NeoCardMaker Holy Grail War

Recommended Posts

"Don't worry about it. I like dogs," I comment as I get comfortable. "Okay well, this is a strange situation," I say. "But the easiest explanation I have is that there are some big time gangs and big corporations playing a sick game. In this city, they have sent out seven heirs to large inheritances, and a bodyguard with them. They have to now kill each now, and the last person standing inherits all the combined fortunes. Why they're doing it is beyond me, but I've been thrown into this game, and I plan to survive," I shift in the couch.

"What I want is to hire people familiar with this city, people who have their ears to the ground, so I can keep track of these other heirs and their bodyguards. I can figure out what they're doing, where their bases are set up, and take them out systematically. This is my offer. Ten thousand dollars for your help, and that's just a down payment. After I survive this war and get the rest of the fortunes, you can name your price for helping me. You want a giant mansion on a hill and 50 million dollars? I'd give you that and a new car every Christmas. If you know anyone else that would be willing to help, this same offer goes to them as well. So, what do you say?"

The way I see it is we can eliminate individuals that are on their own or stay and wait for us to be the last standing."

lancer.png

"Hmmmm..." The telepathic link went silent for a bit, as Lancer thought over the situation. "Waiting it out until it's just us and one other team isn't a feasible strategy. If we end up against something like Caster or Assassin, we could secure an easy victory like that, but this also introduces the chance of having to face Berserker, which isn't a class of Servant I'd like to face off with one-on-one, and there's no telling what the other Servants are capable of either. Your idea of picking off lone individuals would be better-suited to an Assassin, but an Assassin I am not. If we want to walk the path of least resistance and secure a safe victory, we'll still have to take some risks. Namely, we need to see to the removal of Saber and especially Berserker. Finding other Masters who want one or the other gone would be a good way to start going about that. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, or something. If we consider that ally a threat too, we can deal with them once our mutual enemy is disposed of."

The thing, as it turns out, was a cat. A black cat. No wonder nobody could see it in that dark house! It doesn't seem fond of the candy bar you left, after you helped it get the wrapper open, but with a glowing Saber in tow, you're now free to explore the rest of the house. You make a note to bring tuna next time. In the meantime, there are other things to do, like setting up the house into a suitable base. You go about the process, taking care to keep the cat in mind too, and resume exploration. Once you get past the worn and weathered aesthetic and the cat having made a scratching post of all the furniture, it's actually a pretty nice place!

saber.png

"Here, Master." Saber removes one of his gauntlets, and hands it to you. Still glowing, of course. "Do what you must to establish this as your base of operations if you so desire. I'm going to investigate the area around here for anything unusual." With that, Saber made his way out the door, and around the house, into the graveyard surrounding it. You, in the meanwhile, have observed that the house has an attic, as well as a basement. The cat taking some haphazard leaps up off some furniture and into the attic gives you the idea that that must have been where he was hiding during his downtime.

I'll go back to home base and lock the door behind me. The other servant is something to consider, but, it's probably best for us to lay low in the morning. Then we can go do some recon, and maybe learn more about our little bomber friend. Do you have any place specifically you want to scope out?"

You return back to base and lock up. Time to relax some, as you share some chicken wings with your Servant. They seem hesitant at first, but soon enough give it a try. There's a pause as your Servant chews and swallows.

"It's terrible," they conclude. "There's an exterior with mild amounts of crunchiness and some sort of seasoning to give it a hint of a spicy flavor, but the inside isn't given the same treatment. The food is greasy and tastes like too much oil was used... and it's plain to see that's the point. So, for being a terrible food in those ways, I have to commend it for doing its job rather well. I can't say I'm looking forward to eating a lot of these if we win the Holy Grail and I get to be incarnated, but there's no harm in them either."

>Begins to scout the area

You and your Servant scope out the island. It's pretty small, so the task doesn't take all that long. You manage to find a small group of palm trees along the coast, facing out into the ocean, but that's the only real feature of note. Aside from that and the terrain roughly in the middle being wet and marshy, it's all open area without much in the way of cover or strategic ambush points.

"It's perfect."

"Sounds like pretty serious business." The boy gets up from his spot on the couch, and lets out a distinct whistle. From elsewhere in the house, a large black dog - more of a horse than a dog in size - comes running to his side. "Hello, Alpha~ Meet our new friends." The big dog - apparently her name is Alpha - walks on over to where you and Archer are, giving each of you a good sniff over. She gives you a lick. Archer gets a curious look from the dog. Her owner, meanwhile, steps up to a whiteboard near the couch, wiping it off. As he started drawing up a rough map of the city slums, he said "Name's Hifumi by the way. Hifumi Takanashi."

Before long, his map was done, complete with extra borders and some labels. "Seeing as we're in cahoots now, I should give you a heads-up that not the entire slum is mine. We're split up into three gangs. This bit down here is Wild Hounds turf; that's my gang. Up here is the Thunderheads, and their boss is my sister. And over here is the Zero Clan. Now, I like to think I treat my people pretty well. These other two? Nuh-uh. The Thunderheads are more like cruel dictators than a gang, and that Zero Clan? They're the worst ones! They'll kill anyone for any reason, and you can't even kill their members! I shot one of their guys in the head like five times the other day, and he's still walking around like it was nothing! Some people, I swear..."

archer.png

"Are you taking note of all this?" Archer asks you, examining the map. "If we're aiding one gang, the other two might not appreciate us all that much."

Conjuring up a ball of light, you look down the hole. It's quite deep. This mine must have been pretty big before it got shut down. From up here, you can see a few other tunnels along the walls of this big hole, and evidence of minecart tracks poking out of said tunnels. The hole's deep enough that your bones surely wouldn't appreciate falling down there, but a Servant would certainly be able to take the fall and be none the worse for wear.

"Well, it's nice to meet ya Hifumi," I say before listening to Archer. "That's a good point Archer...," I mutter as I stare at the map. "So, you say the Zero Gang can take bullets to the head, and keep walking?" That didn't... Seem natural, and well worth looking into. "Alright, I think they're the biggest problems right now. I'll have to try to take them out before they catch wind of your gang getting help and attack ya," I turn back to Hifumi. "Say, you got a phone number I can contact ya with? And maybe, if you got it, a picture of the leader of the Zero Gang?"

Day 2 of the Holy Grail War begins now. Due to some key points that come up in parts of this post as I timeskip us ahead, I'll be revealing all the Servants' faces - and thus, their Masters - in this post. Which, anyone with any deductive ability at all should have been able to figure out the last two by now, so this is really no big deal.

"That's why it's perfect. Nowhere for them to hide." You spend some time setting up traps throughout the island, including a few in points that your Servant suggests trapping. However, being a flesh and blood human, you still need to sleep. Since the island isn't ready just yet, the two of you return to the hotel. You did pay for a nice room, after all, and so you might as well use it.

You take the steps needed to set up this house as a base of operations. By the time you're done, the place is still looking rather run-down, but it's quite secure! And of course, the cat will be safe too. You head into the basement, perhaps expecting something interesting. If this was among your expectations, however, you find yourself quite disappointed. The only notable thing about the basement is that it's quite spacious. You could use this room for whatever you wanted, provided you've got the materials for it. In the meantime, though, getting some rest doesn't seem bad. You find your way into a bedroom, and the bed - despite being rather torn up - is actually surprisingly comfortable.

"You're preaching to the choir here. Here's my number, and a picture of the Zero boss." Hifumi and you exchange contact details, and Hifumi then goes into his phone's pictures, looking for the gang boss. When he finds a picture, he turns the phone around to show you a photo of a girl. "That's the lady. Her name's Cordula Bachmayer. My dogs have noticed she leaves the slums every so often, coming back with new recruits each time." Alpha lets out a deep bark, and a second one, as the door opens up to reveal some more human-looking company than the dogs that have been running around. "Thanks for your time. I'll keep in touch with anything I learn about these guys you want dead."

Pointing back out the entrance of the mine, through which you can see the sun slowly starting to creep over the horizon, she continues "Your allies. The meeting..." She went quiet. "And the officiator...?" Although you didn't explore the hole, you did spend some time turning the mine into a viable base of operations before going to sleep.

Day 2
Remaining Masters: 7

@LordCowCow

saber.png

As you wake up, you're met first with the sight of the cat that's been living in this house. The next thing you notice is Saber, looking out the window and into the graveyard, on alert. "Good afternoon, Master." Pointing to a few spots in the graveyard where the soil was a bit different if you really looked closely, Saber stated "Last night, I encountered a young lady in the graveyard. As they were no threat to you within this house, and clearly lacked harmful intent against you, I chose to leave them be and observe. It would appear we have a graverobber, visiting in the dead of night and taking entire bodies across the wall with them."

@Saikazo

archer.png

Wherever you found yourself spending the night, you wake up to find your phone has a few unread messages, all from Hifumi.

hey, just wanted to let you know that you can feed my dogs whatever. even stuff dogs shouldn't eat, like chocolate. they'll be fine, i promise.

got some juicy rumors. turns out some madman hit up the casinos last night and made a killing! might be linked to your death game?

well, this is awkward. the rumors about the casino guy are split. some of them describe the guy in a way that matches up with that friend of yours, and some of them sound nothing like him.

yeah, my place at noon. bring pizza. with pineapple. i don't care what the world says, that stuff's delicious.

sorry, wrong number

"Real talkative type, this Hifumi guy." Seems like Archer's been keeping watch. And grabbing himself a few beers, judging by the empty bottles that weren't there when you went to sleep. "But that network you wanted might be paying off. Don't forget, we also have to meet up with Caster and Berserker's Masters soon. If we're paying Hifumi a visit along the way, we'd better make it quick."

@Tormented

lancer.png

And just how did we end up here again? As the sun sits high and proudly in the sky, you awaken within the church. The wrap-up of last night is pretty hazy, but you do recall the officiator insisting you at least spend the night in the church, and he was pretty adamant about it. That additional boy you saw last night is also still here, in what at first looked like a staring contest with Lancer. It's pretty clear there's more to it than that though. Once Lancer notices your eyes have opened though, he turns his attention away from the extra and back to you.

"Afternoon, Master. I imagine a lot of other Masters have set themselves up in one way or another by now. This is where our Holy Grail War truly begins." The bed you slept on wasn't especially comfortable. It sure beats sleeping on one of the pews out there though.

@Chaos Sonic

rider.png

"Wakey wakey, Master." The evidence that Rider's been pretty generous about using room service is clear, but it's also obvious that he had the decency to keep things quiet so as not to wake you up, and he was pretty good about cleaning up after himself too. Gesturing out the window and in the direction of the island you visited last night, he says "We've got a whole day of Holy Grail Warring ahead of us. Best not to keep those other Masters waiting to get their teeth kicked in."

@Blake

caster.png

You rise from your slumber as the time for your meeting draws near. Most of the factory is entirely undisturbed, exactly the same as it was before you went to sleep last night. You do note, however, that Caster has left the door to his workshop open. You can hear strange noises coming from inside. "Just a little bit of this, and... perfect! Not my finest work by any means, but certainly usable." Caster then comes out of the workshop, handing you the fruits of his labor. "Keep it on you, okay?" Caster glances around the fairly empty factory. "Sure wish I knew a thing or two about golems. Or interior decorating. This place could use a little sprucing up after we've had our cohorts over."

@Skaia

assassin.png

As you awaken, the first thing you notice is Assassin fiddling around with various tools she seems to have made herself. Once she notices you though, she sets them aside. "Good afternoon, Master. I hope you slept well." After a brief delay, Assassin's expression changes. She seems quite pleased with herself. "While you were asleep, I was able to identify three other Masters. I've pinpointed the location of Saber and his Master, for one. I was also able to locate Rider's Master, but I'm unsure where exactly they've established a base; only the general area. There is also a Servant and Master in an abandoned factory south of here, but I couldn't identify them. I believe the Servant may be Caster, but don't want to act on assumptions alone."

Assassin even presents you with a map of where she scouted out. It's laid out on a scroll and it seems she used some sort of ink brush instead of a pen, but since she marked the pagoda you're hiding out in, it's pretty easy to make out what's where. The map contains rough details on everything within the city's wall, and some points of interest outside of it too, like the factory she mentioned. "Whenever you're ready to get to work on eliminating one of them, simply say the word."

@Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd

berserker.png

"Morning..." As you wake up, you hear Berserker's voice fill your mind. Seems she switched back into spirit form while you were asleep to conserve mana. "The meeting. Don't forget. Soon." The feeling of thinking about her next words passes through your head for a moment. "We'll have company."

You and Caster head out, gathering the makings of enough meals for five people, at Caster's insistence. Once you're back at base, Caster takes up the role of setting everything up while you do the cooking.

"Understood. I'll alert you the next time I see them." The two of you go out to do some grocery shopping at the harbor district and a nearby gas station. "Hey Archer...," I ask as we wait for the pizza. "You're familiar with leading groups of less than moral people. Do you have any advice? I really don't want this to backfire,"

>After we get the pizza, we head to Hifumi's place. As I enter, I grin widely.

"Pizza time," I smile as I place the pizza on his desk. "So...," I pause before I go fishing for info. "These familiars you got are really cool,"

You and Archer arrive at a pizza parlor after a bit of walking. You put in an order for a large pineapple pizza, and while waiting, you ask Archer for any advice about the situation you've found yourself in.

archer.png

"Make the people love and respect you, obviously. I'm not just talking about our Wild Hound friends, either. I'm talking the other gangs. I'm talking the average joes like the guys back there making our pizza. How you go about making everyone love you's your own business, but respect? That's an easy one. People respect power, and they respect what they're afraid of. So we earn that power and fear however we've gotta. The stacks of cash we got gambling last night should be pretty helpful, too."

"Uh, your pizza's ready, sir."

"Let's get going, Master. We gotta see a man about a dog."

Pizza in tow, the two of you make your way back to the slums, and into Wild Hounds territory. You go to Hifumi's house, enter, and find the boy alone save for a couple dogs. No sign of the massive dog from yesterday. He's looking at the map of the slums he drew up last night, at least until you announce yourself with pizza. And especially until you mention his familiars.

"Oh, these guys?" One of the dogs sniffs the pizza box as he takes a seat, taking quite a bit of pride in the compliment. "They're all good boys and girls. Summoning familiars isn't really what ma & pa wanted me to study, but it's what I was passionate about. I'd offer to teach you a thing or two, but it doesn't look like you need any more familiars besides that Servant following you around." A sly grin split his face, as he looked from you over to Archer.

"Alpha told me all about you, Servant. She could smell the magic making you up from the moment you walked in here. I guess since we seem to know so much about each other, I should do some clarifying." Hifumi got up, picking up a slice of pizza from the box as he returned to his whiteboard map. Pointing the tip of the pizza at the Zero Clan's territory, Hifumi started between bits, "The Zero Clan boss is a necromancer. She set up her turf near an abandoned house because of the graveyard surrounding it. I'm not sure how many bodies she can move at once, but she's got plenty of them to work with just across the wall. Meanwhile in Thunderhead territory, my sister's magic is all about lightning. It's what our family does, and she's really good at it. But she really hates mages. If she finds out there's a Holy Grail War afoot, she'll probably get a lot more territorial and focus on sniffing out any mages in her area, so we don't have to worry about her encroaching on my territory."

Giving one of his dogs a scratch behind the ears, Hifumi concluded "And then there's these beauties. These dogs are my eyes and ears, and they can sniff out magic, too. You'd be surprised how many mages are hiding around this city!" The dog gave a bark of agreement. "With all that laid down on you, is there anything you'd like to fill me in on with this Holy Grail War you're having?"

Stubbornly insist that Caster eats too. Everyone should eat, it’s a good way to build camaraderie.

Prepare simple meal of assorted sandwiches and sodas, plus a bottle of champagne for a toast.

I order significantly less spicy ramen then my servant and nod. "More than likely. So, how's about we go do a little investigating?"

Once we're done with our ramen, I'll go to the bank and begin to investigate it.

I nod, listening to Hifumi. "Nercomancy, huh? That's a rare field of study...," I sit down, absorbing all the other info. "So, yeah, now that you placed everything on the table, I mighta well do the same. I wanna win this Holy Grail War, and I think we both know that the average mage doesn't even think about the average man on the streets. So I wanna get an information network to help me watch the other Masters, so I know who is where, and see if I can't work it all to my advantage," I think to myself. "I made alliances with two other Masters, I'll be sure to pass you their pictures when I get them," I jab my thumb at Archer. "My partner here was one of the guys in the casino last night, honestly, that's how we got the money for this down payment," I shrug. "That's about all I got for now. I'm curious about this other guy you mentioned in your texts though. Maybe someone else is trying what I'm trying to do,"

"Stay hidden? Easy request." Your Servant dematerializes, returning to their spirit form to avoid being seen. "Other Servants will still be able to detect me if they're nearby, but this is about as hidden as it gets otherwise. Let's get back to work then, Master."

"It's namely to make sure none of them get an immediate notice of you that way. Detecting is another thing, but I would believe they can't exactly pinpoint a specific area. But then again, I've been wrong about that stuff before."

I nod my head and depart the building "Let's get back up this wall and scout again" I hope to find some clues as to where Berserker might be.

"Wait, what, really? Uh oh, that doesn't sound good. Unless...they decide to be friends too?" I brighten up. "Actually, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe we can all be friends, and work together against the Ultimate Final Boss, the Demon Lord Archfiend...or something like that." I chuckle. "I know that's probably not what's going on here, but still, it sounds nice." I smile.

"So..." I trail off, "These strangers. Do you think we should do anything? Like, if they're not very friendly, maybe...we should prepare? Not sure how we'd do that though." I shrug.

"No need to purchase anything for me. Servants do not require nutrition." After picking up some food for yourself and the cat, you return home, eat, and double check a few things. All the while, Saber's been monitoring the graveyard around your newfound base, watching and waiting for the return of your mystery graverobber.

"I'm pleased you feel that way! You'd be amazed what droll and boring sorts of mages often end up in these Holy Grail Wars." You lay out some food, plus some champagne, and now it's merely a matter of waiting for teams Archer and Berserker to show up. In the meantime...

"Say, if and when we do claim the Holy Grail for ourselves, what sort of wish might you end up making? You can tell a lot about a person by what they'd want from an omnipotent wish-granting device, so I'm interested to see what you have in mind."

With the food eaten and paid for, you and Assassin head to the bank in question. And unlike the warehouse from last night, the bank is not blocked off by police. It probably would have been too inconvenient to be worth it. Assassin's already on the case, looking around for anything off. And quite frankly, the only thing off about the scene of the crime is how much everything is not off. If the news hadn't said so, you'd probably never suspect this place was robbed in the first place, although the tellers do seem a bit nervous when dealing with customers today. Must be due to the lower amounts of money stored away.

What really catches Assassin's eye though, is the hourly schedule of the bank. Something she points out to you. Looking at it, the bank should have been closed before the warehouse explosion last night, let alone a bank robbery that used it as a distraction.

"Don't really know much about him; only what he looks like. He's a pretty tall guy. Brown hair, yellow eyes, this weird beard that's kinda like..." To describe what he was trying to get at, Hifumi put a finger on each end of his chin, then moved them down a bit. "Like that. Apparently he was having the time of his life beating everyone else at dice and cards, unlike you and your slot machine adventures."

You and Rider head back to the island. It isn't long before you finish up the preparations you'd started the night before with a bit of Servant assistance, and the place is now a suitable arena to drag foes into.

"Not too shabby. If we can lure them onto this island, killing them off should be a cakewalk."

You and Lancer go back up onto the wall. The view is even better during the daytime. That also means it's even easier to scout out the enemy.

lancer.png

"Hard to tell which one's gonna be Berserker at a glance, but..." Lancer scopes out the city from atop his new vantage point. He looks long and hard at anyone he catches sight of, but eventually...

"Gah. Trying to pinpoint Servants when I can see them better than I can sense them is a task indeed. I can see a man off the coast who looks rather out of place, but that's the best I've got for you from up here." He continues further along the wall, before suddenly stopping, just above a local graveyard. "Hold it. I'm definitely detecting a Servant down there. Can't see anyone though."

"Unknown." Berserker squints her eyes. It's hard to tell if she's thinking intently about that situation, or staring really hard at a nearby building that is incredibly not suspicious. However, even if it takes a bit, she does come to a conclusion. "How to prepare. We fight them. We kill them."
