  1. Higher beings, these words are for you alone. Pass beneath the shadow of The Great Tree and be beholden to our laws. For here stands the Kingdom of Oakshade. Built in the embrace of The Great Tree, witness to our glory. Domain of the Ebon Lady, our Mother, Queen, and Goddess. I've been really into Hollow Knight lately (and to a lesser extent Dark Souls but not as much) so I've decided I want to run a game in a Kingdom of my own devising. If you have not played or are otherwise unfamiliar with Hollow Knight, it's a Soulslike Metroidvania set in the ruins of an underground kingdom of bug people. Pretty basic, but I thought I'd give it my own spin. The Great Tree. It towers overhead, spreading ever outward-- it is the ground beneath us, the firmament above. It is the chain that binds them together, and the pillar that forces them apart. It is our very world, the Great Tree, and the wilderness that grows from its roots and branches should be respected and feared. From the palaces of Canopy down to the catacombs of Deeproot, and to the distant wilds all around, this tree has given us our lives. No doubt, if you've come from distant lands, as many do, you've heard rumors of a secret war between shadow and fire-- nonsense about shadow creatures rising from the depths, and a cult of some supposed king. It's poppycock-- foolhardy nonsense and conspiracy. If such a war were going on, we'd scarcely be able to ignore it. And who would ever serve a bug who calls himself "The Crimson King?" Ridiculous. Ah, but this isn't your concern-- you took quite the long fall to get here, but worry not. Here you are safe, beneath the merciful branches of the Great Tree, and the watchful eyes of the Ebon Lady, our Queen. There is no war in Oakshade. [The Setting] Map Coming Soon! [Oakshade] A grand Kingdom, centered around The Great Tree.Ruled by the Ebon Lady, rightful Queen, long may she reign. Primitive, but peaceful. Gatewood The west gate of Oakshade. Marks the kingdom's borders. Springbrook A village between Gatewood and the base of The Great Tree. Built along a river, as per the name. Abandoned. Brimwood A village between the base of The Great Tree and Highview. Abandoned. [Highview] The east gate of Oakshade.Overlooks a chasm with an old bridge across it, to a series of ancient tunnels leading down. LongfallA village at the bottom of the chasm.Ancient tunnels to the east lead up the cliffs to the bridge.Ancient tunnels to the west lead through the Nail Graveyard, to Deeproot. Heartwood The capital city of Oakshade. Build in and around the trunk of The Great Tree. Famed for the Grand Stadium, in which mighty beasts and bugs fight viciously for glory... ...and the favor of the Queen. Canopy An aristocratic district in branches of The Great Tree. Home to The Ebon Lady and her retinue. To trespass is to court death... or worse. [Deeproot] Catacombs carved by the roots of The Great Tree.Runs deep and runs far, connected to many a strange place... ...but the tangle of tunnels is easy to get lost in. The Root Forest Uppermost region of Deeproot. Once harvested for wood, now overgrown and treacherous. Prowled by feral insects. The Knot Thickest point of Deeproot. Some say it is difficult to enter, and impossible to leave. Some say it is an expedient shortcut. Moss Jungle A land of lush greenery, supposedly east of Gatewood. Origin of the river that runs through Springbrook. Home to a rife variety of bugs, and connected to Deeproot. Redstone Caverns A series of caverns connected to Deeproot. The rock of these caves possesses a strange red coloration Said to be home to a tribe of ruthless killers who slaughter with indiscriminate glee. The Nail Graveyard The site of a great battle, littered with the abandoned blades of countless warriors. Said to be haunted, and possess a single living inhabitant. Separates Deeproot and Longfall. Rockbottom A village nestled in the very bottom of Deeproot. Said to be quite nice, but few have been there. The Oasis A rumor, and a dangerous one, nestled deeper than even the roots of The Great Tree. Said to be a place of such beauty and luxury that it rivals the estates of Canopy. None can honestly claim to have seen it, but some dare say it was the birthplace of the Ebon Lady herself. Map Coming Soon! [Oakshade] A grand Kingdom, centered around The Great Tree. None can honestly claim to have seen it, but some dare say it was the birthplace of the Ebon Lady herself.[Application] Name [What do they call you?] Bug names vary. They can be short, one or two syllable things like Tuk or Jiji. They can be longer, more like people names, such as Cornifer or Iselda. And some are more like monikers, such as Sly or Hornet. Appearance [What do you look like?] Bugs come in many shapes and sizes. Most intelligent bugs are bipedal, but not all. From the flimsiest fly to a proud beetle, to the undefineable inbetweens. I recommend looking up some of Hollow Knight's art for reference. Personality [What lives at your core?] Self-explanatory, but don't get too complicated now. No need for a life story, now. Weapon [What do you wield?] The analogue to a sword here is called a Nail. Variants like Longnails, Greatnails, and Nail-lances exist. Weapons may also be made of scavenged creatures' claws or shields made of shell. And of course, other weapons might occur. Extras [What's that you've got there?] List three things your character can do. This could include: Spells, a forgotten art fueled by the soul, but strengthened by other sources. Charms, little trinkets forged of wishes. Often powerful things. Natural (or not) abilities that help you to navigate and survive. Flight, climbing, acid resistance, etc. [The Premise] Oakshade is not the place it claims to be. It bears the marks of a civilization that was once glorious and advanced, but has since slid back into a more primitive state-- and yet, the people of Oakshade can recall no such time before the Ebon Lady, who they claim is their rightful ruler. Yet much of the kingdom's state contradicts these facts. Questions abound, and the answers surely lie in wait-- if one has curiosity, cunning... and courage. Uhey may yet be found in its tangled depths and wild places... and what few minds are not addled by unknown forces might be willing to lend a hand. Watch your step and seek your answers swiftly, explorer. For the Ebon Lady sees all from her perch, and her children watch for those who might seek the truth, and stifle it wherever it may arise. After all, the truth is like fire. It has a nasty tendency to spread. Would you cleave to the Ebon Lady, or seek the Crimson King? Are you on the side of truth, or power? Freedom or security? Shade... or flame? [Application] Name [What do they call you?] Bug names vary. They can be short, one or two syllable things like Tuk or Jiji.
