershey’s Cookies ‘N’ Creme to taste, which is why I prefer Eggies and the like to a full size Cookies ‘N’ Creme bar nowadays as well. 7/10
Reese
The one that isn’t new is the one that is still the best. The design is most unique, too. Another thing I must point out, is that this is by far the sweetest non-frozen Reese product I have personally tried. Compared to anything else, you can really see the sugar in the peanut butter filling, and it is the smoothest peanut butter I have probably ever tasted from it as well. Certainly makes up for the other two not being as creamy. Does this mean I would most prefer it if it was available year ‘round? Harder to say once I’m actually typing this up, but I would still say no, it’s a bit much. 8/10

Drink Thought #3: HeySong Sarsaparilla

Yeah, getting that cross between cola & traditional root beer pretty much. So here’s the thing, the name of this stuck out to me when I was at the Asian grocery (maybe because I would hardly be able to tell what the name of anything else is), so I looked it up to see what it tasted like, and that sounded interesting enough to give it a go. So I went in expecting something, and got what I expected. I don’t think I really want to go in without knowing what to expect, but it’s not like I’ve mixed solely cola with solely root beer before, so it was a new taste nonetheless. The soda can tab almost broke off when opening, which would have made things annoying, but luckily it didn’t. 6.9/10

Cheez-It Crunch Zesty Cheddar Ranch

Yeah, dunno why I tried this one before the Sharp White Cheddar, but it gives a groovy little (localized manga Yuuna speech style better not have rubbed off on me) cooler kick, if you will. It's different for cracker flavours for now, I find. The cracker isn't texturally as similar to another as OG Cheez-its & Cheese Nips, but it does kind of bring to mind 2 other Christie crackers (Crispers & Swiss Cheese, moreso the former), so maybe there are some comparisons to be had, after all. That is a good thing in my book, apart from coincidentally having to puke when eating the All Dressed Crispers, they all generally tasted really good. 8/10

Kellog's Eggo Maple Syrup Cereal

First cereal in blog. By far the most on point cereal in recent times that turn other foods into cereal. So good. It just tastes so much like Eggos. To be fair, it is for once definitely made by the same company. The syrup flavoring is sweet but it doesn't taste like the waffles were completely doused in it like I would usually do, so it's a very good level for this kind of thing, I find. 9/10

Drink Thought #2: Muskmelon Soda

As I thought, it is a similar melon to what they base the flavor of the melon ramune, but there are distinctions that I can't quite put into words. But if you are a melon fan and a soda fan, you should love these kinds of things more than me, who is only a soda fan yet absolutely loves these melon soda I've been able to try. So with certainty, if interested, I suggest checking out an Asian grocery or fast food place (places in food courts are mainly where I see the actual ramune), since those are the types of places that I find these. 9/10   Also, I have a couple other drinks I bought with this I may or may not post something on. A watermelon soda (which is only the second one I've seen after 7-Eleven's brand), and something called "HeySong Sarsaparilla" (I've read others describe it as a sort of mix between cola & root beer, and maybe Mr. Pibb was mentioned. This is the actual type of thing so yes, similar to root beer).

2 Reese's Products from the candy store.

Reese’s stuffed with Crunchy Cookie - Damn good combination. Reese is just about the last thing I saw going the cookies n creme route, and thankfully, they choose to only add the cookie part. Crunchier than stuffing with pieces, less Reese product, yet barely so, and adding something sweeter than more peanut butter, it’s good stuff(ed). I can hardly imagine stuffing them with other things but I’m sure they’ll come up with something. 7.5/10
Reese’s Take 5 - The way the pretzel is used here… expected from the wrapper pic, but surprisingly good that there’s a whole good sized pretzel in there (it comes with 2 of what you see in the pic). It could even be better than the way Hershey’s Gold only has bits in there, it won’t be hard to chew at all really, or at least with this one I’ve tried, there hasn’t been an issue. But yeah, very similar flavors, in a more together package, as much as the caramelized creme does hold it together. Well , same company, so makes some sense, just not as much caramel. 8/10

Cheez-It

It’s… amazing in a simple kind of way. When I looked things up every so often before they officially came to Canada, I heard nothing but amazing things and almost always that Cheese Nips is actual trash in comparison. But little did I know there could have even been anything better, because Cheese Nips were my only choice for the style of cracker that this is in Canada. For. The. Longest. Time. That, and I actually really enjoy Cheese Nips. Does this stack up? You bet. Is it 100% better? Probably. Am I more interested in the other flavours they came out with because as far as I can tell, there’s pretty much nothing like them on the market? Yo bet. Simplicity at its goodest. 7.5/10   Caught & bought through Instagram @junkfoodfunction & a flyer week of Jan 2-9. Experienced Jan 10.

Chitose: Happy new year everyone! This cutie patootie wishes you all nothing but the best! Mitsuhide: ZZZZZZzzz... Hanabusa: Oh, lady Mitsuhide, the celebrations are starting... Mitsuhide: Jump... zzz... Chitose: Jump? That doesn't prove how cute I am! Hanabusa: Maybe she intends me to start things off with a dance... urk... I was not prepared for this... Nobunaga: Looks like this will go on forever without someone to get things properly on topic... Chitose: This wasn't a see how cute I am party? Hanabusa: I'm spared... for now... Nobunaga: Mitsuhide, wake up, we have a snack from Alberia they want us to try. Mitsuhide: I'm in. Chitose: Wha...? Is this all it takes my lady? Nobunaga: I know her the best. Now, it is something called a "Kit Kat" Ebisu: SNACKING ON THE FELINE PERSUASION?! HOW COULD YOU? Mitsuhide: With pleasure... *smirk* Chitose: This is just chocolate, right? Is it in the shape of a cat? Nobunaga: It is just but a name. It isn't even spelled correctly. Hanabusa: Not very elegant, I suppose. Ebisu: Looks like it wasn't just chocolate after all! What is this inside? Cat guts? Hanabusa: Ugh... my stomach... and not from nerves... Chitose: I found a note they left us! The wafer is a crisp, biscuit-type thingy! Nobunaga: Wow, you actually save me from further explanation... wait, is wasn't you, it was probably Cleo. Mitsuhide: Tastes fan-credible, but wasn't there something in particular about this box that readers probably haven't had a million times. Hanabusa: Readers? Is my head next on the list of body parts you wish to hurt? Chitose: Readers, of course!  If it was just us, I may as well not be looking my absolute cutest! Nobunaga: Chill it already, boy. Chitose: Whoopsie! Secrets out! Aw, I wanted to be the one to tell them... Mitsuhide: Read the freakin' note and get on with it. *yawn* Chitose: Let's see here... there are two types of cats here... matcha green tea, and Ruby Ebisu: So they want you to eat a rock? Hanabusa: UGGGHEFUYFYSAAAAA... my stomach can't take much more of these bizarre events... Nobunaga: Get the hell out of here is those are the only things you have to say, actual cat. Ebisu: I AM A HIGH AND MIGHTY DRAGON YOU FOOL. Chitose: It says the ruby is a type of cocoa bean... that has a berry taste to it! Mitsuhide: Cocoa that naturally tastes fruity? Is this magic?  Hanabusa: You never know with this world, could be. Chitose: It tastes so tart and CUTE. And the pink color is adorable! Bliss... Mitsuhide: You tried it before me?! I'll have your head! Hanabusa: Urk... I did not mean to be quite so literal before... Nobunaga: Mitsuhide wouldn't really do that to poor old Chitose. Go on everyone, have a bite. Chitose: I'm young! And let's no forget c- Hanabusa: I must admit, this product is far more exquisite than the regular variety. Quite a 10/10. Mitsuhide: Don't test me, peasants! *OM NOM NOM* Nobunaga: Yes, looks to be highly enjoyed all around. What was the other one again? Chitose: How did we get sidetracked and not try it first? It's matcha everyone! Hanabusa: I hear that the Alberians may have made they're green tea flavors less bitter to be more marketable, I wonder if we would really like it, though. Mitsuhide: It looks pretty alike to our Hinomotoan variety, though. Nobunaga: Er, Mitsuhide, are you saying you are actually familiar with this product? Mitsuhide: What's a clan leader got to do besides eat and... a... *snore* Hanabusa: A... a lot... just thinking about it makes me... oh... oh my stomach... Nobunaga: You have reached a point a while ago where I should have taken you away to rest. Hanabusa: I am in your care... Chitose: Oh, it's bitter... 10/10... While 'm at it, the regular is a classic to, our ratings just can't be comparing these others solely to it, you know?   *Rating of the Matcha Green Tea does not reflect the owner of this blog, who has already done a review on it. These "Hinomotoans" are just Japanese, really. *shot* **Also, no clue what went through my mind to where I actually thought up enough dialogue between fictional characters to try and do it this way. None at all.

~ MINI MINI REVIEW ~ MATCHA GREEN TEA KIT KAT

*originally taken from thoughts that were posted on YCM at one point or another, as a companion piece to another blog post I shall be posting this month* A solid 7/10. I’ve never tried the green tea Kit Kat until they actually brought it over here, but I ordered the Japanese one off Amazon "recently" as well. That one is understandably more bitter but I still like it, it was good for waking up right away when I wanted to one day because I had it right next to my bed for some reason.

Ferrero Golden Gallery

Now, I got this on clearance after the holidays. So this is less a post on this, and more the things inside, in case for whatever unlikely reason, someone that sees this becomes interested in any of them and sees them in some other type of packaging maybe? | Ferrero Manderly | 9.5/10 Oh this one has to be the messiest one, especially to try and get a picture of. Hazelnut filling with almond centre? Wow… this is like that thing!! The Ferrero Duplo white I got at the European grocery. Tastes so similar... Another time I wish I got more pictures of what I got there. That was a bar, this is a thing. A premium specialty. Honestly not a perfect score just because it is the messiest one, but sometimes that really helps things, which it still kinda does here. 8/10 | Ferrero Delicius |
Very similar to their poster baby, Ferrero Rocher, only less nutty, more dark. And not so much dark that I've had enough before I finish it, I mean they are only small things. It doesn't describe itself as having any kind of nut, unlike the others, but I do think there are very small bits of something in there, if you're wary of that. | Ferrero Tenderly biancoretti | 7.5/10
This one is more like a standard chocolate, but very fine white chocolate and a filling with crunchy almonds.
8/10 | Ferrero Rocher | Boss man. Peace.

Kit Kat Senses Collection

Oh Chiri gonna love these. They’re like small Chunkys. Happy new year! Yeah, I knew going in from a review on Food Review UK that these things were probably going to be a much different format than usual, and am so glad these came to Canada. They are a little different though... caramel looked like it might have been somewhat different, and there was double chocolate instead of mocha (and they always complain about chocolaty things that get chocolaty flavours, haha. And dang, they actually had a more variety dessert one this year.  Hazelnut Crunch - So creamy and hazenutty… hmmm.
Caramel Burst - And the caramel was so juicy… well that doesn’t make sense, but it reminded me most of what I remember of Caramilk, so melty and everything. Definitely a far better kind than the crunchy bits that another variety of Kit Kat had.
Creamy Mocha - I’ve avoided coffee flavored things since Coffee Crisp way back in the day, and I still never want to have coffee itself, but there was another mocha flavored chocolate experience I had because holidays that was damn straight phenomenal so I decided I had to get the collection box of all three flavours of Senses. Yeah idk what it is but this mocha stuff is amazing.
All great 9/10s.
*looks up mocha* This is a chocolate flavoured coffee flavoured chocolate. Hilarious.

Drink Thought #1: BARR Limeade

The carbonation is real. I knew what I was getting into with "flavouring" as an ingredient. Very much closer to Crush in that regard (not that I've ever had a chance to try a lime flavoured Crush), but there is something so UK about the taste here. I can mostly guess maybe that safflower concentrate, but well. Not bad, I really like it but for solely lime flavoured pop it doesn't hold a candle to lime Jarritos or the Mello Yellow Limeade I can get at Coke Cola Freestyle Machines. I can only guess that by "Great Value 49p" and my trying to figure out the currency exchange it is close to $0.90 CAD so... definitely no big brand pricing, makes sense that it isn't quite up to snuff. 6.5/10

First 5 Milka Experiences

| Whole Hazelnuts | 7.5/10
This was the one bar I have ever had where the contents just made the texture so thoroughly different before you even open the wrapping. The hazelnuts were just bursting out more than other whole Hazelnut products I have had since then, but this was my first experience with them. This is certainly for a certain type of person, and now I'm a little more into whole hazelnuts, but nah man. The taste was absolutely astounding, though. 5.5/10 | Strawberry (yogurt cream) | Didn't realize before I went to open it that it was a yogurt type strawberry filling. Goes together worse than I'd have hoped, but the strawberry flavor was still nice on top of that really high quality alpine Milka chocolate.
| Chips Ahoy! | 9.5/10 Cookie in bar form! Chips Ahoy! is the best!! Okay, so it isn't just literally cookies the shape of a bar, but I'm actually so glad that the company that sells these cookies can partner with a chocolate bar that I've newly found to be higher quality than some others, even though the Oreo Dairy Milk is probably just as phenomenal to me too. 7/10 | Collage with Caramel | I must say, when the potential for wanting to split a bar perfectly in half comes up, this is the better bar. From what I recall, anyway. I really should take pictures of the actual bars for these especially. I've had differently shaped Milka now from the same size bars, but it could easily be where they were imported from or something. I'll try to find pictures of them… With this one, it is very similar in taste to the delicious Chips Ahoy, but with added scrumptious caramel taste in there. Be wary, it is hard bits of caramel, not my favorite for a bar, and it was harder than a type of Kit Kat's caramel I tried, but if you are careful, it is easier on your mouth, I found (the Kit Kat one was just too freakin chewy). Or could be it wasn't room temperature enough, I kinda didn't wait as long as most things lately after taking it out of the fridge. It does look like that probably isn't the case from the packaging, though.
  | LU (biscuits) | 10/10 Chips Ahoy the best? Nah fam, let me introduce you to LU. I've heard of similar things, but it does seem pretty novel for literally a chocolate bar. I greatly enjoyed this one, even compared to all the others. When they do these snack combos well, like really really well, I damn well appreciate it intensely. That's just about how I can describe this one. The biscuit is the type of biscuit that is pretty much like a cookie, yeah. ~BONUS 1/3~
Literally two days after trying and typing that out: I did see a similar product by Ritter Sport. Oh, so more properly sold in this country, cool. Both do it quite we'll in different ways. Milka with the biscuit pieces on top of the bar, Ritter has in all encased in the chocolate, and I was surprised at how sweet that one tasted. It was too sweet to consume as often as I wish I could the Milka one, even. Perhaps in a way, that is somewhat expected of something with Sport in the name. 7.5/10 ~BONUS 2/3~ I found some examples of these crazy shapes! Too bad they look so much more beat up than any of the ones I bought were.  ~BONUS 3/3~ *These were all bought and consumed throughout the year, not at once.

Caffarel Nocciolotto

It was a little after last Christmas that a found out what a good job Italy does with chocolate.   And this was exactly what it basically looked like! I looked up what Gianduia was, and sure enough, chocolate hazelnut spread. This company's brand, I might add. As if it wasn't already chocolatey and hazelnutty enough already, that just had to make it so nice and creamy on the inside, when hazelnut chocolate bars usually are not. I couldn't get a picture like on the wrapper where it shows half a hazelnut, it's a small bar and whole hazelnuts. Anytime I took a bit I just ate a whole hazelnut, or 0% of one. That's marketing for ya, but won't stop how extremely pleasing to my taste buds this was. 9.5/10 Thankfully my local grocery store is doing some sort of taste of Italy right now, I did not see this many Italian looking treats before, it was only obvious enough with the Baci. Hope some of it stays, but before too long, dang, I'm gonna have to pick up a couple more of these.

Kinder Country

If you click into the Imgur link, you'd see the words are from Germany. Carrying on. So here we have the first of some things I'll be taking a look at from some random grocery store I was near a couple days ago. The place calls itself "a european food experience" and I found plenty to support that claim. Puffed wheat type cereal instead of crispy rice is an interesting take, and depending on how many times I'm able to go back, I would definitely not mind getting another some time. It complements Kinder's delicious chocolate that is very appropriate for kids surprisingly well, but then I'm left to wonder that it must have something to do with still having that milky filling. Like omg, that is quite a good fit. Even still, not the type of grains I prefer in my chocolate, as weird as that sounds. All in all, was the least interesting of the chocolates I ended up getting just yet for me, kind of supports that thought, but is really good in it's own way, just gets a 6.5/10.
