I'll go silently brood against a wall away from the cops, like all people doing a telepathic anime stakeout do.

I'll ask my servant if they think it was caused by another mage. Also to ask how the cop's investigation seems to be going.

"Negative. The damage in here is too sloppy to be the work of magecraft. Whoever caused this did it with mundane means, like a pack of dynamite. No signs of robbery either. The police are taking inventory of what should be in here and checking for any evidence that could help them track down the culprit. They don't seem very good at their job." And then, silence. Your Servant remained quiet for a bit, before materializing next to you, donning a rather inconspicuous and much more time-appropriate outfit. "Whoever did this probably did it as a distraction," they tell you. "A second explosion like they're fearing seems unlikely, and they'll probably end up emptying the place or tightening up security. Also, I grabbed a change of clothes on the way out, to avoid drawing attention while materialized."

"The only thing I've seen of note lately is that Servant of yours, and the arrogant mage he belongs to. If I remember anything from when I tried to make it in mage society, the church should have that Grail you want hidden somewhere, waiting for it to be primed and ready to grant wishes, if it's anywhere at all." The girl points her knife down to her fallen comrades, continuing "I would have liked it if you didn't kill these idiots, but I'm used to losing men. Those two could hardly pull their own weight anyway." The girl then gets closer, examining Lancer up close. She pulls the mask back up over her mouth, before concluding "I've told you what you want. Now, unless you've got business with me, get the hell out of my territory."

You and your Servant raid a few warehouses, grabbing what the two of you can carry. Your Servant - being a Servant and all - can hold quite a lot more weight than you. You end up grabbing a variety of things, from food to building materials and a few odds and ends in between. You then ask your Servant what to do next, as they lead the way back to your newfound base.

"Once we bring this stuff back home, our next move should be to seek out an ally. By eliminating even one enemy and turning them into a friend, our odds become much better; two versus five instead of one versus six is nearly thrice as favorable. We also have quite a base of operations to offer, with plenty of space for both them and us. However, I don't have any way to locate these other Servants myself."

"Of course I'm enjoying it! If you told me when I was alive that this was the future, I'd likely laugh at you. This era is something you truly have to see to believe." As your Servant sits down at a poker table, insisting you grab a seat next to them, the Servant continues in response to your idea of getting supplies, "If I may make a suggestion, Master. This place is a hotel," as the dealer hands out new hands to the assembled players at the table. "If you catch my drift."

Getting off from the wall, I'll look to my servant and say, "those suit you."

Next I'll confirm with my servant that we know neither the perp nor their motive, as far as what they're distracting the police from is, and figure that the best thing to do now is just watch the news and wait for an update.

After that, I'll apologize for having us go in circles and go back to the pagoda in old town. Once there, I'll ask them if it is indeed locked, or if there's an entrance of window higher up on the building we can get into from. I'll also look around to see if there's anyone around currently.

You and your Servant play some poker, to see where things take you. Where things took you personally was a lot of losing hands, but your Servant has been earning enough success to prompt a wary look from the dealer, not to mention the hateful glares from the other patrons. After sucking dry the wallets of at least a dozen customers who weren't exactly short on cash, your Servant finally steps back from the table, stuffing their winnings into your pockets. Is this what a winning lottery ticket feels like?

"Go on, Master. Fetch us a room to stay in. It's technically on the house, isn't it?"

"Hmph." Narrowing his eyes, Saber stares you down. "I can sense the presence of a Servant near you. That makes you either our ally or our enemy. If you've no purpose here... no, I'm getting ahead of myself. Master. Your orders, please."

Your Servant - seeming quite pleased by your remark - confirms that the only thing you as a pair know about this explosion is that it was no accident. They don't mind to seem the back-and-forth path you've led them in, and eyes the pagoda you've returned to. Five stories, not really all that big per floor but certainly enough to make something of each story. The pagoda roofs jutting out from each story would also make the building really hard to scale for a person. But a person a Servant is not.  "I'll go look on the other stories. Please remain here for a bit, Master."

Your Servant then leaps up to the second story roof, circling around the building's length to confirm a lack of windows or other usable points of entry. Then the third story. Fourth story. Finally, on the fifth story, you can hear your Servant's voice in your mind. "There's a balcony on the top story, facing the ocean, and a window on the opposing side. I'll be back down there shortly, unlocking the door from the inside."

And as promised, you soon after hear a click on the other side of the door, followed by the door sliding open with your Servant standing on the other side. "It's pretty dusty in here, but that means nobody's been inside for some time."

"Have you seen this place?" Gesturing around you, the girl continues "This is where people with no other option end up living. The only notable things that happen here are shootouts and police making arrests." She then points her knife up the road, toward the rest of the city. "If you want me to not tell other Masters you're here, the best way to stop that is to not be here. I have no reason to interfere with your Holy Grail War, and I sure as hell don't plan on harboring someone who offs two of my men to make a point."

In your search for allies, you head into the city proper and ask around about any rumors of unusual happenings. One rather angry-looking man in an expensive suit tells you that there's someone in Little Vegas who's apparently sucking the slot machines dry. It may not be strictly related to Servants or Masters, but you decide that checking it out is as good a start as any. Further asking in that part of town brings you to a casino called Gold & Bold. A place which - upon entering - your Servant stops briefly.

"Oh yes. This is certainly the place. I can sense the presence of another Servant in this building."

The "where" isn't too hard to piece together. Quite a crowd has built up, surrounding the slot machines, so much so that neither you nor your Servant can see who's causing all the ruckus. All you can hear is the slot machines constantly making sounds that indicate a winner, with a few losing beeps here and there. You consult your Servant once again.

"I can't imagine these casinos are made to let patrons win, lest they'd go bankrupt. Perhaps this Servant has a skill of some sort? Perhaps not the most practical option for securing us a winning ally, but we've come all the way across town. Whenever the crowd disperses or we're met with this other Master/Servant duo ourselves, we should speak with our mysterious winners."

@Are You Okay?

As another slot machine coughs up the last of its prizes - this being the fourth one to fall victim to your Servant - their head suddenly perks up, making a sharp turn toward the doors. They nudge you with their elbow. "Hey. There's a Servant somewhere in this building. Besides me. Stay on guard, just in case they're hostile."

"Of course, Master." Saber watches your new guest warily, eyes peeled for anything suspicious. Seems he won't be using any swordplay just yet though.

Luckily, it seems this won't escalate into a fight. You depart, with Saber's eyes not once moving away from you until you leave. However, your Servant did mention two locations in their vision, so you decide to head for the other one. It's a bit of a trek, but you eventually find yourself amidst a number of factories. The one your Servant seems interested in is quite a bit older than others. As you step in, however, your body immediately drops down on a mat behind the door. Try as you might, you can't seem to get up from it.

Must have been a trap of some kind.

Your Servant seems quite pleased with the praise you've given them. As you check out the pagoda you've gotten into, you take notes of the layout. The exact function of this building is only getting more confusing, but it seems as if the third floor was supposed to be where whoever was here last might have lived. The only other major point of note is a quartet of pillars shooting up through the middle of each floor, between which you can see the rest of the way down the pagoda with the second and higher floors having an intentional hole in the middle. Aside from the door out to the balcony and the window opposite it, the fifth floor seems devoid of anything else besides a very obviously-aged bell.

Might be best not to mess with that bell, since it looks like it could fall off its supports and down five stories at any moment if you prod it wrong. As you step out onto the balcony to check out the view, you notice that from here, you can see just about everything within the city's ancient wall. You can see the church where the officiator is holed up, you can see a park area not too far from that, and you can even see the warehouse you investigated earlier, and right past it you can see all the way out to the ocean. You remark that it will make a good lookout post.

"A very good post," your Servant agrees. "Its proximity to the wall means I'll also be able to scout around up there, observing anything going on just outside in the rest of the city. Will we be staying here, Master?"

As you and your Servant head for the room you checked in for - opting for something big so you have room to practice magecraft, not to mention you can afford it now - you crack a joke to the latter on the elevator ride up. "Ahah, nothing that noble," they laugh. "Let's just say, it's only cheating if you get caught. Otherwise, it's simply 'opportunistic bending of the rules'. That's only part of it of course - a good bluffing game is a must - but I see no reason to acquire all this money earnestly if we're giving it all back to the hotel anyway."

As you and Lancer head out from the scene, you ask how he thinks you should handle the situation. "Good question." Looking over to the imposing and very old wall separating the slums from the harbor, Lancer eventually answers "Strictly speaking, that woman had no reason to hide any information from us, and seems rather territorial. Prying further could alienate her and whoever's under her command. And that could make her more willing to ally with other Masters if it comes with the promise that they'll eliminate us. I'd much rather be forging an alliance than fighting one."

Suddenly, a look appeared on his face. "However. She did say the church has the Grail, right? If you're more interested in investigating the prize than who we have to fight for it, seems we have our first lead."

As the two of you cash in your winnings, your Servant keeps looking around, trying to find that other Servant they detected. However, they can't see anyone of the sort through the crowd, which continues to follow the two of you until you leave the casino, asking for handouts out of your newfound wealth. They seem to give up when it's clear that your Servant ignores them at best and casts them glares at worst. Speaking of which, the only people glaring at you seem to be casino staff, clearly miffed that you've won as big as you have today when they're not busy exclaiming their surprise to one another.

"A reasonable course of action." Saber returns to the second floor to rejoin you in the computer room. Some sniffing around in old files on the security computer itself mostly tells you more about the history of this warehouse in the most boring way possible. It's just logs of shipments coming and going, with the log suddenly ending eight years ago. Whoever worked in this room got a pretty impressive record time on Minesweeper, though. While you check around for anything else of note in the files, Saber has his eyes on the cameras.

Nothing interesting seems to be happening.

They think about it for a bit, and even take another glance over the inner city as if looking for a topic. Their eyes settle on the church. Oh yes, it's quite visible, and quite tall too. As if to test its age, Lancer gives it a prod with the hilt end of his weapon.

lancer.png

"Honestly? I've seen better. Much better." Seems the wall's too tall for Lancer to just jump up to the top of though, even using nearby houses as a starting point. "I wonder..." Lancer then spun his weapon around in his hand, thrusting the pointy end through the wall. Yes. This could work. "It would be a bit of a rocky climb, but I think I can get us up to the top of this. It would certainly make for a nice vantage point."

@Are You Okay?

You check in with the staff before leaving, but it seems they don't really have any explanation for how one man was able to effectively rob them through completely honest means. The best you've got is one of them uttering that it should be statistically impossible. However, you don't want to lose track of your lead. You and your Servant try to keep some distance - enough for yours to track the other one - as the path they take gets more and more complicated and twisted. Until it heads into a dark alley. As you turn to enter, you're very suddenly met with a man with a scarred face.

"If you've been trying to stay hidden, you're doing a pretty shit job of it. I'll get right to business: What's so important that you've been stalking us since we left the casino?"

Offer an alliance. Our ingenuity for their luck. Better to be top 2 than die trying, right?

Tell them to feel free to follow, as a sign of trust, and return to base. If any traps would be encountered, avoid them without making a show.
