Games you own and neglected

Recommended Posts

You ever have one of those games that you play for a long time and then for whatever you just stop? Maybe you got bored. Maybe you got stuck somewhere in the game and gave up. Or maybe you got a new game, and played that but completely forgot this one. Whatever the reason, what game did you play for quite while before suddenly stopping?

I got really far in Final Fantasy 8 but the disk I was using had an issue and there was a part it'd freeze on. Fixed it by borrowing my friend's disk to get past that part but soon after just stopped playing entirely.

Tales from the Borderlands... I picked it up because I LOVE the Borderlands series, but because it's such a drastic change from Borderlands 1, 2 and the Pre-Sequel I pretty much just shelved it and haven't picked it up since

Baten Kaitos. Got stuck with a boss. The first time I couldn't beat it I stopped playing like for a month, and when I went back to rematch it I failed again, and at one point I stopped trying.
Baten Kaitos Origins: IIRC I just lost interest on this one. I was doing well and everything.
Fragile Dreams: Same as above. Was doing well, reached chapter/arc 2.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. A miniboss I couldn't beat. Also I was discouraged already from finishing the game because I missed a log entry you can get from a 1-time-only miniboss.
Catherine: Got busy with life and stuff, but damn I love this game, and want to continue from where I left eventually.

Damn, now I would like to finish Baten Kaitos, Fragile and Prime 2, or restart them if my files are no longer available. Baten Kaitos Origins not so much until I'm done with the first.

I can think of two that took me years of dropping and buying again to finish:

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc - The first time I dropped it was during the Desert of the Knaaren area. Those fucks were meant to be unhittable and basically mean death if you're cornered. The music and the overall ambience of the place was so offputting and frustrating that I just stopped. A couple years later I picked it back up again and got as far as the first stage of the final boss. It took me a while to learn the pattern of its attacks, but when I went in not knowing how it worked, I could not, for the life of me, figure out why they there leading in on my movements so perfectly and I could not get around it. Hence my second drop. Took me until a couple years ago to get the PS3 remastered version and play through it completely. I'd say that stretch of time was part of why that's currently my favorite game of all time, cause despite how frustrating it was at first, playing through it again and getting past it was such a great feeling and each time I would see it with a new perspective and appreciation.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - I went into this game blindly with no experience with the Witcher series, be it the books or the previous games. All I knew was that it was a really big thing and it looked interesting, so I got it. First impressions of the combat: clunky and finnicky. I struggled with it a lot and couldn't really get the hang of it up to the point where I stopped playing and sold it when I kept dying to a werewolf that was lower level than me. A year later I start wanting to play it again cause something was telling me it was worth another shot, so I did. I bought it again and, whaddya know, I found out that I wasn't leveling up properly. So that made things much easier and I learned to better control things. However, then came the Isles of Mist. Ofc that segment was the point of no return and all of my optional quests were wiped, a dumb narcoleptic dwarf escort mission, and enemies that killed me no matter what I tried. Frustration ensued, dropped it and sold it again. It wasn't until I bought it a third time on Steam where I beat the game and spent the most amount of time on a game that I've ever spent, including a NG+ playthrough just to try and do more things in the world.

Not really sure about others, but I know for sure there are many. I have a really bad habit of starting things and not finishing them, so it's bound to happen one way or another.

I have plenty of games that I don't play. Despite purchasing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Spiro Reignited Trilogy, I have not even so much as removed the plastic wrap off either game. I played Remilore, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days briefly and haven't touched them since. But I intend to do so in the Summer. Some I stopped playing because I couldn't progress (looking at you Yugioh Forbidden Memories) or had already beat (Resident Evil 2 for example). But one that I just flatout neglected despite playing it a lot was Fallout: New Vegas. I played that game ever since I got my PlayStation 3 (which was when the PS4 was already out). I liked the atmosphere (despite disliking wastelands and areas similar to them. But after a while I just stopped. Probably because I messed up in the story. Missed my chance to recruit a girl, missed my chance to kill Benny, took an offensive route in the Silver Run, and ruined any relations with the Legion. So instead of loading an old save or starting anew, I guess I just found it easier to quit. Will I ever return to it? Maybe, because I want some closure to that game.
