“If we aren’t the ones getting the drop on them, they’re getting the drop on us. They cleared up the zombie hoards, and it’s not really an ambush if they choose to pursue Caster. It means they had every intention of attacking us, anyway. Making another friend doesn’t seem mathematically viable, as a team of 3 is about the max that you can make work efficiently.”

"Not like I imagine he'd be willing to part with any of his money so easily.  If he's this rich though, he might have his own way of getting information. So maybe he'll know something, or know how to know something about our mysterious bomber thief."

I talk to the golem as much as to Berserker and her master.

"It seems there's another servant out here fighting zombies. Caster isn't sure why he couldn't detect them, as they don't appear to be an assassin... And someone like that seems like a major concern. If Caster can pull this servant away, can Berserker get the drop on them? Possibly Archer as well."

"What do you know, Berserker?" I ask, then turn to the others, specifically Caster. "Meatshield...what a sad word. I don't think I like that word or what it implies. Which means I don't think I want to do it that way, either." I then turn to his Master. "And wait, what?! Are you suggesting we ambush that person? Who's not even attacking us? Also, what if, after attacking them, we get attacked ourselves? By the evil zombie horde?!"

"Can one of you explain to us what the hell is going on up there?"

I answer as well. "Uhh...it's a long story?" I chuckle with some embarrassment. "I guess we went out of range or something. And there's a person here with a Servant who's getting attacked by zombies..." I trail off, hesitating, before speaking again. "What about helping them out? Maybe we can make another friend."

"Don't," Berserker agreed. "Losing... battle."

Should I fall back then, Master?

"Doesn't sound like a servant or master to me. Not all too worried, looks like won't get any actual important information here."

Once I hear the man out I'll ask where to find good tofu around here and then head there.

"I got nothin' on theories. All I know for sure is that kid's bad news. The way he carries himself, his relationship with the priest, it all doesn't add up. Whatever they're up to over there, I'd wager they're in cahoots with each other!"

You then ask about a good place to get some tofu. As it so happens, there's a place not far from the church that is recommended. You find yourself only a couple blocks away from the church, in a place called Matou Tofu. Upon entering, you notice two customers, one of whom Saber immediately recognizes, and the other of whom seems to immediately recognize Saber.

saber.pngRuler.png

Master. That blue-haired boy appears to be a Servant. As for his companion...

His companion was a young man in a priest's clothes, red in the face and head on the counter except to guzzle down glasses of water.

"Are you an idiot? Why would you eat that?"

"I wanted to try it at least once," the priest gasps between chugs of water. Once he seemed to have come back down to earth from whatever it was he had been up to, he turns in his seat, obviously slapping composure together rather hastily in your presence. The priest smiles. "Here for the tofu, I presume?"

"Of course they are. It's on the sign and everything."

Another servant? Interesting. We best make use of the alliances we have formed, can you get in contact with Saber and his master? I hope they'll forgive us for interrupting their leisurely shopping trip. In the meantime I'll hole up in here, hide a little further into this building and I'll set a detection trap at the front door in case any movement is detected.

I can't get in touch without leaving you exposed to an enemy Servant. It seems unwise, but if you're willing to take the risk, I can go get him.

"Men of wealth do tend to have connections," Assassin mused. "Information may be our best bet, unless something else strikes your mind at the last minute." As the elevator ascends to the top floor, you and Assassin step forth, show the card to the men by a pair of doors, and step into the room beyond. It appears to be an office of some sort, and across it is a desk at which sat a young man hard at work with a glass chess set.

Didn't we see him at the park earlier?

Lando.png

"We're just letting anyone up here nowadays, aren't we?" he sighs. The man glances between the two of you, as if eyeing you up. But, as it turns out, he was really just waiting for you to voice the reason for your visit and wasn't exactly a patient man. Gesturing at the chairs opposite him, the man said "Well, go on, take a seat! You're already here now. Whatever you want must be pretty important for you to get sent all the way up here. So, what is it? And for that matter, who let you in?"

I'll sit down from across from him, smiling saying, "well, I was sent up here by a man named Boris. And well,  you're right about them just letting anyone up here. But since I'm here might as well make the most of it right?" Thinking for a moment I'll say, "well, see, my friend and I here are something like independent investigators. We like looking into all kinds of crimes, curiosities maybe even paranormal stuff if the mood strikes us. You fall more into the curiosity group, though that's not why I was looking around the park earlier. I'm looking for a criminal, maybe two who knows how many there are, and was wondering if I could get your help."

"I like the sound of that. So, here's the plan..."

As you and Rider discuss the course of action he had in mind, you stroll about the streets of Little Vegas, in a mostly southward direction. The bright lights, as well as the occasional sight of someone dragging themselves out of a casino, clearly expecting to win it big but having wound up spending all their money, seems to be a recurring theme around here. If only you didn't have to hand over your winnings earlier, you probably could have bought a few souvenirs. As you got out of there and approached the large wall separating the inner and outer city, Rider nodded as he wrapped up his explanation.

"Course, that's not a small job. I can set everything up myself, but it won't go easy on your mana if we really want to make sure the other Masters can't not investigate."

"If you need my mana, take what you need. Aside from just general conversation, being a source of mana to a Servant is one thing we Masters can really offer. If and when all this works out, that'll be one less pair in the running for the Grail."

Officiator's Announcements: I'll be scooting the timeline forward to night time in my next post. Take this time to wrap up whatever's going on in your part of town right now, and converse with me as necessary.

Another glass of water down. The officiator seems to have finally washed down all of whatever was such an assault on his throat. "They sure are. Keeping things lowkey is nice, but after looking at some old records, I'll be honest, it's a bit disappointing." With a shrug, the officiator comments "Not sure what I can really do about that though. Enjoy the food and order the spicy mapo tofu at your own risk."

After putting in an order and making your way back home, you're greeted by Lancer...

"I see, I see..." The man picks up a phone off his desk, dialing in a few numbers. "Hey. Send Boris up here. Now. When I'm done speaking with my guest here, I need a word with him."

He then turns his attention back to you and your request. "That's not a bad change of pace. People who come up here usually want money or favors. I wanted to be a detective when I was young, you know, but life has a way of giving you new plans when you least expect it. I need to know what it is you're investigating, though. If it's about that warehouse explosion last night, whoever's behind it was pretty good about covering up their tracks and getting rid of any evidence. Perhaps even getting rid of witnesses."

Understood, Master. Without anything further in the way of acknowledgement or interaction with the other Servant he'd noticed, Caster simply went back in the direction he'd come from, inspecting the wall rather closely on his way out of the graveyard. Once reunited with the rest of the group, Caster mused "This wall truly is something. Whilst over there, I couldn't detect Berserker despite being so close, and now that I'm on this side again, I can't get a lead on where our mystery Servant may be. If we have time later, I would quite like to collect and break down some samples to see what makes this thing tick. But let's save the curious mind's ramblings for later."

Turning his attention to Berserker's Master, Caster nods affirmatively. "What my Master says is true. People will die, and it will be quite difficult to avoid partaking in the bloodshed yourself, or at least to keep your Servant out of such affairs. If you're of the soft-hearted type, my only advice is to harden up and be ready to take the lives of others." He eyed over Berserker in particular for a moment in a brief pause. A pause that only lasted a few seconds, before he added "Of course, if you're truly that averse to bloodshed, I might have an idea that keeps you well away from combat. Nothing solid yet, though."

Looks like we won't have to. Our guest is leaving on his own. Weird. Now that he's out of here, I seem to have lost track of him once he passed that wall.

It isn't all too much later that @LordCowCow and Saber make a return, complete with some food for Felix, some takeout for Lancer, and a look of curiosity on Saber's face. "Lancer," the armored man nodded.

"Saber. You've just missed it. A Servant came by here, just scoping the place out. Didn't even say hello before he left."

"Class?"

"How should I know? The fact that I noticed he was a Servant right away tells me he's not Assassin, at least. And he's obviously not Saber or Lancer. You know how the Throne of Heroes can be sometimes. Classes just don't make sense with some heroes."

"Speaking of Servants, we encountered one while we were out shopping. It seems the officiator has gone and conjured what I can only assume is a Ruler-class Servant for his own use."

"That kid with the mask, right? We met him this morning, in fact. Well, since they're a neutral party, we don't have to worry about them. For now, let's eat and map out a plan to actually win this thing! Sound good, Masters?"

Anyway, we're looking for the warehouse bomb guy, yeah. I don't know how much looking into the explosion itself will help, but we're trying to find out anything we can about them. The only other thing we've figured out so far is that on the same night a bank was robbed around the same time. Though, it was already closed so I doubt there were much of any witnesses. "Loose lead," the man ponders, setting down the phone. "Let's see... there was that, I believe. I have it on good authority that the men behind that robbery are moving some valuable cargo tonight. Packing it all up in the industrial district late at night, then taking it to the harbor to be shipped overseas. If you were to throw a wrench in their plans, that might be a good place to do it. Night 2

Remaining Masters: 7

@Chaos Sonic

rider.png

"That ought to do it!" Rider proudly proclaimed. The last several hours had been spent setting up for the big move the two of you had planned, and while it was certainly a taxing process on your mana, it seemed that the preparations were just about finished. Gesturing broadly across the harbor district, Rider said "Take in the sights while we're here, Master. Once you pull the trigger, we're probably not getting any rest. On your command, we'll get this show started.

@Skaia

assassin.png

"Something seems wrong." With the sun down and the night well and truly having set in, Assassin took this time to voice her concerns, looking over her map of the city again. She had added a circle around the part of town you encountered Rider, with a question mark since there was still no certainty if that was his area of operations. "Not just with the other Servants and where they're located. I've been thinking about that man we met earlier today. He seems to be not only knowledgable about whatever criminals we're dealing with, but he has no problem sending us right to them. It just doesn't add up. That said, if we're going to catch that caravan he mentioned, we should get moving."

@Saikazo@Just Blake@Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd

archer.pngcaster.pngberserker.png

"And that concludes my report!"

"So to summarize, you encountered a Lancer-class Servant in an old shack in the graveyard, and something's up with the wall around the inner city. I guess we know who lives there now. That's the house I got caught in earlier, that cost my Master a Command Seal. His Master specializes in some kind of binding traps, and they're a pain in the ass to work around since I can't see them."

"You can't see them, dear Archer. For a Caster-class Servant like myself, dealing with a human's magecraft should be quite simple. Between myself, you and your guns, and Berserker to serve as a frontline, I dare say we're all but unstoppable as a team! With a bit of time to prepare, I should be ready to lead the way to that base and sap the enemy Master's traps within a matter of minutes."

During this exchange, Berserker seems more focused on Caster, until the mention of an enemy Master at least. "False..."

@LordCowCow@Tormented

saber.pnglancer.png

"...and that's my analysis," Lancer finished. "I'm not sure what to do in a situation where it's just myself and Saber left, but wars aren't won in one fell swoop, and this is hardly an exception. It's one battle at a time that gives you leverage and lets you win through sheer momentum. Anyone who says they've got the entire thing planned out is only fooling themselves."

"Your thorough input is appreciated, Lancer. All that's left is to see what our Masters make of it."

"There's obviously the case where something goes wrong, which will probably happen. But that's what I make of the current situation."

The cat contributes to the converation with an elongated meow.

"Rest assured, if I am to defend this building, that won't easily go wrong. And if it does, I'll take all the bastards down with this very house if I must."

"Now that's commitment! Can't say I approve of scorching your own to-be-conquered land, though."

"Well you're not wrong about that. He didn't really have any problem with complete strangers coming and asking him for help about solving a crime, which by itself seemed pretty bizarre. And even if he seemed concern for us it'd probably make more sense for him to not tell us. Which means one of three things probably. Firstly, he's working with them and this is a trap. Two, he has no vested interest in either party's survival. Or three, he wants someone to take care of them but can't himself for whatever reason. Regardless, this is about as close as we're going to get to a lead, so let's check it out anyway. If it's a trap, I have the utmost confidence in my Assassin to sniff it out and take it out."

We'll begin our stakeout/search.

"I'll be back, just need to check on some things," with that, I leave the meeting, headed to a more populated place so I could hail a cab. As I did, I checked my phone to see if I had new messages.

"My pleasure! We'd best stand back a bit." You and Rider put some distance between yourselves and the harbor district, hijacking another boat and cruising a short distance offshore. Rider pulls a flintlock pistol from his hip, and aims it carefully at a powder keg situated at the close end of the docks. He fires, prompting the keg to explode and ignite a trail of powder leading to another keg. Another. Another. It spreads to multiple kegs set up outside of buildings that stand carefully-measured distances from each other. The blazing powder trail goes inside of the buildings, and then...

TiredInferiorHypsilophodon-size_restrict

The entire harbor district goes up in flames and explosions. Every building, every docked boat, all go up in a fiery blaze in no time flat, sparing only the boat Rider had just stolen. All the while, Rider kicks back in his seat and watches the fireworks.

"Not something I would do while I was alive, of course."

"With your form of magecraft, and being best able to supply a Servant with mana from nearby, the best location should be--"

BOOM!

"Something's afoot," Saber observed, turning his attention in the direction of the burning harbor district. "It looks like whoever was behind this took out the entire area. We're looking at either a large criminal organization, or an enemy Servant. Orders?"

"Understood, Master! If it's a trap, I'll disarm it with flawless execution!" With quite the morale boost, Assassin leads the way to the point you were told to check out tonight. The pair of you were nearly there, when the sound of several great explosions booms from behind. "Just a moment, Master!" Assassin jumps up onto the rooftops, climbing higher and finally stopping her climb on a smokestack atop an old factory. From up there, she delivers her report.

Master. We need to avoid this specific building I'm standing on. From up here, I can see the truck those criminals are loading, and just as you suspected, it's a trap. The man that gave us that information is there, in the company of what looks like several golems and a few of his own men, but I can't tell what the golems are made of from up here. Some sort of crystal? That sound we heard was indeed explosions, and somebody has blown up the entire harbor district of the city. Everything else we've been told about these criminals seems to be true, so it couldn't have been them. I suspect Rider.

Finally, this building I'm on top of. This is the most dangerous part. I'm detecting no less than three Servants inside. I'm getting away from the building now; it's very likely Caster is in here, and I don't want to risk being detected. Without a moment to waste, and in even more of a hurry than when she was climbing the building, Assassin hurries back down the old factory, returning to your side a couple blocks away.

"We just can't catch a break, can we?" she sighs. "Since we're already here, should we deal with those criminals? It doesn't look like they'll be shipping their goods like they planned, though, so I suppose their plans have already been thwarted."

I let off a smile and a small laugh "Now this is more like it, strategy! I think the plans outlined are more than sufficient, I wonder if there's a way we can perhaps draw someone here as a means to catch them off guard. A particularly strong source of magic perhaps?"

"That could wo--"

BOOM!

"...looks like we won't have to go looking for trouble after all," Lancer chuckles. "If anything, it looks like we're the ones being drawn to them. While I think we should check out that explosion, I'm going to advise we be careful doing it. We don't know anything about the other Servants, and this could be an ambush of some sort."

I nod, listening to the report Archer and Caster had for us. "We are a pretty good team," I say as I rub my chin. "I think we should attack Lancer soon, but first, I need to make sure this plan will work," I stand up. "I'll be back, just need to check on some things," with that, I leave the meeting, headed to a more populated place so I could hail a cab. As I did, I checked my phone to see if I had new messages.

I don't say much throughout the meeting, not even replying to Berserker's vague comment. "Ah...all right then. Cool," I say with a nod.

I inquire Berserker about what she thinks is false. If she has any info beyond what we have, it's important to plan around what we know.

"I'll be going with my Master. Don't do anything stupid without us." As Archer and his Master depart, the former grabbing one of the little "phone golems" on the way out, Berserker listens to the inquiries presented to her.

"Lots. Caster..."

"Mm? Me? Ah, could you be referring to that? Of course it's fake. If it wasn't, things would be quite different. That suspicious staring does make me a touch uncomfortable though, I must admit." Caster pauses for a bit. "Surely I'm not the only thing on your mind? I know that even at a low ranking, Madness Enhancement can make rational thought a bit difficult, but there must be more."

"Lancer. Not him."

"Really? Fascinating." And very unhelpful. Blasted Madness Enhancement! "So we have someone besides Lancer on our hands?"

"Yes."

"Hmm... did you hear that, Master of Archer?" Caster asks into the other "phone golem" with a raised voice to make sure it reaches. "We might not be fighting Lancer after all! It may well be someone else." Then, within the factory, the sounds of several far-off explosions could be heard. "Hm? Sounds like someone's set up quite the fireworks display somewhere in town."

Meanwhile, in the cab...

"We might not be fighting Lancer after all! It may well be someone else."

"Not Lancer, he says." Fingers pressed against the bridge of his nose, Archer commented "I really can't stand that guy." As you check your phone for new messages, you find Hifumi has sent a few new text messages over the course of today.

1:07PM: still not sure where that tall guy is holed up, but my dogs keep spotting him around little vegas. guess someone likes the high life.

3:08PM: so cordula just came to my door asking about you. she said she's in.

3:10PM: just a thought, but you're not planning to try and settle a deal with my sister too, are you? if you're trying that, best I can say is good luck. that chick's crazy, and hates mages with a passion.

5:55PM: i found that tall guy again. he's doing something at the harbor district. something big, byt he looks of it.

6:54PM: dogs have sniffed out seven different magics like your servant's. looks like a few different people in this thing are in cahoots with each other.

8:19PM: wait, aren't there only supposed to be seven masters? then why did I find an eighth servant earlier?

Not long after you tell the cab where to go and they start driving do you see a bright light out by the ocean. Followed immediately by the booming sound of several large-scale explosions. It's only a few seconds later that your phone buzzes again, with another text message.

that wasn't you, was it?

"My pleasure! We'd best stand back a bit." You and Rider put some distance between yourselves and the harbor district, hijacking another boat and cruising a short distance offshore. Rider pulls a flintlock pistol from his hip, and aims it carefully at a powder keg situated at the close end of the docks. He fires, prompting the keg to explode and ignite a trail of powder leading to another keg. Another. Another. It spreads to multiple kegs set up outside of buildings that stand carefully-measured distances from each other. The blazing powder trail goes inside of the buildings, and then...

"...Jesus H. Christ, Rider..."
>Quite surprised that the entire harbor district went up in the explosion...talk about fire power!
"Regardless...be prepared. The...fun, you'd probably call it, is just about to start, I suspect."
>Prepares myself for the soon upcoming bout
