Rejoice, Masters!

The Holy Grail War is a ritual in which seven Masters and their Servants - manifestations of great figures from times since past - fight it out to claim a prize: The titular Holy Grail. This grand wish-granting relic can grant any wish. Even stupid ones. These Servants are divided up into seven different classes, each with different skillsets and the ability to use a Noble Phantasm, which could be considered an ultimate attack associated with that person's legends in some manner.

The purpose of this forum game is simply to see if we can make one work as a forum game. I of course do not have an omnipotent wish-granting device on hand, so the prize will mostly be bragging rights and personal enjoyment. Sorry about that. But there are some rules to follow, simply to ensure this thing can function and stay afloat, and some things to keep in mind as a Master. Relevant info has been sorted and spoilered for your convenience.

RULES

Spoiler

1: Each Holy Grail War is run by an officiator. In this case, me. While not an active participant (because that would be cheating), I should be considered as a referee and guide of sorts.

2: While most Holy Grail Wars have a rule that involves trying to keep things on the down-low and out of the public eye, that will be a lot more light-handed here for the sake of simplicity. As long as you aren't causing mass uproars with your magic and Servants, anything goes.

3: The last Master remaining who has a living Servant wins. However, Masters do not need to be killed to disqualify them!

BEING A MASTER

Spoiler

220?cb=20190407035219

As a Master, you are in command of a Servant so that you can fight in the Holy Grail War. If your Servant is killed, you are disqualified. Servants are also incredibly powerful, so you'll have to depend on yours for combat.

Just as a Master relies on their Servant, the Servant also relies on their Master. In this case, their reliance on you is because the Servant needs a source of mana to stay functional. If you die, your Servant won't be far behind because their mana will run out and they'll disappear.

Every Master has three Command Seals, powerful spells that can compel the Servant to do whatever is ordered of them. The officiator of a Holy Grail War can grant Masters additional Command Seals in certain conditions, but these are unlikely to come up. Having these Command Seals is also your proof of being a Master; if you lose all three of them by any means, you forfeit your right as your Servant's Master.

Masters are also (usually) mages! Try to think about what sort of magic you'd like to specialize in, and remember that you're limited only by your imagination, within reason. The details can be hashed out with me in private.

BUT WHAT ABOUT SERVANTS?

Spoiler

IgnorantFragrantAztecant-size_restricted

A Servant is a manifestation of a great figure in history or mythology. There are seven of these Servants in a Holy Grail War, each split up into a different class with different capabilities based on a class skill that Servants of that class have.

  • Saber-class Servants have both Magic Resistance and Riding, rendering them immune to some levels of magecraft and allowing them to command various vehicles with little problem. They are arguably the most powerful class, but are straightforward and often can't employ special strategies.
  • Archer-class Servants have Independent Action, allowing them to operate for an extended period of time without a Master supplying them mana. The most varied class and overall quite powerful, but the only guaranteed way to control an Archer is with Command Seals if they do not agree with their Master.
  • Lancer-class Servants have Magic Resistance, making them immune to various levels of magecraft in a similar fashion to Sabers. They are overall reliable Servants, specializing in long-ranged melee weapons like spears and lances, and are often a powerful class of Servant to summon.
  • Rider-class Servants have Magic Resistance and Riding, similar to Sabers, but tend to have higher-ranked Riding skills, making them able to use more vehicles and perform better with them. Often, Riders have powerful Noble Phantasms that can serve as a mount of some sort.
  • Caster-class Servants have Territory Creation and Item Creation, allowing them to alter an area to work in their favor and create magical items and tools. Typically possessing low attributes, combined with many Servants having Magic Resistance, they are often considered the weakest class, but are capable of employing unique strategies other classes simply can't access with their powerful magecraft.
  • Assassin-class Servants have Presence Concealment, which causes them to become difficult for others to locate, making them great spies or stealth killers. Although Assassins are overall weak Servants, this class specializes in killing Masters directly, rather than performing in straight fights with other Servants.
  • Berserker-class Servants have Madness Enhancement, sacrificing the Servant's rationality for great increases in power. While arguably the strongest class, simply keeping a Berserker active takes a heavy toll on the Master's mana, and a Servant of this class is often difficult to control.

Servants can also be put into a spirit form to conserve the Master's mana, have a telepathic link with their Master, and come into the era they're summoned to equipped with basic knowledge that allows them to function in that time. And of course, having one is what qualifies you for the Holy Grail War. Keeping your Servant's True Name a secret is advised, as if people know your Servant's name, they'll also know any unique weaknesses that Servant has. If you were to summon Achilles for instance, telling others your Servant's name would alert others to target his heels.

Servants also have a set of stats, ranked with a letter grade from E up to A, and then an EX rank for special cases. To explain them simply, STR is your Servant's physical strength, END is how much of a beating they can take, AGI is their mobility, MP is how much magical energy they can handle, LUK is their luck, and NP is how powerful their Noble Phantasm is. Modifiers like + and - exist for certain scenarios too. There are also skills that receive these same ranks, but there are too many of them to explain quickly. The curious reader can find an index of Servant skills here.

CITY MAP

Spoiler

Map.png

A Holy Grail War wouldn't be complete without a city to have it in! For this purpose, I've generated a city map that will be used for all Holy Grail Wars in this thread, complete with a key you can find below with helpful insight and possibly some strategic hints. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Red - Harbor District: Storage lots, docks, fisheries, and more! There's also a lighthouse next to the local church. Perhaps the seaside locale could be taken advantage of somehow?

Orange - Old Town: Do you like classic Japanese architecture, cobbled roads, and gift shops? You'll feel right at home here. There's also lots of nooks and crannies to hide in, and tall buildings to watch the streets from.

Yellow - "Little Vegas": Casinos, bars, hotels, and all those sorts of facilities for people who want to live it up when the sun goes down. Not very active in the mornings or afternoons, but opportunistic and materialistic Masters might like it here come nightfall.

Green - The Slums: Income's low, crime rate's high, and life's not good. A resourceful Master (or Servant) might be able to make something of this place though.

Blue - Bulk Storage: Lots of warehouses. LOTS of warehouses. Surely one can find an advantage to take in this part of town.

Purple - Industrial District: Factories and other industrial buildings can be found on the outskirts of the city.

1 - Church: The base of operations of your friendly neighborhood officiator (that's me!) and a neutral zone where combat isn't permitted. Acts of aggression within this building will be met with disqualification. An old graveyard can be found just behind the building proper.

2 - Park: A nice natural park. Perfect for getting some green in your view.

3 - Wall: A high wall, from the top of which you can see everything going on within its boundaries. Humans can't scale the wall, of course, but perhaps certain Servants can.

4 - Abandoned House: A mysterious house that seems to come back no matter how many times it's demolished. The local graveyard has been moved to go around this rather spooky home. Could be quite the quaint house with some TLC.

5 - Cold Storage: A cold storage warehouse that was supposed to be shut down years ago. Somehow, everything inside still functions. Could make a decent base of operations if one doesn't mind the cold.

6 - Mountains: It's just some mountains. There's trees and rocks, and a couple rusty old shacks.

7 - Forest: Do you like trees? You'll love this place then. Easy to get lost in these woods if you aren't paying attention.

8 - An Island: Just an island, big enough to stick a few houses on if one wanted to. Nothing special about it.

HOW TO PLAY

Spoiler

I apologize in advance for the length of this one, but I had a lot of info to cover. I tried to be as brief as possible, but it still wound up being a bit of a read.

This forum game operates largely like a D&D game or a text adventure. Simply put, you'll be presented with the situation at hand and have to figure out an appropriate course of action for yourself. Let it be known however, that the Holy Grail War is not as simple as "run down the other Masters and claim the prize." You'll be encouraged to think creatively, strategize, and come up with unique solutions to ordinary problems to claim victory. Of course, you're not the only person on your team. If you aren't sure how to continue, feel free to consult your Servant or pay the officiator a visit at the local church. You might get some interesting insight. There are other aspects to the game's workings though, which will be described in brief below. Any questions about the game's runnings should be posted in this thread so I can add them to an answers post.

BEING A MAGE
Masters - most of the time, anyway - are mages. That's exactly what you think it is; you do magic and stuff. When starting the game, you should figure out a theme to base your magic around in true Fate spirit. You're only limited by your imagination and what is considered reasonable here, so get creative! Mages are also encouraged to keep their craft out of the public eye, but that rule is loosened up here. As long as you aren't causing mass disturbances, you'll be fine.

RECEIVING YOUR SERVANT
At the start of the Holy Grail War, I'll randomize who gets what Servants until at least three Masters have a Servant from the class they requested. At this point, I'll PM each Master participating in the Holy Grail War with full information on the Servant they've summoned. Keeping this info on the down-low is advised, as once something is revealed in this thread, it will be added to the main post until the Holy Grail War is over, and information is a powerful thing.

COMBAT
Combat between Servants will be handled by me, and I'll direct the fight according to instructions from Masters participating in this combat and post frequent updates on how the fights are going so Masters can give new orders as needed. In the case of Masters confronting each other directly and using their magic, I'll be the judge of how this or that spell goes down.

EXPLORING THE CITY
You might want to find yourself a place to set up shop during this Holy Grail War, or go searching for something special like a vantage point. For those reasons, you shouldn't focus entirely on fighting, and explore the town too! This part will play out a bit more like an RP, but still mostly text-adventure-esque. You tell me what you wanna do/say, and I'll handle how it goes.

COMMAND SEALS
Powerful spells that make your Servant do as you tell them. You get three and only three of these at the start of the Holy Grail War, but the officiator (me) may reward you with more depending on certain circumstances.

HOW TO WIN
The last Master who has a living Servant wins the Holy Grail War. If you die, you are disqualified. If your Servant dies, you are disqualified. Of course, you don't have to kill everyone yourself to win. Alliances and traps are all fair. In fact, as long as you adhere to the above "don't cause mass panic," this is a game where anything goes.

REWARDS
This paragraph will be replaced after the first NCM Holy Grail War. I'm considering a system of rewards to be distributed at the end of a HGW to the winner, and to other players based on actions taken. Currently, I'm thinking about rewards of varying value for the following, but numbers will have to be figured out after the HGW is over:

  • Winning the Holy Grail War
  • Additional points (to any player) for each Servant/Master killed
  • Additional points (to any player) for each Servant whose True Name they reveal
  • Additional points (to all living players) for each remaining Command Seal?
  • Bonus points that can be rewarded for notable feats that change the course of a Holy Grail War

You know I'd be joining in. As for Servant class, I'm leaning more towards Rider, however I will also be happy with anything. So that I'll leave to your discretion.

I got a couple of questions.
Is this some kind of RP then, or more like a DnD game where a scenario is presented and the players have to choose what to do, or I guess in this case which Seals to apply? What are players as masters supposed or allowed to do?
Is the game really limited to only 7 players, each assigned with the servants displayed in the opening thread? That's kind of dull, I was already thinking in a Mechaba-like Raider servant xD

You don't have to use Command Seals for everything (you'd run out really fast if you did), but otherwise it operates more like a DnD game than an RP. I present the situation, the players involved react accordingly, and from there I figure out how combat/recon/whatever worked out and update players appropriately. I'll have more details on this once I've got seven Masters.

Yes. That's how Holy Grail Wars are unless it's Fate/Apocrypha, and I don't wanna have to manage 14 of you people. Once I've got seven Masters signed up, I'll randomize the Servants until at least three people have the class they specified they'd prefer. For instance, Tormented said he wants Saber, but he could just as easily end up with the Lancer that Saikazo wants if that's how it goes. I had to pick the identities of these Servants myself for ease of access when setting up skills, Noble Phantasms, etc.

Speaking of which, quoting your post is a good opportunity to mention I did some tweaking to the Servants roster, but it's very minor stuff. Not every Servant has four skills, but since I copy-pasted the ???'d Saber info for the others, it wound up looking that way. For ease of reference, the new skill counts are below. I should also note that these include class skills.

Saber: 4 skills, including class skills Magic Resistance and Riding
Archer: 4 skills, including class skill Independent Action
Lancer: 5 skills, including class skill Magic Resistance
Rider: 4 skills, including class skills Riding and Magic Resistance
Caster: 5 skills, including class skills Territory Creation and Item Creation
Assassin: 3 skills, including class skill Presence Concealment
Berserker: 2 skills, including class skill Madness Enhancement

Should this change anyone's mind on what class they'd want, please speak up.

Idk much about Fate but this looks like it could be interesting so I guess I'll join. Leaning toward Archer or Caster but more Archer. Caster has a cat tho which is neat.

Might as well kick this off and see how it works.

>Going to go explore the Old Town.

Your scoping out of Old Town was quite successful! You and your Servant have identified several choke points, ambush spots, and escape routes, especially along the perimeter of the city's old wall. You've also found a few manholes leading down into the sewer system if you want/need to go down there for whatever reason.

Alright let's do this then!

>Going to explore the Harbor District [Red Area]

Checking out the seaside properties in town, it seems like the piers and docks still see a fair bit of use these days. There's even a cargo ship docked right now, unloading its colorful storage crates with the help of cranes and the like. The general area of the harbor district also has a decent few warehouses here and there, no doubt filled with valuables ripe for the taking if you're feeling bold. Even at this late hour, fisheries are sorting and storing the catches brought in from various fishing boats. If it were daytime right now, you could probably see the island from here if you've got a good set of peepers.

2 hours ago, REP said:

Not entirely sure how this is gonna work, but sure let's go

>Go To: [Cold Storage]

You have arrived at Cold Storage. The lot seems to be pretty much vacant, both of people around it and stored wares inside it. It's pretty cold inside (hence the name), pretty empty, and there are some rooms in the back, probably where employees used to be stationed when the place was officially in operation.

>Go to [Industrial District]

Factories, foundries, and other wondrous buildings responsible for modern industrialization are spread out before you. Every so often, a truck leaves one of the buildings or pulls into one to drop off its load. If nothing else, your Servant certainly seems fascinated. Especially by an older factory - it looks like it might date back to the 19th Century - that's - aside from quite old - clearly showing its age, what with the chipped smokestacks, cracked walls, and impressive lack of lighting.

Let it be known that although I am a fair and impartial officiator, I am also a fickle god outside of that role. Also, don't be afraid to do more than one thing at a time. I used to run a straight-up text adventure where I'd have to deal with a bunch of inputs per post, so move at a pace you desire if there's a few things you want to cover all in one shot. Now may also be a good time to start thinking about your own magic if you haven't already. Assistance on that front can be provided as requested.

>Search area

Upon closer inspection and checking out a few buildings, most of what you find isn't anything special. Some unremarkable warehouses, colorful storage crates, the likes. Pretty standard stuff, until...

source.gif

An explosion from one of the warehouses near the ocean! Whatever was in it is probably gone now, and late-night workers are already fleeing the scene and making sure on their way out that nobody was injured. There aren't any lasting flames, fortunately, but the doors and roof of the warehouse are well and truly fucked, along with any poor sap that might be inside at the moment.

Going to da slums

> Go to slums

You go to check out the slums of the city, and your Servant notes that they'll be in spirit form for now to avoid drawing attention, not long before you arrive. It's certainly not a nice place. Shoddy roads, barred windows, the works. Certainly a place you could see someone referring to as "the hood" in a movie or TV drama. You're also pretty sure you've heard at least one gunshot since arriving, but aren't certain. What you are certain about though, is the sound of an explosion coming from somewhere on the other side of the wall separating the slums and the harbor district.

Followed very briefly by no less than three tall, lanky thugs approaching you. They certainly don't look like diplomatic sorts, and one's carrying a knife right in the open.

8 hours ago, Blake said:

>search 19th century factory

As you and your Servant enter the factory, the latter seems intent on observing the small details of the place while you look around.

"And I thought I was an old wreck," the Servant jokes. As they wipe a bit of the thick dust from the wall, they continue "Decrepit, gloomy, clearly neglected... I believe, Master, that we could make something of this place."

6 hours ago, REP said:

>Search: [Cold Storage]

The inside of the warehouse is altogether unimpressive. While there are large storage crates throughout, it doesn't seem like anything's in them anymore. As you check out the back rooms though, you find what you can only assume was a security office of sorts. Even more peculiar is that  everything's still perfectly functional, and you have access to live camera feeds of various spots inside of and around the cold storage.

2 hours ago, Skaia said:

>Go to a Gift Shop

No reason not to pick up a souvenier to remember your Holy Grail War by, right? You swing by one of the gift shops in the area that's still open at this hour, and are greeted by an old woman behind the counter. On the side of the counter is an old CRT TV set to the local news channel. There's souveniers, snacks, and a few other miscellaneous odds and ends, all at pretty reasonable prices. Then the TV screen flashes red with a breaking news update. Apparently, there's been an explosion at the harbor district and police are already on the way to investigate.

Not really used to this kind of format.

> Go to: Bulk Storage

You don't have to put it in so formally if it makes you uncomfortable. Everyone else just kinda decided to do it that way, probably because I mentioned text adventures multiple times and those always start with the lil' arrows. Anyway:

You opt to explore the large storage area of town first. Why so much of the city's space is devoted purely to storage is unclear, but it does mean there's plenty of large buildings, no real reason for people to come around here, and overall a great place to do things on the down-low if you want to keep your operations subtle, especially if you can take out those pesky security cameras somehow. Your Servant - like some others - is currently in spirit form, but suddenly bombards your mind with a message.

"A vision! That... that way!" Although you can't see your Servant, you understand the general direction they're pointing at. The old cold storage warehouse a few blocks away from here. "No... there?" Suddenly, the direction changed, toward the industrial district. "...both?"
