Dust in the Wind

Spoiler

SE20eQ2.jpg

"I kinda wanna draw something sci-fi... don't move. I'm drawing you as a cyborg."

Name: Momoka Aki
Age: 18
Gender: Female

Weapons: Whip, Caltrops

Appearance:

Spoiler

D9EEZ2Z.jpg

Height: 5'2"
Weight: 113 pounds

Personality:

Spoiler

Momoka isn't a perfect person, and she's aware of that. She's seen some messed-up things, done some herself, and isn't "the average girl" she'd be perfectly content to be. However, she's come to accept that, and instead of being "perfect" or even "normal" she's content to simply be "her best". To her, that means keeping her life steady and on the rails, and pursuing her dreams as a manga artist. To that end, Momoka is a young lady with a deep passion for manga, often reading some with her downtime if she isn't perfecting her own art. She's pretty keen on fiction in general, but manga in particular clicks with her, being both a girl who has a much better time processing information when she can see it and one who enjoys drawing.

Although not really one for the great outdoors, Momoka is a rather extroverted and social sort. She can come off as a bit stiff at first as she tries to get a feel for people, but it won't take long for her to loosen up a bit and enjoy the company of others. She also is a firm believer in treating others how she'd want to be treated. That means respecting opinions, encouraging people to stay on the straight and narrow, and being perhaps a bit too forgiving. Momoka generally tries not to linger on the past much, and as a result, will often pardon others when they wrong her, though she won't forget, especially if they frighten her in some way. Fear can shut Momoka down in mere moments, so she tries to avoid anything that can prompt it in her, and takes people deliberately scaring her very seriously.

Biography:

Spoiler

Momoka's life, for the most part, was painfully simple. She was raised primarily by her father, with her mother working long and hard at the office, having both an older and a younger brother as well as her parents. Although she was never a particularly amazing student in academic subjects, she had a real knack for art. It seemed as if Momoka was livinng the perfect schoolgirl life, what with the happy family, good living conditions, and awareness of what she wanted to do in life. It wasn't even unheard of for the family to go vacationing overseas.

One such vacation was what led to the birth of Momoka's shadow. On a flight to America, the plane had been caught up in a sudden and severe turbulence. Ultimately, the plane crashed, killing everyone on the flight except for three passengers and a flight attendant. In addition to the survivor's guilt from being the only one in her family lucky enough to survive the crash and multiple phobias that were birthed on the flight, Momoka was afraid and alone, having to stay in a country she barely understood the language of until a return trip to Japan could be arranged. The perfect target for a Shadow. Upon returning, Momoka was sent to live with her mother's parents. For the next couple months, she tried to drown out her fear with a hard-partying lifestyle under her Shadow's influence, throwing herself face-first into reckless indulgence as a coping mechanism, and finding herself in gradually worse company as a result. In a moment of clarity though, after realizing these parties were destroying her life, Momoka realized this wasn't the right way to fix herself.

She started seeing therapists. She started taking medicine. She did research online about ways to cure her phobias. Instead of panicking over the negatives or blotting it out with big parties in bad company, Momoka started using her art hobbies to help distract herself from frightening situations. It was a struggle at first, but after a few years fighting off those urges to let loose and drown herself in parties, she was able to finally stop taking therapy and medicine. While the damage couldn't be completely cured, Momoka had gotten herself back on the straight and narrow and overcome the bulk of her survivor's guilt, even if getting her phobias under control was proving to be a much greater challenge than fixing her lifestyle.

More importantly, taking back control of her life and self had awakened something inside Momoka. Specifically, a Persona.

Misc. Info:

Spoiler

The flight that took her family left Momoka with acrophobia, aerophobia, and ancraphobia, respectively the fears of heights, airplanes, and wind. Of the three, her acrophobia is the most under control, but even this can still be problematic.

Due to the period where Momoka was harboring a Shadow, her idea of what counts as a party is a bit exaggerated.

WIP

Spoiler

Applicant Name: ChampionZero

Character Name: Nokori Shizukana

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Appearance

Spoiler

Shizukana stands 182cm (just under 6 feet tall) and weighs a little over 90 kilograms (roughly 200 pounds). He is remarkably fit and strong
His hair and eyes are black, but the former has been graying as of late.
He dresses as a teacher, wearing slacks, nice shoes, and an open dress shirt. If it's cold, he'll wear a long-sleeved shirt and an old leather jacket that looks like it belongs on a gang member. He wears circular sunglasses that conceal his eyes, which are usually ringed with the results of long nights working.
He has strong facial features that suggest some European heritage, but is undeniably Japanese.

Personality

Spoiler

Shizukana is a very kind and soft-spoken man, who keeps few secrets and smiles often. With students he is helpful, understanding, and lenient, but keeps a firm hand over his class with regards to order and doing things properly. He's generally seen as the cool teacher. With other teachers he is a friendly, sociable fellow despite being relatively quiet. He retains a few bad habits from his delinquent days as well. He rolls his r's, drives a motorcycle, wears a jacket over his shoulders and a sarashi under his shirt.

Privately, Shizukana is up late into the night, be it working, browsing the internet, or watching anime, anything to minimize the amount of time he spends sleeping, and by extension dreaming. He is the product of tragedy, and the mistakes he'd made haunt him relentlessly. As a result he's become something of an otaku by accident, and is also able to keep up with kids and pop culture.

Faced with opponents, Shizukana shows his true colors, primarily red. He is an excellent fighter thanks to years of exercise and his days of delinquency. He has no qualms about fighting dirty, nor any desire to show mercy, but he will let you think otherwise. He will draw out a fight to toy with his opponents. And he will smile in your face when he finally pulls the trigger.

Biography

Spoiler

Once upon a time, Shizukana was the name of a gang leader. A ruthless delinquent with a pack of followers, like any other. A lot of violence, and even a few deaths surrounded him and his gang. He was well known, and unless you were very brave or very stupid, you kept your head down and didn't cause trouble. See his gang fancied themselves as peacekeepers, and protectors of the people. Vigilante gangsters is a funny concept on paper, but in practice, it was much less laughable.

After high-school, Shizukana discovered he had a daughter, only three years old. The little girl's mother had died of a heart condition shortly after she was born, and she'd been sent off to the foster system. Shizukana demanded custody of his child, and got it without a fuss. Wanting to provide for her, he left his gang life behind and studied to become a teacher, so he could make an honest living. At age twenty-five, he received a Master's Degree... and lost his daughter.

Following her death, due to to the same genetic defect that she and her mother had received from Shizukana, he relapsed into his old ways, hard. He smoked, drank, fought, all in the secret hopes that he would die along the way and be with his daughter again.

But he didn't.

Fast forward four more years, and he's changed for the better again. He got a job as a teacher, cleaned himself up, and cut ties with his gang cleanly. He thought it was over... and then, his Persona manifested, and everything he'd worked for was turned upside-down.

Weapons: Shizukana fights with a weapon from his old gang days, a chokutō, and wears hand wraps for good measure. He does not use guns.

Behind the Smile

Spoiler

Name: Sunako Izayoi

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Appearance:

Spoiler

Height: 5'5"/167 cm
Weight: 120 lbs/54 kg

IXbzpkN.jpg

Personality:

Spoiler

Sunako is generally cheerful and approachable, if reserved. She doesn't often initiate but is usually welcome to approaches from others. She keeps up a calm demeanor, like she's thinking very carefully about most of what she does. It's easy for her to get drowned out in a conversation if time isn't given for her to collect her thoughts. She's a very good listener as part of this, and her advice tends to be fairly insightful due to her slower approach to conversations.

The young woman is very pensive on her own time. She thinks a lot about herself and the side of herself she presents to others. The happy self that others see isn't fake, but she wonders why she chooses to be that way with others. Her thoughts are not generally as bright or happy as she makes herself out to be. Conversation on deep, complicated topics is her favorite thing but she rarely seeks out opportunities to do so. There's a barrier between the Sunanko others see and the Sunako she knows herself to be.

Sunako's emotional responses are usually very tame compared to others. Her anger doesn't spark easily, frustration takes a long time to build, and when she likes something she isn't prone to outbursts of excitement. This causes a bit of a disconnect with others as she simply can't understand passionate displays. A soft smile and a thank you don't always carry how much she appreciates a kindness done to her. Likewise others will tend to think she doesn't care when she doesn't get angry about things they perceive as unfair. She does feel things, she just keeps them to herself and ponders them long and hard. While never as intense, her emotions tend to stay with her much longer than others.

Biography:

Spoiler

Sunako comes from a particularly large family. Not that she has a lot of siblings herself but her parents both had several, creating a tangled mess of an extended family who all lived relatively nearby each other. The girl's life was filled with interactions with aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. She was always something of a deep thinker and among her early school friends and even her family was perceived as a bit of an oddball.

While the young girl loved her family very deeply, these feelings, as with most of her emotions, were always difficult to express. This was mainly because she wasn't sure she had the right words and until she did she preferred not to comment. Normally, this might not have been an issue. But with the sheer number of relatives, it was only inevitable that tragedy would strike the family. A car accident claimed the life of one of her uncles on her father's side.

At the funeral, Sunako found herself unable to express her grief, the idea of it still turning in her mind. Because she had shed no tears, many of her family accused her of not caring for her family, a truly dishonorable thing. And while this wasn't true, she couldn't figure out how she was feeling exactly. But she was grieving, in her own way. And this emotion lingered with her for years after, presenting something of an empty feeling.

This repeated itself several more times as a grandparent on both sides of the family passed and again Sunako barely cried or openly grieved. At any family function she could hear others talking about her behind her back. Some even directly confronted her; a cousin even accusing her saying she wouldn't care if her own parents or brother died. She knew this to not be true and denied it whenever the idea came up.

But still, the weight of her family's expectations wore on her. Wasn't it better that she could accept the deaths and keep going about her days? Of course she missed the departed but there was nothing she could do to bring them back. Was she acting inappropriately? She couldn't very well make herself cry more even if she tried. What did they want from her? The guilt piled up as she attempted to process her own grief and sadness. She made herself feel worse for not feeling as bad as the rest of her family. She began losing weight from the mounting mental stress yet always seemed fine when asked.

Sunako carried on for a time like this. Her mind constantly awash in the sea of thoughts about how she was supposed to respond to different events. One of her cousins was getting married soon. How happy was she supposed to be for them? Would people be angry if she wasn't energetic enough? They'd just bring up the funerals again wouldn't they? And yet she continued to greet her friends at school with the same usual smile and happy stories of things she did over the weekend or TV shows they all watched.

The thoughts inside her head began to take on a stronger presence. They shifted from questioning herself to accusing herself. "You're an unfeeling monster" she would tell herself and then have to try and deny it endlessly as her own voice echoed in her head. It only intensified as her mother was diagnosed with cancer in recent months. She seemed backed into a corner in her own mind. Every thought accused of her being cold and loveless. "You wouldn't care if she died," it taunted her endlessly.

One night as her mother's health worsened leading to her hospitalization, Sunako was consumed by the darkness. She couldn't see or feel her room around her. There was nothing but pitch black darkness except in one spot. Directly in front of her stood what looked to be herself. The figure stood with yellow glowing eyes and a stare that said everything she'd been hearing in her head for months and years. It spoke with her own voice, though distorted by the painful emotions it bore with it.

"You'll be happy when she dies." it said. And all at once something snapped in the girl's mind.

"No…" she started in response to the figure. That was a lie. That wasn't her own thought. If it had just said she wouldn't be sad enough she could have believed it. Had it said her family would mock and tease her she might have believed it. But she knew for a fact she would never be happy to see a family member pass. "You're not me!" she screamed at the figure. And with the proclamation a light pierced the darkness. The figure writhed in agony at the light as it twisted from Sunako's form into that of an elegant woman with long brown hair in a dark black and purple dress.

"I am thou." a voice distinctly different and yet similar to her own pierced Sunako's mind without the figure's mouth moving. "Thou art I," it continued. "Thou hast seen through the illusions presented to you. The path to thy true self lies stretched out ahead. Walk it with me, that none dare deceive us again." it concluded as it reached out a hand to the young girl. Sunako reciprocated and the light took over.

When Sunako came to, she was on the floor of her bedroom in a cold sweat. The scene that had played out before her was fresh in her mind. So vivid in fact that she wondered if it had been real or not. But what was real was her head felt clear for the first time in years. She understood feelings that had been buried in her for some time just a bit better. And even though she didn't have everything worked out, and her mother's future was uncertain, she knew she could move forward.
