Power System

Spoiler

In this world, belief is power. Put simply, the more people who put trust in someone, the more powerful they will be. That trust carries its own distinct flavor, as the specific abilities of a hero are determined by their perception in the public eye. A star body builder may be able to lift several tonnes, or deflect bullets with their gleaming muscles. A famous fortune teller may be able to truly divine the future. What matters is what people believe, and how many believe it, regardless of what would otherwise be true.

Trust isn't always a positive factor. A hero known for sleeplessly protecting the city may find themselves unable to sleep at all, a hero famous for public appearances may be forced to pose whenever a camera is pointed at them.

On the other side of the spectrum is fear. The concerns and worries of people manifest as a chaotic force that corrupts humans, instilling them with great power while making them behave erratically and violently. While a person can be corrupted by their own fear, the energy produced precipitates as a dark sludge that can infect and corrupt anyone who it comes into contact with, compromising even the most heroic.

Fear Amplification Devices also exist, allowing an individual to boost their own strength by harnessing others’ fear of them. These devices have populated the black market in recent years, and are the method by which most villains attain power.

Hierarchical Systems

Spoiler

Hero Affairs Commission

Spoiler

Created to regulate the proliferation of trust, and to combat the spread of fear, the Commission is the primary governing force over heroics, providing a framework and rules that turn vigilantism into a career. The Commission works hand in hand with the various hero agencies, making sure that each of them operates within the agreed upon confines to keep the powers of trust predictable and safe for the public.

Rankings Tournament

Spoiler

Every two years since the Hero Affairs Commission was founded, there is a tournament that includes the current top 10 heroes, to determine the order of their rankings. The #1 hero, determined to be the strongest and most popular through the bracket, is crowned X, a title that solidifies them in the public perception as the symbol of precisely what it means to be a hero, and to hold the public's trust.

Hero Agencies

Spoiler

In a world where anyone can become a hero, a handful of companies exist to sort through the chaff and elevate those most suitable to hold the public's trust. Each agency handles their talent a little differently, but they all serve the purpose of trying to push their public-facing paragons into the public eye, so that they may rise the ranks.

-Axis Corporation-

Spoiler

The longest-standing agency still in the public eye, Axis is the result of various ad agencies and marketing conglomerates being bought out, redirecting their resources to the goal of Heroes as Products. While all agencies focus heavily upon promotion, merchandise, and marketing of their heroes, Axis exists for that as their sole purpose. Advertisement, media tie-ins, and custom product lines are Axis’s bread and butter. Many view its methods as artificial and overly commercialized, resulting in a gradual decrease in popularity.

-Modern Heroic Guild (MHG)-

Spoiler

Started as a response to the perceived over-corporatization of heroics, MHG stands proudly with its governing principle of “Safety, through Trust”. While it naturally includes a sizable backend of clerical staffing, The Guild works to advocate for its members by centering them in leadership: the president of MHG is the member with the highest trust, with a board of directors consisting of the 10 members that follow most closely. These positions are shuffled following each ranking tournament. The current X, Maestro, is the current acting president of MHG.

-HypePro Live-

Spoiler

An online live streaming service that is used by many to build trust, showing off their talents to the largest audience possible. As creators build up enough trust to be able to engage in heroics, specialized media teams work with them to help increase engagement, retention, and refinement of trust to best sharpen them into contenders for the biennial rankings tournament. While all of the agencies work to promote their heroes, HPL is unique in its ability to produce new heroes from thin air.

-Catalyst Foundry-

Spoiler

A newcomer to the hero scene, Catalyst Foundry operates under the belief that heroes can be built, not just discovered. With heavy investment and little regard for tradition, Catalyst pushes its candidates through carefully staged appearances, rehearsed rescues, and tightly controlled media arcs. Supporters call it efficient and innovative, while detractors accuse it of being reckless and manipulative. In only a few short years, Catalyst has managed to force its way into the conversation as a serious competitor, with its eyes set firmly on the next rankings tournament.

Plot

Spoiler

32 years after the founding of the Hero Affairs Commission, the 16th biennial Rankings tournament is about to commence. The top 10 heroes are all lined up, and fans from all the different districts have arrived to cheer for their favorites and help them become Hero X. However, only the evening before the tournament is to begin, the heroes and fans alike are met with a shocking announcement: the current X, the previously assumed invincible Maestro, was found dead. Despite the chaos, the Hero Affairs Commission has elected to continue the tournament anyway so that the rankings can be solidified and trust can glue things back together. Despite the resumption of affairs, tensions are high, and everyone is a suspect.

What I Expect of You

Spoiler

This RP is going to be fairly unconventional. While this is a battle tournament RP on its face, the true focus is the murder mystery in the background, and the building relationships between these heroes. Due to the nature of the mystery, and the fact that all of the player characters are suspects in it, a few considerations will be taken both in and out of character. Character apps won't be posted publicly, and instead will be hashed out in a private channel on the discord server I have put together for this RP. After a character has been approved, a public profile can be posted to show the other participants the public-facing image and information that the hero’s agency releases for promotional purposes. Some heroes will likely already know more about each other, and that can be discussed privately. While making posts in character, I request that you refrain from including internal narration. While a character may be thinking to themselves that they are at risk of being caught for murder, that will not be known to other players. Nobody is omniscient!
