[DP23] Faithful Servant

Recommended Posts

The last Yugi card is here, and its another reference to an anime idiom.

DP23-JP003 Tamashii no Shimobe | Servant of the Soul/Faithful Servant
Quick-Play Spell

You can use the (2)nd effect with this card’s name only once per turn.
(1) Place on top of the Deck 1 card from your hand, Deck, or GY that has the name “Dark Magician” or specifically lists the card(s) “Dark Magician” and/or “Dark Magician Girl” in its text, except “Faithful Servant”.
(2) During your Main Phase: You can banish this card from your GY; draw cards equal to the number of “Palladium Oracle” monsters, “Dark Magician”, and/or “Dark Magician Girl” with different names on the field and in the GYs.

Notes: the idiom hinted at earlier is how in the anime Dark/Yami Yugi speaks about Dark Magician, which is a posthumous incarnation of Mahad, a high priest who served Pharaoh Atem (Dark Yugi’s living self) in ancient Egypt. The idiom may refer to a belief back then that, even in the afterlife, a pharaoh would need servants – initially this led to royal entourages being sacrificed upon their ruler’s death, but later on this practice was mercifully replaced by burying figures modeled after that entourage alongside him.

Not a Dark Magician deck expert, but I have mixed feelings towards this card. On one hand, it assists Dark Magical Circle by both making it live and letting you grab a more desirable DM or DM support Spell/Trap, even from the GY, plus it breaks even if you get DM on the board later on the turn. It makes pluses if you get the other listed monsters. On the other hand, it's a -1 without the Circle or listed monsters on board, and if your plays to set-up for or after this card are disrupted, this ends up dead.
