IC Thread

The Stellar Drive. The first engine that allows human spaceships to travel beyond the humble boundaries of a few planets orbiting the sun without needing fuel, and as such, the next great step forward in mankind's endless pursuit to improve, endure, and expand. The first ship sent out on such an ambitious mission - aptly named Stella - was completely destroyed in an accident that caused the ship's Stellar Drive to overheat and explode, killing everyone on-board. But humans, being incredibly difficult to deter, built a second one anyway. The recruitment process for a crew wasn't easy in the wake of the first ship's destruction, but after a couple years of looking around, a new ship called the Rebounder was fitted with a crew, better armor, more guns, and enough wares for sale to buy a nation with.

Among the crew aboard the Rebounder are plenty of invaluable personnel. That's where you come in. Be it for fame, fortune, adventure, or just sheer boredom, you've signed on to join the crew of the Rebounder on its voyage beyond the home system of humanity, but what awaits your ship and crew once you spread your wings to explore the stars is anyone's guess. Be you diplomats, colonists, merchants, or warmongers, one thing remains clear. Mankind's second crew to take to the stars beyond will leave a lasting impact, either in their neighborhood, or across the entire galaxy.

Rules

Spoiler
  1. All NCM forum rules and RP section rules apply.
  2. I am the host. I want to leave this RP pretty open-ended and up to player choice on where it goes mind you, but ultimately, I'm the one with final say.
  3. IC conflict is perfectly fine and can make things pretty spicy since we're all on the same ship, but OOC conflict should either be avoided or kept between the players in question. If something's come up between two or more players that can't be resolved on their own, I'll mediate or intervene as necessary.
  4. At least for the start of the RP, I'll only be accepting a single app per player. Having multiple is fine, but please do so knowing that only one will be accepted unless this rule changes in the future.
  5. This is an RP meant for the sake of fun, so do your best to have some! If you aren't enjoying the RP, please let me know and we can try to fix the issue together.

"Plot" & Setting

Spoiler

Star Mech Stellar is an RP I made because Zai is a coward about exploring the galaxy beyond mankind's doorstep and leaving whatever sort of impact on the galaxy that the cast sees fit. Think of the space stage of Spore if you're familiar with it, but without being as repetitive, grindy, or lonely. The galaxy is your sandbox, and while there will certainly be something of a plot to it, I can't say what that is simply because player actions may completely change how it works. Perhaps you'll be conquerers, or saviors, or just a band of mercenaries or humble merchants. Whatever happens, your job as a crew member of the Rebounder is to explore, mingle within the interstellar community, and learn what you can about the worlds beyond your home.

This is an RP that I'd like to give some serious moments, some silly moments, and all manner of other moments too. But the important thing is that the general direction things move in will be determined by the players, and I'm just here to tie it all together in a cohesive manner. There will be mech combat. There will be character moments. There will be plenty of people to meet and weird jobs to take up along the way. I've included information on the solar system's planets as of the start of this RP below, but since the most involvement we'll likely have with our own solar system is getting the occasional transmission from the capital, these are more for flavor and if you really want to look at where your character could have been from.

Planets

Spoiler

It's been an awfully long time since the 21st Century, and while Earth can no longer support life on paper, the other planets in the solar system have made up for its sacrifice with brilliant innovations in terraforming, colonization, and even gravity alteration.

MERCURY
A desert planet of incredibly hot days and equally cold nights, Mercury's position so close to the sun makes it an incredibly effective factory for harvesting solar power, effectively making it something of a "mining town" planet. With solar power becoming the norm for mankind not long after the exodus from Earth, Mercury is also among the planets humans have lived on the longest since then. Mercury is also at the forefront of humanity's terraforming efforts.

VENUS
Despite all of mankind's efforts, Venus is too far gone to be habitable in the foreseeable future. The runaway greenhouse effect that's persisted on the planet for longer than anyone knows as rendered the temperature on the planet way too hot to even start working on, and the atmospheric pressure would still have to be fixed afterward. Rather than trying to fix and colonize Venus, most people direct their effort to improving life on the rest of the planets.

EARTH/LUNA
In the late 21st Century, Earth officially became an uninhabitable planet due to centuries of mismanaged resources, careless pollution, and accelerating climate change. While this is true on paper, humans are incredibly tenacious creatures, and some choose to remain on the home planet of their species despite its extreme and wildly unpredictable conditions. The concepts of seasons and long-term climates no longer exist on Earth, and reliable weather forecasts are little more than wishful thinking. While Earth is still the political heart of humanity, the entirety of its political power is on the planet's moon instead, upon which is a capital city appropriately named Luna that spans its entirety.

MARS
If Earth and its moon are the capital of mankind, Mars is the suburbs. The first planet to be colonized from space, which contains a sizable chunk of the human population, not much can be said about the planet of note. Even its historical characteristic of being especially red has since faded, as green grass and blue water fills its surface. Aside from its great normalcy, the only distinguishing trait of Mars is that it's a bit chilly.

JUPITER
Fitting enough, the largest planet in the solar system has the most people living on or around it. Aside from many floating cities in the skies of this gas giant, most of Jupiter's moons have at least some people living on it. The functions and populations of these cities can vary wildly, making Jupiter something of a "jack of all trades" planet. Of particular note is the sheer amounts of hydrogen that make up the planet being used for various purposes, making the economy on Jupiter quite the lucrative one for daring entrepreneur.

SATURN
Much like its fellow gas giant, Saturn's hydrogen-based composition makes selling the gasses for profit quite the business to get into. However, this business is far more regulated on Saturn due to its smaller size than Jupiter, and the real draw to the planet is in the space station cities around the planet. Saturn is a popular tourist destination due to its rings.

URANUS
Although not the furthest from the sun, Uranus is the coldest planet in the solar system. Despite immense amounts of effort put into improving the conditions on this planet, it still remains extremely cold, but even here, mankind persists. Although Uranus can't contribute much to the solar system's economy, this fact combined with the dangerously low temperatures makes it an especially cheap place to live.

NEPTUNE
Neptune, by nearly all accounts, is simply not a nice place to live. The efforts put into heating up the windy ice giant went rather smoothly, but had the foreseeable consequence of turning the planet's ice into water, which rose into the atmosphere and became bombardments of rain. Between the extreme winds and chronic torrents, people moving to Neptune typically only did so as a last resort, such as criminals on the run or refugees with nowhere else to go. This in turn caused Neptune to become something of a lawless wasteland, eventually becoming so problematic that the planet was no longer allowed a seat in conferences where the leaders of other planets met up. As a result of all this, coming from Neptune has a bit of a stigma attached to it.

PLUTO
One of two planets to not be terraformed or have its atmosphere adjusted, alongside Venus. Unlike Venus, however, efforts are underway to improve conditions on Pluto to such an extent that it can be lived on peacefully like many other planets, but it's believed many of the workers behind it won't live long enough to see the day it's finished due to the scope of the project. In the meantime however, a single colony exists on Pluto, which is also the solar system's greatest hub of science. It was on this planet that the Stellar Drive was built, and it's from here that mankind continues to observe the area around and beyond their sphere of control, still waiting for that day when they meet their first friends from beyond.

Rebounder

Spoiler

JJ4W1dH.jpg

After the destruction of the Stella, mankind's first reaction was to build a better ship. One equipped with better weapons and armor, more cargo & crew space due to more efficient spaceship construction techniques, and two Stellar Drives so that the entire workload doesn't have to be thrown onto just one. The Rebounder is mankind's second attempt at a first step into the great unknown. With a crew of 300 people, hangar space for 80 mecha, and a large greenhouse-like park area for those who just want to see some greenery again, among other things, the Rebounder is an odd mixture of a battleship, a cargo ship, and a cruise ship. While the ship comes equipped with a translator for all human languages, the technology needed to translate the unknown languages likely spoken by other sapient races is simply out of humanity's reach.

App Format

Spoiler

Add to or modify this app format as you wish, but you must have at least the below, unless stated otherwise. I'll also take this moment to note that if you want to play as a robot, that's totally fine in this day and age. You may be subject to additional scrutiny for this though, since I don't want a cast overflowing with robots.

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Job: What you do aboard the Rebounder. Mech pilot, cook, etc.

Appearance: Spoiler this. An image and a height are your minimum, or at least one beefy  paragraph of written description if you don't want to ues an image.

Personality: Spoiler this. Two paragraphs minimum.

Biography: Spoiler this. Only one paragraph minimum, since this RP is less about where you're from and more about where you're going. Don't make me regret this leniency.

Mech Information: Spoiler this if you have a mech at all. What it looks like, what it does, etc, tell us everything you want us to know about your mech. If you don't have a mech, you can skip this entirely.

Misc. Info: Optional. Any trivial tidbits about your character that don't belong in the other fields.

This is giving me some Civilization: Beyond Earth vibes. Have you already done some worldbuilding on how the Earth looks like when this second ship is launched? What's the plot going to be like? Lots of alien shit or mainly interpersonal?

Yes actually. Before launching this interest check, I took care to do worldbuilding on the state of every planet in the solar system, including Pluto, because it's a goddamn planet and I don't care what scientists say. This info was going to be added when I switched the thread to an OOC (possibly today), but since you've asked, here's the deets on Earth (and its moon) in particular. Ahem.

While Earth is still the political heart of humanity, the entirety of its political power is on the planet's moon instead, upon which is a capital city appropriately named Luna that spans its entirety.

I should note on that same line of thought that every planet in the system has at least some people living on it except for Venus (too hot), with the population and quality of life varying between planets. This is little more than flavor stuff though since the RP is less about where you're from and more about where you're going.

I want the plot meanwhile to be a healthy mix of interpersonal stuff amongst the crew of the Rebounder and meeting/working with/fighting lots of different aliens. Maybe we'll find space cthulhu and punch it in the face, or maybe we'll do some other crazy shit, or maybe we won't, who knows?

Finally, an announcement. Three players besides myself isn't much, but it's a start. As such, I'll get started on the conversion to an OOC later today. In the meantime, I've set up a discord server and will be contacting each of you shortly with a link to it for ease of further discussion.

This is your captain speaking...

Spoiler

08vzN9z.png

"This is mankind's greatest expedition, so we're not going home until the galaxy knows the name 'human'!"

Name: Serena Zann

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Job: Captain

Appearance:

Spoiler

9RfCBi0.png

Height: 5'1"

Personality:

Spoiler

Serena is a straight-laced, dauntless young lady, whose run as both a mech pilot and a captain are marked by equal parts compassion and relentlessness. She cares deeply for anyone or anything under her command, and it's not rare for her to put the needs of her crew above her own. She listens to their input, considers options around it, but knows that sometimes she needs to put her foot down and remind others that she's the one in command. She takes her position pretty seriously, and in that same train of thought, she doesn't like idly wasting her time. Even if it's something as trivial as cleaning the ship's windows, Serena feels compelled to always be doing something. Likewise, she isn't too pleased when others shirk their duties. In her own terms, she doesn't like to run a tight ship so much as an effective one. That means crew morale, adherence to duty, and keeping order, are all equally important to her.

Beyond her duties as a captain however, Serena in general is a girl who wants to relax and have a peaceful, quiet day. She's still every bit as unyielding as usual, but would prefer to spend what little time she has off the clock kicking back after putting everything she's got into her work as captain. Sitting down, having a hot meal, and playing a casual game that she can enjoy without stressing over it too much or reading a relaxing book, is Serena's ideal time off. Of course, she was a mech pilot before she was a captain, and it shows. It's rare that she backs down from a sparring match with another pilot if she's got a moment, and should she step onto the frontlines herself, Serena is every bit as dauntless and unyielding in the cockpit as she is in the seat of power. Serena also fights dirty in mech combat, not hesitating to use an underhanded trick if she sees one, and unafraid to disable a mech by killing its pilot outright.

In regards to her position as captain of the Rebounder in particular, Serena is rightfully anxious, though she doesn't show it. Aside from the possibility that the ship could meet the same grim fate as the Stella, there's simply no telling or planning around what her ship and crew might encounter, and she doesn't like that. However, just as a crew relies on its captain, Serena isn't afraid to admit that a captain must also rely on their crew a bit. But not too much, lest she worry about coming off as too soft.

Biography:

Spoiler

Serena's is an odd success story that sees her rise from an illegal mech fighter to one of the most prominent captains of her generation. Coming from the lawless and stormy planet of Neptune, Serena's was a climate and social environment where one has to be tough as nails to get by. And having always been a pretty small girl for her age, Serena was often seen as easy pickings, making it all the more necessary for someone like her. Which is why she got into underground mech fights. If people knew you knew how to fight back, they're less likely to cause trouble for you, and it was that idea that saw Serena brutally cut her way up through the ranks of her area. She was even known to intrude on the illegal mech scene on other planets from time to time. Her rise from "Serena the illegal mech fighter" to "Captain Zann" started during one such trip.

During an underground mech tournament she'd signed up for on Earth, a devastating earthquake struck the arena during her finals match. Rather than take advantage of the opportunity to finish off her opponent and claim the prize money, Serena directed the others who'd been defeated into their mechs and coordinated efforts to evacuate the spectators and minimize the casualties. The tournament was cancelled, and the prize money was split between herself and her opponent. Unfortunately, Serena's mech had been destroyed in the earthquake, and her prize money went mostly to building a new one, and get it properly registered so she could join proper, legal tournaments. Her switch to going legit was in fact mostly out of self-interest, though. On top of there being no risk of getting arrested, fighters in legal tournaments tended to be less vicious than their underground counterparts, especially in the junior league that she was in the age bracket for. The prize money wasn't as impressive, but Serena's experience in fighting in the underground rings meant taking wins from her relatively tame opponents was easy, and she could win tournaments far more consistently.

The experience she gained in underground tournaments and got to properly show off in legit tournaments also ended up getting her a recommendation to the mech pilot class in a prestigious military school. Serena seized the opportunity, intent on carving a bright future for herself. Studying there served to refine her raw brutality in combat into dangerous skill, but where she really stood head and shoulders above her classmates (metaphorically) was in commander positions. Any team brawls that saw Serena as a team captain invariably ended in her victory. When her faculty advisor suggested trying to transfer into the captain class, Serena gave it a shot. As it turned out, this was the field where she truly shined.

After four years of study and training, Serena Zann graduated from the captain class sometime after the untimely destruction of the Stella. Most new captains shyed away from the idea of accepting the position of captain aboard the Rebounder, and the veterans were all too busy with their own affairs at the time. Serena wasn't most new captains, nor was she a busy veteran. After passing an aptitude test to confirm that she really was fit for the task, she was assigned as the captain of the still-under-construction Rebounder. According to security footage aboard the ship, she has not once set foot outside of the Rebounder since its completion three months ago.

Mech Info:

Spoiler

G15kUtb.png

Name: Scrapper MK3

Type: Close-Quarters

Designer: Serena Zann/Charion Robotics

Manufacturer: Charion Robotics

As its name implies, the Scrapper MK3 is the third in its line. The original Scrapper was destroyed on Earth by an earthquake during the finals of an illegal mech tournament. The Scrapper MK2 was built and officially registered afterward, and won Serena many tournaments in the junior league. When given her first official captain job though, Serena wanted to build a new and stronger mech that would better suit her fighting style. The Scrapper MK2 still exists in a perfectly functional state, and would be the mech Serena brings to further tournaments due to the MK3's experimental parts making it a potential hazard to opponent and spectators alike, rendering the mech unsuitable for official tourneys.

When the time came to build the Scrapper MK3, Serena contacted Charion Robotics, a mech production company reputable for trying new things, to collaborate on a custom mech with experimental parts. In this regard, the Scrapper MK3 embodies Serena's vision and combat experience, as well as Charion's brilliance and innovation. For the most part though, the Scrapper MK3 isn't anything special, being an overall well-rounded mech, albeit a bit light. Oddly enough, however, this mech is primarily designed to fight without carrying a weapon, though is still perfectly capable of using whatever's put in its hands.

Its fingers are sharp claws that can rip through other mechs or dig into surfaces. Its feet have small but powerful pistons, allowing for great leaps or potent kicks. Most unique, however, is an experimental piece of technology inside the mech's torso which Serena calls the Pluto Engine. This "engine" is effectively a tiny Stellar Drive installed in the mech, allowing it to perform several functions once activated that it otherwise can't do. Pushing its performance into overdrive, generating shields, and firing lasers are the ways in which the Scrapper MK3 can use its Pluto Engine. However, because something the size of a mech isn't supposed to use power on this level, overuse of the Pluto Engine can cause the mech to overheat, shut down, and in especially dire cases, self-destruct. In the interest of preserving her own life however, Serena made sure to put in extra funds to ensure the cockpit would survive such an explosion.

Misc. Info:

Spoiler

Habitually grips any railing within arm's reach, despite her outstanding balance.

After graduating from the captain class, Serena moved to a space colony above Saturn. In her home is a garage where the Scrapper MK2 awaits further use.

Although she doesn't have the mechanical skill to repair the Pluto Engine herself in the event of its destruction, she was given a copy of the blueprint for her voyage so that the ship mechanics could repair it if it were to be damaged.

Dislikes bitter things. The mugs of coffee she often drinks on the job have enough creamer in them to barely count as coffee anymore.

My friends, the doctor is in.

Spoiler

excel-doctor.jpg

"In my experience, the only thing that keeps anyone away from greatness is their own sloth."

Name: Hugo White, MD

Age: 45

Gender: male

Job: medic

Appearance:

Spoiler

excel-doctor.jpg

height: 6 ft

Personality:

Spoiler

A proper gentleman from an underprivileged background, Hugo remains humble and efficient. He has a very by the books mentality where everything must go according to plan.. While open to the ideas of others, he makes it clear that anyone else's plan is plan B. Surprisingly, he genuinely cares for his patients and will go out of his way to make sure to deliver the best treatment as quick as he can and makes sure his solutions work the first time. Because of this, as he gets older, he finds himself falling more and more in love with Aristotelian virtue theory, that it isn't enough to do good, but good must come from a good intention and whether or not the means to get the result are perfectly acceptable under a virtuous system.

A creature of habit, Hugo has a very predictable routine.

When not on duty, Hugo can be seen by himself, not out of shyness, but simply because he never really wants to talk to anyone. However, he is easily approachable Having came from an underprivileged background, Hugo learned to take pleasure in the simple things, valuing the people in his life over any material belongings. When he sees busybodies, he can't help but wonder how awful their lives must be having to constantly work and never having time to have a social life. Once a friend, Hugo is probably the best friend you've ever had. While not one for buying expensive things, Hugo will often go out of his way to get nice birthday presents for his friends, even if they aren't really close. "It's just a good thing to do." he says.

Biography:

Spoiler

Born on Uranus to a miner and a house maker, Hugo grew up never knowing a life of comfort, much less luxury. The White family barely made enough to make ends meet, and every night Hugo battled frostbite. On his tenth birthday, his parents got him a new pet, a Uranian Snake named Lance. The "snake" was Hugo's best friend.

Despite their poverty Mr. White decided to send his son to the prestigious Icebell Charter School, hoping that the investment would get his son to a greater opportunity on another planet. During his attendance, Hugo fell in love with the sciences, especially biology and chemistry, obtaining the top scores in all of his classes, except the fine arts, in which he had the lowest. However, on one night, Hugo's father passed away due to hypothermia in the mines. Devastated, Hugo felt a surge of powerlessness not being able to help him in any way, which was the straw that made Hugo decide he wanted to become a medic. Upon graduation, Hugo immediately applied at Red Giant University, the best medical school on Jupiter. After a long, impatient wait, Hugo was ecstatic to learn he was accepted, and started the next semester.

When he was able to pay for a transit to Jupiter, Hugo had his breath taken away from the sudden shock of warmth he felt, highlighting a new opportunity to turn his life around. During his attendance, Hugo felt horrible for abandoning his mother on Uranus. To give himself peace of mind, he got a job in addition to his studies as a receptionist at a veterinarian service on Jupiter. Between work and school, Hugo never had an opportunity to be social. The feeling of isolation and loneliness was maddening. To get out of this runt, he ditched work one day to go to a rave. Even though it wasn't his kind of music, it was great to just be around other people. Unfortunately, during his time at RGU, Hugo saw the rich kids, who had their parents paying off their full ride to college. Jealousy hit Hugo hard. He envied those kids. They didn't have to work for what they wanted. Anything they wanted was covered by their parents credit cards. He wished he could have that kind of life.

Hugo eventually graduated and got hired at Golden Valley Medical Center as a surgeon intern. Under extremely close supervision, Hugo demonstrated finesse and skill at his craft that his mentors highly valued. After what seemed like eons, Hugo was finally hired on a full-time surgeon, performing what felt like dozens of operations a day with a remarkably low fatality rate. While working, he found those same rich kids, who constantly came in with problems induced by drugs and alcohol, sometimes needing extensive organ replacement surgery. He realized that he was wrong to ever be envious of these people, who never had to earn a living, giving him little sympathy and motivation to solve their issues.

A year later, Hugo finally made enough money to move his mom to Jupiter with him, where he rented an apartment with her. He heard about the Rebounder. He dreaded the idea of leaving his mom again, but she encouraged him to go with it and apply for the chance to join the medical crew as a surgeon. While competition was fierce to get the once in a lifetime opportunity, Hugo was able to ace his proficiency test, involving live demonstrations on cadavers, earning the once in a lifetime opportunity to take his craft to the furthest reaches of the universe.

Mech Information: no mech

Misc. Info:

Spoiler

While officially a surgeon, Hugo is also a part-time general practitioner, performing regular medical checkups on the Rebounder's crew.

In his quarters, there is a Uranian Snake tank with a small snake in it named Victor.

Eccentric Billionaire Scientists Are All the Rage Nowadays

Spoiler

Name: Georgia Gammell Angell, PhD, MD, Ivy College Professor Emerita

Age: 41

Gender: Female

Job: Science Officer, specializing in xenobiology.

Appearance:

Spoiler

 image0.png

5' 6", thin and athletic build

Personality:

Spoiler

Georgia is a reserved woman, preferring to keep what she says to a minimum with a strict and precise economy of words. Despite her disposition, she still manages to carry an air of quiet dignity and authority. Among those who know and respect her, her few words carry significant weight. Even those completely ignorant of her accomplishments tend to find her piercing gaze intimidating.

Driven with a voracious desire to unlock the secrets of the universe, Georgia is always drawn towards opportunities to discover things that no others know and has a hard time refusing promises of information. While no fool or absent-minded professor, she has been tricked into compromising situations on more than one occasion by such promises, which resulted in scandals that were only stamped out by the use of family money.

Her daily habits are notably strange, especially when it comes to her diet and eating habits. Instead of eating normal food, Georgia is usually only seen drinking a thick green-brown concoction of her own creation, which she claims contains all the nutrition she needs for the day. She also appears to sleep very little, averaging 4 to 5 hours a day, spending the extra hours exercising and practicing a strange meditation practice that she does in custom-made water tanks. She claims that these eccentric practices strengthen her body and mind, inspiring many copycat practices on Luna, but studies have yet to back up her claims.

While not a soldier, Georgia has proven to be a competent pilot in simulations. However, during the maiden flight of the Challenger II, she preferred to rely on the AI auto pilot to do the majority of the flying.

Biography:

Spoiler

Georgia’s early life was filled with ease and relaxed learning. Being born to one of the premier families of Luna, every possible opportunity was afforded to her, which included attendance in the most prestigious educational institute on the Moon, The Ivy College. She showed signs of brilliance early in life, quickly outpacing her peers, achieving her Doctorate in Evolutionary Biology, Magna Cum Laude at the age of 22.

Instead of taking to the socialite lifestyle, Georgia preferred to keep to herself, eschewing long nights of mingling with future politicians and CEOs to add to her growing list of academic achievements, which grew to encompass achievements in medicine, engineering and astrophysics. By the time she was 30, she had become one of the most decorated academics of Luna and by far the youngest of them.

Georgia had a minor role in the construction of the Stella, contributing to the design of the navigational and life support systems. However, she had begun to see the glaring issues with the single engine design of the Stella, which she foresaw would likely not be sufficient to move a ship of this scale without significant strain on its structural stability. She, along with a small team of fellow engineers, presented her concerns and alternate designs to the Head Committee, only to be ignored and rudely dismissed. In disgust, she resigned and began work founding the Angell Institute of the Sciences.

After the catastrophic failure of the Stella, Georgia and the Angell Institute supported the movement for the construction of a second star-faring ship, contributing significant amounts of the funds of the Institute and her family’s wealth to the design and construction of the Rebounder. Her main reason for her support of the Rebounder was to explore and be able to study the signs of life in different star systems that were out of the reach of even the most distant Kuiper telescopes.

Georgia had supported a purely scientific and peaceful mission to the stars, but military interests had slowly began to dominate the construction of the Rebounder, pushing for armaments and military equipment to be added to the ship. Although initially skeptical, Georgia eventually saw the benefits of private contractors and their considerable experience constructing reliable spaceships, allowing military contractors to contribute their manpower to the project. This partnership with the military-industrial complex eventually led to the collaboration between the Angell Institute and Boeing-Lockheed Aerospace Industries, which led to the construction of a small fleet of scientific vessels to support the Rebounder, with the Challenger II as its flagship.

Now serving as its Chief Science Officer, Dr. Angell now stands ready to peel back the mysteries of the distant stars and all that it has to offer humanity.

Mech Information:

Spoiler

hwChFIj.jpg

Name: Challenger II

Type: Scout/Battlefield Support

Designer: Angell Institute of the Sciences / Boeing-Lockheed Aerospace Industries

Manufacturer: Boeing-Lockheed Aerospace Industries

Appearance: Looking more like a cross of a tactical personnel carrier and a research vessel rather than a mecha, the Challenger II is much more than meets the eye. Commissioned and built to the specifications of Georgia herself, it is well equipped to deal with anything a hostile galaxy could throw at it. Taking after its namesake, it sports a sleek white and black color scheme of a space shuttle of old, with its name and the coat of arms of the Angell family emblazoned on its sides. It is often seen bristling with various antennae and receiver dishes from its surveying equipment.

Capabilities: The main strength of the Challenger II is its superior surveillance equipment. Its modular sensor system allows it to easily switch from a variety of sensors for more appropriate ones for the mission at hand. Versatile long-range sensors allow it to scan distant planet geography as well as the location of distant enemy movement, while more specialised sensors can be used for detailed close range work, including lifeform sensors, full spectrum thermal cameras, tectonic infra-sonar and even mecha damage diagnostic modules. Depending on the mission’s needs, the Challenger II can also support semi-autonomous land or air drones for more detailed surveillance in areas too small or too dangerous for it to go.

Capacious yet nimble, the Challenger II is equipped with both efficient space engines for off-planet travel and state-of-the-art hover technology for quick travel on planets and elsewhere. Unlike dedicated combat mechs, the Challenger II can support a crew of up to 15 passengers in its main hull, plus 2 pilots at its helm, making it suitable for both scientific expeditions and surgical troop deployments. This extra personnel capacity can be easily switched out for mission specific equipment, such as a medical bay, a field laboratory, or even specialized weapon systems.

In combat, the Challenger II is unlike other scientific vessels which would simply surrender and wait for rescue. While not meant for front-line combat, it sports impressive defensive capabilities usually found on larger ships, such as energy shielding, EMP resistance, a hardened hull and even a projected point-defense system that can ward off missiles and space debris alike. If the Challenger unaccompanied and must provide its own firepower, it comes equipped with the Apollo Mk. V Prismatic Lance, which can deal lethal damage to armored targets at great distances.

To manage all of these various systems, the Challenger II comes equipped with an onboard AI, which manages the power use of the many modules, provides computational power for interpreting incoming data and combat-ready autopiloting capabilities. However, the Institute chose not to give the AI any kind of personality to ensure absolute compliance, making it quite difficult to interact with if one does not use very precise language.

The Challenger II is not without its shortcomings. All of the sensors and redundant systems draw quite a bit of energy from its experimental microfusion cell, making it susceptible to brownouts if too many of these systems are used at once, especially when the Prismatic Lance is active. Additionally, the Challenger II lacks integrated close-range and medium-range armaments, making it unsuitable for many combat situations, relying on its superior speed and maneuverability to slip out of the fray or specialized weapon modules prepared ahead of time.

During her brief tenure at Ivy College, Georgia was rated one of the worst professors by her students due to her tendency to give rambling lectures in a quiet voice irrelevant to the course at hand.

Interested. Saving a spot.

Question - is mech combat/exploration going to be the main focus of how we explore/interact with new environments? I would imagine that, from the sound of how far technology has progressed, unarmored humans, however skilled, might not cut it... If so, that's perfectly fine, though my only experience with "mechs" comes from stuff like Gundam, a little bit of Code Geass, and Ghost in the Shell. Is that more or less the vibe you had in mind?

It's a bit of a yes but also a bit of a no. There will be times to use mechs and times not to use them, to put it in the shortest way possible. As for the general vibe of things, it's actually mostly inspired by the space stage of Spore; exploring the galaxy, meeting new friends and foes, etc. It might be better to think of it as a more in-depth and personalized version of that than a mecha anime.

In the meantime, I'll be distributing server links to you and zeta briefly. We can talk in greater detail there if you'd like.

Space Oddity

Spoiler

“That's what I do. I pilot mechs and I know things!”

Personal Information

Name: Rei Celeste (Lit. Seresute Rei, セレステ麗)
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Job: Mecha Pilot, Chronicler/Archivist

Appearance:

Spoiler

__amano_tora_original_drawn_by_kazenoko_

Height: 5'5"
Weight: "You aren’t supposed to ask a woman that."

Depicted above is her general appearance around the Rebounder, however when she pilots her mecha, she tends to wear a different outfit.

Personality:

Spoiler

Rei is quite the outgoing young lady, one of the most outgoing that you could ever find on Mars. Being known for having an air about her that made her a social butterfly around her Mars colony, she always seems to be on the hunt for information regarding anything (planets, lifeforms, plant life, etc.) and she always ends up wanting to write it down in order to keep a record of everything she possibly can. After all, what sort of archivist and chronicler would she be if she couldn't keep proper notes. Speaking of notes, if one would end up looking into one of her many notebooks, they would find that Rei is quite thorough at note taking, explaining everything she can within a few sentences.

Aside from this, Rei is a carefree, friendly soul that truly yearns for adventure, as all young adults her age (give or take). While mostly serious in a bulk of situations, Rei does seem to be a bit of a flirt when it comes to others she deems worthy of possibly getting with her. Though in her mind, it has to be her that initiates the flirting...otherwise, the game is no longer any fun.

While piloting her mecha, Rei is always cautious in everything she does. Namely this is because the mech truly isn't hers but from a robotics company on Mars where she was able to intern at. Because of this, she never takes any risks and will avoid any methods or plans that suggest this, even having to voice opinions and suggest other alternatives just to help her side out. She also is always keen on trying to make mental notes and do daily checks and routines on her mecha in order to send back data to the company to better their research on how to better it.

Biography:

Spoiler

"Everything that's been going on, all stems from me wanting to know about that old planet...about it's prime..."

Born on Mars in the colony known as Erebus, Rei Celeste always seemed to find herself staring at the world that humans once called home: Earth. To her, it had always been a fascination to know and learn more and more about the place that once was known as home, well, learn more about it than was always told to her anyway. But why stop there? She wanted to learn more about as much as she could and then be able to relay this information to anyone else she could. This little curiosity and desire for information was the start of her want to get into the area of being a chronicler and archivist, to preserve information and history for future generations. Her parents were actually puzzled that she would want to go this route, given her love of mecha and the fact that her mother was a well known mecha pilot in the military.

That there raised a question...why couldn’t she strive for both?

With this in mind as Rei grew, she focused on her studies in many different history courses as she could to better suit her skills at being a skillful chronicler and archivist. At the same time, she did her best to hone her skills as a mech pilot, which landed her at getting somewhat of an internship at Artemis Robotics Inc. (ARI) as both a pilot and a record keeper for them. This little internship definitely worked for her benefit, to the point where she was presented the opportunity to pilot and use the latest mech: the Tartarus series, Void Leviathan IV. Things seemed to be going well for Rei in the long run.

Then came the opportunity of a lifetime. The voyage of the Rebounder, to parts unknown...oh the stories and history that could be recorded. Not wanting to waste such an opportunity, Rei requested to be apart of the Rebounder’s crew as their chronicler as well as mecha pilot. After all, this was the best of both worlds: she would be able to record the adventures of the Rebounder as well as give plenty of data of the Void Leviathan IV back to ARI all the while to help their research in bettering the Tartarus series.

This model is more durable than its predecessors, as their pilot data and battle data were taken and run through countless roboticists and engineers in order to perfect what the previous models had going for them along with tweaking and fixing problems that were clear and apparent.

It comes equipped with a beam rifle, a pulse shield, along with a beam sword and built-in vulcans.

Misc. Information

Rei‘s Theme | Battle Theme

  • Rei’s name can mean the following: Rei - a Japanese name, with the specific symbol (麗) translating this version of Rei to “beautiful, lovely”. Celeste - an English name with its roots in the Latin word “caelestis” which means “heavenly”.
  • The outfit that Rei wears in her mecha is outfit that is worn by Selesia from the anime Re:Creators, which was one of the first draft ideas for Rei's appearance before settling on the current.
  • The Mars colony that Rei was born and raised in, Erebus, is a reference to the Greek primordial deity that personified darkness.

"The future calls our name brothers and sisters!  Will you join me in reaching for it?"

Name: Julius Pfeiffer

Age: 20

Gender: Male

Job: Mech Pilot

Appearance:

Spoiler

08e87387adaa0f432cf274ae001e4daf30a0aa77

Height: 5'7"

Personality:

Spoiler

Optimistic and bright, Julius always sees the glass half full.  He believes in the best of people, and is always willing to go to bat for others.  He's never been known to talk down to others, rather inspire them into seeing their own potential.  However, this trait of his usually comes to bite him on the butt, as his naivety gets him taken advantage of quite often.  He has been lied to many times before, but he always falls for obvious tricks.  Still, he only sees the good in humanity.  To match this reckless generosity, he is also rather carefree and happy-go-lucky.  He spends his parents fortune like it was water flowing from the community faucet.  He doesn't even tend to spend much on himself, but he has been known to wear the latest fashions.

One would be a fool to think Julius too naive.  As the heir to a fortune, and being surrounded by the elite his whole life, Julius has a way of manipulating others.  Luckily, he would never do so in a negative way.  He has reached many a goal by just waving money around and doing favors.  He's not worried about getting his hands too dirty either, as he believes he is a good person regardless.

As a Mech Pilot, Julius is rather confident in his abilities.  He tends to try and end conflicts with one big punch, and spare his opponents, then to drag it on and risk the chance of having his teammates blow them away.  This tends to hurt him too, because when an enemy combatant is downed is when they tend to be the most dangerous.  His Mechs always seem to come in for frequent repair.

Biography:

Spoiler

Julius Pfeiffer was born to a wealthy family lineage on Mars.  Growing up on the red planet, he was always taught in his prestigious academies about the history of humanity, and where they had come from.  As a child, the progress of the human race was awe inspiring, and he wished to preserve human life while it furthered it's future into the universe!  However, he couldn't help but look past the stars and back to Earth, where many people still called home.  It had been reshaped into a shell of its former self.  Julius promised himself that one day he would return to Earth and lead it's people to a better tomorrow, where they could re-cultivate the once blue planet and start anew where they had once thrived.

To achieve this goal, Julius is willing to climb the ranks of the military and political parties to further Terraforming research in an attempt to re-terraform the Earth.  His first step in achieving this goal is to become a well known ace Mech Pilot, where he can gather a large following of people he can influence.

Mech Name: Megacillin-08 (a.k.a. Pilly)

Type: Juggernaut

Designer: PP Industries

Manufacturer: PP Industries

Mech Description: A force to be reckoned with, what Pilly lacks in speed and maneuverability, it makes up for with devastating and overwhelming strength.  If it's thrusters are set to max, it's nigh an unstoppable object.  It's armor seems almost impregnable at times, and most of it's joints are armored to the brim.

Mech Weaponry:

Megalo Cannon: The cannon on it's left arm.  Discharges highly condensed beams of positron energy.  Good for pinpoint precision, combined with destructive impact.  Discharges one positron battery.  both arms contain 5 batteries.

Megalo Knuckles: The knuckles of the mech are also able to discarge a burst of positron energy to maximize strikes.  discharges one battery.

Megalo Phalanx: The shield equipped to it's right arm.  Made of a more durable material than the rest of it's frame.  Can discharge one battery to lather the shield in positron energy, making it capable of reflecting and repelling most attacks.

Megalo Artpillery: The dual cannons on the back also function as thrusters.  They fire physical ammunition up to 100 miles away.  Their destructive capabilities are on par with ancient atomic weaponry.  Can detach from the main body.

Megalo Stare: Uses main power to unleash a laser from both of it's eyes.  Depending on how much charge is used, it can go from a concussive force, to a slicing beam.  Can only be fired straight forward.

They came to you in a dream.
“Go!” they ordered. “Board the Swallow Tail
      And fly west.”
Decided to host something of my own. I’ve been on this site long enough that it was bound to happen eventually. This is a fantasy journey RP with a hint of mystery to it. Part of a watchdog's duty, after all, is getting to the root of an area’s problem and flushing it out, and that requires some investigation. Or you could just call upon your patron to smite the place. After all, there can’t be a problem with the town if there’s no town to begin with.
I was thinkinking three to five players, though I suppose that depends on the level of interest. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have, and I hope you enjoy!

      ~Theme: Fire Emblem~

      <IC>
Hosted and Co-hosted by: Sethera and LordCowCow
The tale of the hero-king Augustus is passed down from parent to child all over the continent of Mysia. How he, ten other heroes, and the Great Dragon sealed the dark goddess Inera with the aid of the legendary sword Caliburn and the Fire Emblem. These heroes were known as the Twelve Crusaders, and they went on to establish the various countries that make up Mysia. Augustus in particular founded the kingdom of Galtea, where to this day his descendants rule.

It is said that only the blood of the hero-king can awaken the goddess from her slumber. With this in mind, the Order of Inera, a sect of holy men and women devoted to the dark goddess, devised a plan to steal one of the two children of King Reginald, the current ruler of Galtea. With the aid of goddess sympathizers in Augusta, they managed to kidnap Princess Catriona, using her blood at the Pontus shrine in a dark ceremony to revive the goddess. However, before they could complete the ceremony, the girl escaped.

Still, the ceremony wasn't without its consequences. Although they couldn't complete the ritual, the goddess was partially revived. With her awakening came undead horrors and Catriona herself ended up cursed, doomed to die before her next birthday.

Realizing the risk of returning to Augusta, where she might get kidnapped again, Catriona fled to the castle of Sochen, where her sister Penelope happened to be staying. After a tense reunion, they decided to set out for Ithome, the capital of Histia, where they might find more information on stopping the goddess and her curse.

Meanwhile, King Reginald has just received word of his daughter's return, the country that kidnapped her, and what they used her for. Pontus has gone too far this time...

Welcome aboard the Janissary! Don't mind how old the ship looks; it is that old, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more reliable ship. This here is an independent cargo ship, and you are part of its crew. What's that mean, you may wonder? Well, if you fancy the idea of adventuring across the stars, visiting far-off planets and meeting exotic peoples, all while turning a pretty penny in the freighter business and most definitely picking up some odd jobs on the side for extra cash, this just might be the job for you! Let's be honest with each other, you probably aren't enough of a thrill-seeker to be a bounty hunter or a pirate or something fancy like that, or else you wouldn't have signed up to work on a cargo ship, but as far as normal civilian jobs go, this is about as adventrous as you could possibly hope for!
Now, notice how I said independent cargo ship. We don't answer to the Consortium, or the Senate, or anyone else! We take jobs shipping cargo if we want to take the job, and honestly a good crew is hard to find in this line of work, so we'll make sure you're well taken care of here. And that means your input matters. We aren't about to try and drill into Orad Mus and find out what's under its surface, or try to single-handedly end the golden age of space piracy, but if enough of the crew wants to take or avoid a job within reason, that job's what we're doing. This isn't the story of the Galactic Union's finest heroes, or of spies trying to figure out what the hell those Sarvatti bastards are up to this time, or even of pirates raiding innocent vessels. No, this is just the story of a rusty old cargo ship and the group of spacefaring normies who live in it, and you're a key part of it just like everyone else on this ship.
