Yu-Gi-Oh! Horizon [IC/Not Accepting/PG-16]

Leila nodded in agreement with Hana, parroting, "stealing is bad," as if trying to internalize the lesson herself. As Peter and Makoto looked at her, questioning if she walked all the way over here, the girl thought about it for a moment. Looking up, trying to recall how she got here Leila said, "I don't remember doing anything other than walking to get here. So I think I walked all the way here." Looking to Makoto her defeated look returned again as she said, "I...get lost. A lot."

Looking back to Peter's phone, the girl firstly seemed to be amazed at the map she was being shown. However, her expression seemed more confused and saddened as she realized she didn't recognize any of the surrounding names. "Maps are confusing," the girl stated. After not getting anywhere just looking at it, the girl stepped back and thought about it more. Then, after remembering something she just said, "stealing is bad. So, I should finish shopping first." The girl nodded to herself as if she had found the answer to her troubles, temporary though they may be.

"You two are silly. What's so surprising about walking? That's what feet and legs are for after all." Hana said, patting her thighs as if she had to explain what she meant.

"I...get lost. A lot."

"Well have I got a tip for you! Never worry about where you're going and you'll never be lost a day in your life!" Hana was proud of this particular advice. It worked for her so far. After all she didn't know where she was and she found this place right? It seemed to have left her memory that it was the others who actually located the store. To her all that mattered was that she made it there.

"stealing is bad. So, I should finish shopping first."

Hana hit her open palm with a fist and nodded. "Okay gang. We have our mission. We will help the noodle queen with finding her way after we have finished our own shopping." She pointed at the girl "Don't leave without us! We will be the shepherds to your sheep. The...the butter to your toast. No, wait....I lost it. Well whatever just wait for us mkay?"

She then grabbed her carts again. "Let's go team. We still have plenty to pick up. Double time!" Hana would then attempt to get them to get the rest faster than they had been. Which was made slightly more difficult as she tended to grab armfuls of everything that was on the list. Grabbing things left and right without hesitating to even count what she was taking.

Every time she got within sight of the ham that was on sale she'd give it a side-eye and, the second they got close to it, she tried to grab one whole ham and sneak it into the cart along with everything else.

Just so he had it all squared up (Peter thought to himself as he rubbed his temples, guiding the team cart around the store with his elbows), Leila had, somehow, without noticing or getting tired, walked all the way from Ocean’s Coast to Pegasus Market -- this specific Pegasus Market, one at least four hours away -- and now shifted constantly between lamentations at being lost, and, at Hana’s encouragement, focus on her immediate task at hand.

Well, one of those was doomed to run out more quickly than the other; even if everyone just stood around in the Asian aisle and made small talk, they had obligations to a club of their own and at least one person who knew how to use a maps app. But Hana had gotten ahead of all that, insisting that they leave as a collective four-person unit, a sentiment that, like, Peter totally would have said if Hana hadn’t done something about it first (right?). It still meant they had to split up for the moment. Hopefully, Peter thought, Leila didn’t get lost in the store.

The only other big event of the trip was how Peter had to guide Hana’s away from a mass of ham that could only lead to trouble. “Very, very sure that’s not on the list,” Peter said every time she eyed it, though even then he had to reach out and slap Hana’s hand away at least once. “How were you planning to pay for your cart anyway?“ Peter said. “This one's all club stuff.“

“Huh? Both of them are for the club,” Hana said. “Didn't that teacher give us something to pay for it all?“

Peter gestured to his cart. “Coach Clara gave us money for this,” he said, before making a wider gesture to include both of them. “She didn’t give us money for this. And you said you left your money at home so…” A realization hit Peter like a load of bricks, but it was the kind of realization that he just sort of resigned himself to. His parents didn’t give him, like, a ton of money, especially not in the form of a debit card or anything like that, but they had put some on his student ID quote, “for emergencies.”

Peter sighed. “Okay,” he said. He just hoped the store accepted it.

The cashier did, thankfully, take his card and run it through. It was just like any other card, it seemed, though Peter was acutely aware of just how much Hana had loaded onto the checkout counter, even without looking at (or hearing) the final total. He also wondered if his parents could check the balance remotely and if they’d wonder why he spent so much when he was ostensibly supposed to be at the club.

It was a problem for Future Peter, not that Present Peter didn’t have his own problems. Like how they had to wait with their noodles and drinks (and lack of ham, “Small victories,” Peter thought to himself) near the front of the store, waiting for their newfound fourth.

“You’re okay with this, Makoto?” Peter said, mostly out of passing the time. “It just kind of happened I guess without anyone asking.“ Then, to nobody in particular, remembering a previous thought, he said, “You think she’s okay in there?“

“Two-hundred-eighty-eight,” Avi corrected quietly, glancing up at the ceiling as he mulled over Charlie’s challenge. A duel to showcase what the captains were capable of to the noobies. It wasn’t a bad idea, if he was being honest, but he wasn’t really sure if the kids would actually learn anything from it. He didn’t see what it would hurt either though. Plus the pipsqueak seemed absolutely thrilled with the idea. “Sure. We can duel,” he finally said. “Not like there’s much else for us to do today.”

He pushed off the wall and pulled his deck out of the box on his waist, slotting it into the duel disk that suddenly unfurled on his right arm. “Been making some changes to my deck anyways. Dug up some old Toon cards I saw watching some professional duels from way back, so probably a decent time for me to test them out. You ready?”

"I don't remember doing anything other than walking to get here. So I think I walked all the way here. I...get lost. A lot."

"Okay gang. We have our mission. We will help the noodle queen with finding her way after we have finished our own shopping. Don't leave without us! We will be the shepherds to your sheep. The...the butter to your toast. No, wait....I lost it. Well whatever just wait for us mkay?"

"The slide to your noodles!" Makoto added.

"Let's go team. We still have plenty to pick up. Double time!"

And pick things up they did! Makoto kept a close eye on the cart of club stuff. Anytime Hana added something to the cart, Makoto checked if it was on the list, and if not, she put it back. Whenever Peter didn't beat her to it, at least. Did Hana really think she'd be able to slip an entire ham past probably one of the sharpest minds in the duel team and also past Makoto? Because despite her admirable efforts, she couldn't. After a brief clarification on Peter's end about just how much of this was getting paid for, it was time for checkout. And honestly, Makoto was worried she might have to chip in on the extra stuff. It wasn't like she was dead broke, but Makoto certainly wasn't about to call herself loaded. The money in her pocket was to be spent wisely on things that would be super worth it.

She made a mental note that she'd have to get everyone - especially the club's girls - to thank Peter for his noble contribution.

“You’re okay with this, Makoto? It just kind of happened I guess without anyone asking.

Right. Leila had to be taken home. Otherwise she'd get lost. "You get used to it when you get sidetracked for errands a lot," Makoto shrugged. "Though I haven't really had any that lead me off on eight hours of walking. I guess the better question is if you two are okay with it! I'm a tough girl who can keep going and going if she has to! Are your legs up to that much walking?" There was also the question of Hana's legs. But knowing her from the short time since they'd met, Hana would probably go anyway, even if her legs were decidedly not up to the task.

Once the group from Horizon had paid for their food, Leila then went to go pay for her stuff. With bags in hand, the girl walked over to the others as they seemed to be discussing what to do next. Leila simply stood around and waited for them to finish what it was they were talking about, and upon realizing that they had indeed agreed to help find her her way back the girl gave a bright smile on her face. Giving a small bow, the girl said, "thank you." As the group exited the store, Leila took a look around the area and came to the conclusion yet again that she hadn't the faintest idea of where she actually was. All the same, with food in her bags and new friends at her side, Leila seemed fired up to begin moving through the city. Or as fired up as her generally unexpressive face would show.

As she began to walk down the side walk, seemingly taking the lead in spite of all prior conversations, she looked back to everyone else. "I think I walked this way before...I think..." The girl did not inspire much confidence.

Hana bounced on the balls of her feet as she watched the cashier ring up the two carts full of groceries. The look on the cashier's face was incredulous and she had started to go over how this kind of joke wasn't funny when Hana told Peter to take out the card and proudly announced "It's for our club!"

Though the cashier still looked uncertain they shrugged and went about scanning each item. The bags started to pile up. Five. Ten. Over twenty bags filled with groceries. The cashier looked to the bags. Then the three children. With another shrug and a look that clearly said "not my problem" they went on to the next in line.

Hana put her hand to her chin as she looked at the bags. Then she snapped her fingers. "I got it!"

The other two were left to their own devices, dealing with the customers who now had to go around their bag pile, for a few minutes. Then Hana came back. Pulling a flatbed cart behind her. She waved when she saw the three. "Heeeey, they let me have this!" Hana declared proudly.

Without explaining further she started to load the bags up on the cart. While they barely fit they did manage to make it work and Hana began to pull the thing behind her and out of the store. Where the girl was still waiting. "Noodle Czar! Hi!"

"I think I walked this way before...I think..."

"I think there; for I am." Hana said with a firm nod. "That means if you think something is there then it must be there. So that must be where your school is!" She concluded with a smirk and started to pull the cart along with in the direction that the girl indicated before anyone else could correct either of them. Completely oblivious to the stares they were getting as she strolled down the sidewalk with the bulky cart full of groceries.

It was a good thing Makoto was fine with it, Peter thought, though he started to get worried when she started talking about walking for hours on end. Was there some sort of discussion he missed where they agreed to set out on some eight-hour trek, trudging miles with bag after bag of groceries in their hands? Worse was when Hana wheeled around the corner with a cart that she’d got from… somewhere (Peter didn’t bother asking), which only served to confirm his worry. Plus, Leila had already started walking. “Hey, um, maybe not?” Peter said, trying to get a sense of things. He double-checked his phone and did some quick maths. “If we’re walking all the way to Ocean’s Coast and then all the way back to Horizon, we’re not going to get back until super late.

“Maybe we should take a cab or something? Like” -- Peter gestured to his phone -- “we can do more than just check maps with this. We can just call one up. Or the subway, that would work too. I bet you could manage that cart through a turnstile if you really tried hard enough.

Peter went back to his phone and did a little more digging. “The nearest subway station is, uh… a couple blocks that way?” It was more than a couple, but the white lie seemed harmless to people who had been willing to walk for hours. Peter wondered if he was supposed to blame the city for poor civic engineering or Pegasus Market for not picking a better location. “Maybe we start going that way and then if we see a taxi we think can take all this, we try and grab that?”

He was also acutely aware that it wasn’t like they were going to be able to spend the club budget on any of this travel, but Peter was in “in for a penny, in for a pound” mode now. One problem at a time, he told himself.

...yes, we could. They ARE phones, after all. Why did Makoto not think about that? A bit embarrassing, that.

“The nearest subway station is, uh… a couple blocks that way? Maybe we start going that way and then if we see a taxi we think can take all this, we try and grab that?”

"If it's only a couple blocks, we don't really need a taxi," Makoto countered, turning and starting in the appropriate direction. "We'll have to pay for the subway anyway, right? Paying for that and a taxi just seems wasteful and lazy!" Although she would have been fine with the long walk, taking a subway ride also sounded fun. And a lot less of a pain for her little legs. Some part of her didn't trust a train that ran underground, but oh well. Probably just her being used to having the big open sky above her.

While Leila was still unsure of whether or not she was walking in the right direction, Hana's encouragement had given her the confidence to know that she would definitely get home this way. As the girl resolutely started walking forward, she stopped in her tracks as Peter had told them to wait up. She thought about what he said, looking to the sky as if trying to figure out what time it would be when she finally made it back home. As he mentioned the subway the girl nodded. "Most of the time when I'm lost and Laurie finds me we take the subway back home. I don't think we ever take taxis though." The girl seemed to mull on it for a moment longer, before shaking her head.

With it decided that they would take the subway, the group's journey began with an actual destination. As it was rush hour at this time, the group would find the streets, sidewalks and subway station/platform itself crowded. However, they wouldn't have much trouble for quite like Moses to the Red Sea, the crowds parted as they were both in awe and general confusion at the flatbed cart packed with food being escorted by four high schoolers.

Ms. Breiner, who had been largely silent as she smiled with a video camera on her lap, simply said, "oooh, it's been awhile since I've seen you two duel," as Avi and Charlie seemed ready to duel. Seeming to be looking forward to it, the soon to be duel was interrupted as the door swung open.

A young girl poked her head through the door saying, "there you are. I've been looking every where for you. Listen there's a problem at the - oh, um." Noticing that there were other people in the room with the teacher, the girl said, "sorry for interrupting you all."

"Oh, don't worry about it Sarah," the teacher smiled at the girl and waved off whatever concerns she had. "In fact, we were just about to get started with a duel here, so if you wanted to watch I'm sure we'd be glad to have you."

"A duel? Right, that's why - well, anyway. No, no thank you. That's not what I'm here for anyway. There's a problem in the club room and I can't really handle it. Actually I'm at my wit's end with it."

Teacher cocked her head to the side. "What's the matter? Is something not working?"

"Not quite. It's just well...it's probably better to show you." She looked over to everyone else saying, "actually. If all of you could come along that would be great. I don't think this is a two person job."

Standing up from her chair, video camera still in her possession and still holding it up without pointing it to the ground, Ms. Breiner said, "sorry students. I know I was supposed to help watch over you all and your practice, but would you be able to help Sarah and I out?"

As if on cue, before anyone could answer, Charlie's phone would ring. Unbeknownst to everyone else it was a call from their job asking for help, as they were currently short staffed. Telling everyone something had come up once they were done with the call, Charlie would excuse themselves from the room and make their way past Sarah.

"The subway it is!" Hana declared. One arm up in the air and the other behind her and grabbing onto the cart she boldly made her way down the street. She noticed that the path was somehow opened up for her but she didn't connect the dots and realize that people were parting because of her. "Do you see? It's like the world itself is opening before us! There's another lesson for you all my underclassmen. You can do whatever as long as you just do it!"

Despite the looks they got, which Hana ignored, they would be able to reach the subway without much trouble. It was when they actually got to the subway when the trouble started. Subways were something that was underground. And, being underground, that meant to get there usually you'd have to go down something. Often stairs or an escalator. Both of which is not easy to navigate with a large cart full of grocery bags.

Plus the idea Hana had, "Okay let's all get on and ride it down!" was rejected so the girl wasn't sure what to do about the problem.

When they eventually managed their way down Hana looked around at the three with her fists on her hips. "Well, we've been through a lot together. But our battle isn't over. Our next opponent." She dramatically pointed towards the subway. "Is that! Do you have the mettle to ride this metal beast and fend off attackers who want to take our hard-fought supplies? I won't judge you if you want to retreat. But for those brave enough to fight, follow me!" She started pulling the cart around then stopped.

Hana glanced back and laughed "Aha....where are we going anyway?"

David would've been quite interested to see the captains Duel like this...unfortunately, this wasn't in the cards.

"A duel? Right, that's why - well, anyway. No, no thank you. That's not what I'm here for anyway. There's a problem in the club room and I can't really handle it. Actually I'm at my wit's end with it."
"What's the matter? Is something not working?"
"Not quite. It's just well...it's probably better to show you. Actually. If all of you could come along that would be great. I don't think this is a two person job."
"sorry students. I know I was supposed to help watch over you all and your practice, but would you be able to help Sarah and I out?"

The young man sighed, having that this was now the current predicament, as well as Charlie immediately getting a call and they were now saying something came up. Well, so much for seeing the captains duking it out against each other. He could've enjoyed seeing the two decks face on another and possibly find a way to beat one or the other by studying it. Alas, a different time...a different place...

"Nature never appeals to intelligence until habit and instinct are useless."

David shuffled his way to follow Sarah and Ms. Breiner, adjusting his glasses slightly. "Might I throw out possible thought?" he asked. "If the problem is mechanical or electronic related, have you already tried to turn things off and then back on again?"

"Most of the time when I'm lost and Laurie finds me we take the subway back home. I don't think we ever take taxis though."

Then the subway they would ride! People seemed to part for the four of them and their cart, giving the group odd looks. Hana was apparently missing the point on why that was. But once they made it to the station, the next problem became apparent. The stairs. Stairs and wheeled objects were not the best of combinations, as one bit of lost control over the cart could send it, its contents, and perhaps even the person holding it, careening down the stairs, and everything would get scattered all over the place.

"Okay let's all get on and ride it down!"

"Let's not," Makoto replied. She had a better idea. Putting herself at the front of the cart, Makoto grabbed hold and gave the cart a little upward nudge to check its weight. Heavier than she would have liked. Nodding to herself, she concluded "So basically, I'm gonna hang on to the front of the cart, and then we can ease it down the stairs one step at a time. Slowly. If I could get a second pair of hands over here, that'd be awesome. Any volunteers?"

The cart seemed like a Hana problem to Peter. Since getting it and putting all their groceries on it had been her problem, it made sense that this would be too. And it had been a problem that she’d taken care of impressively, actually, or at least her boundless optimism kept it from ever being a problem to her, which was impressive in itself to Peter anyway. Of course, when she suggested that they all ride down the escalator in it, then it became his problem too, and that was where he drew the line. Makoto suggesting carrying all those groceries down wasn’t better, either, though it was a step (heh) in the right direction.

An elevator, or something else to make the station wheelchair-accessible, was the most obvious solution, Peter thought, and he almost said as much before he realized that this wasn’t a station that had that for whatever reason. But it did have an escalator, which was like Makoto’s plan, except without involving the constant inching down and instead meant just standing there bearing the weight. “And I definitely can help with that,” Peter said, explaining his version of the plan to the group.

It was difficult, but Makoto had already valiantly volunteered to take the brunt of things by being in the front. Hana still had a vice-like grip on the actual handle of the thing, so that left Peter and Leila to squeeze to the sides of the escalator and hold onto it there. The escalator was on the longer side, sure, but they managed alright. The next problem, as Hana put it, was “Where are we going, exactly?”

“Well, the ticket machines, for starters,” Peter said. Leila said she’d ridden a subway before, but had either of the other two? “And we probably shouldn’t use the club money for this either so…” He sighed. Tickets, even round-trip ones like three of them were going to have to be, weren’t expensive to him, but the costs still added up.

He didn’t say as much, but he hoped that the way he said, “Please don’t lose these,” as he passed them out to everyone got the point across fine.

Then, as if he was still answering Hana’s question, the one she’d asked, like, several minutes ago, he said, “Next is the turnstiles. Hana, the cart’s your job, probably a bigger challenge than riding the train will be.” Something about a camel and an eye of a needle came to mind, but he wasn’t sure why. “After that, though, I mean, just don’t make eye contact with anyone unless you’re ready to start a conversation with them, and, I dunno, get off when I say to get off.”

Terry was elated to see the two Captains considering the duel; a grin forming on her face that would span ear-to-ear, even the substitute coach seemed excited! “I can’t wait to see-” she cut herself off, as another voice entered the room; who began to discuss something with the Substitute Coach, interrupting the duel before it had ever began. Frowning, Terry watched as the idea she had built up for her afternoon in mere moments fell apart; and the exciting duel she was going to watch was ripped away from her piece by piece.

As Charlie left, Terry couldn’t help but feel disappointed; almost drooping as the group was asked to help deal with another club’s issues; something that admittedly left a sour taste in her mouth, considering what it had interrupted. Taking in a deep breath, she cleared her throat; before taking another breath, to stall for more time to hype herself up. “We accept your challenge, Miss Teacher!” Terry announced, striking a pose as she threw her arms outwards, nodding as David gave his own thoughts. “And to add onto the Lord of Time’s thought-process, should it be a human issue, fear not! We, the Demon Kings of the Seventh Heaven will subdue the troublemakers before one can even blink!” She announced, followed by a clearly practiced laugh. “Unruly humans are NOTHING compared to our power!”

The group had managed to bring the cart down the stairs into the subway station. They were then met with their next obstacle - as Peter had mentioned - the turnstile. The group would find that it was indeed harder to get through this small gate then it was going through the eye of the needle. But they did it. Somehow. It was amazing and left everyone in the subway station in awe, so much so that no one seemed to stop them from getting on board. How they got it on the train too was something to behold as well. And so quite like the three magi bearing gifts, the three students had a large assortment of goods on their journey to return Leila to her home. Leila herself didn't seem to start any conversations but if she was asked anything she would answer without any difficulty.

Eventually though, the three wise duelists had gotten to the end of their train journey. With the train door opening up, Leila walked to the edge and jumped out and onto the platform. Sticking the landing, the girl looked back to everyone else with a somewhat proud expression on her face for her entirely mundane accomplishment. Leila looked around the station saying, "this looks familiar." The girl nodded to herself, before looking to everyone else. "We're here. School isn't that far away...I think..." Their trusty guide that was not Peter's phone didn't seem to sure about this, presumably how Peter's phone got the position in the first place.

"Leila!" Another girl's voice could be heard cut sharply through the ambient noise of the station. Were everyone to look, they'd see a girl who seemed to be a bit older then their escort mission girl though not by much, walking over to them.

"Laurie!" Leila's eyes lit up as she saw her friend. Stretching out her arms and going for a hug, the girl's walk was stopped as Laurie extended a hand out to push against Leila's head.

It was clear that Laurie was quite annoyed by the expression on her face as she said, "and just where were you this whole time?"

"I dunno. I was lost." Leila continued walking forward despite not making any progress.

"Yeah, I know. But you can at least tell me that and find out where you are yourself. You have a phone." Leila stopped in her tracks as she was scolded matter of factly. Laurie then seemed to realize there were others here and let out a sigh. "I take it you're the people who brought her back this time? I figured she'd come here if someone else was bringing her, so thanks for that. She can be a real handful some times." Laurie then raised an eyebrow at the cart they had in tow, but didn't comment before smiling with a much more friendly expression on her face. "Anyway, my name's Laurie. Pleasure to meet you all. Sorry if you had to come far for this little scamp's sake." The girl then gently pushed Leila's head back, before putting her hand directly on top of her head and started patting it. "The least I can do for you is pay for your train fair. I uh, don't know how to cover for that, though." The girl pointed to the cart.

Hana had full faith that the other two would find the way down the stairs with the cart and her trust seemed to be well placed! "You two should get a medal when we get back! Does our club do medals? Oh, I could make some! I bet I could figure out how its done!"

“After that, though, I mean, just don’t make eye contact with anyone unless you’re ready to start a conversation with them, and, I dunno, get off when I say to get off.”

From there Hana proceeded to look directly at every person in their near vicinity. Some of them, unlike Peter had said, seemed to grow uncomfortable by this and ignore them. But others seemed happy to speak with her! There was one who even got real close and was talking really loudly asking her what she was looking at. Who seemed to be dumbfounded as Hana took this literally and described everything she was seeing with a smile.

He was much less polite, though a fair bit more energetic, than the old lady who was telling Hana how she reminded her of one of her cats, who also happened to be called Anna (Hana didn't bother to correct her) and was such an excitable thing.

Hana didn't even realize they had reached their destination until the rest started to get off the train. She gave a wave to the old lady with a "Tell Anna I said hello!"

Soon they were met by yet another girl. The mysterious friend of Hana's new friend in fact. Who Hana greeted with a smile and an attempt to hug her, "Hello friend of friend! Don't worry, we were happy to help out the CEO of Noodles!"

“The... CE- alright.” The girl seemed confused by Hana but said, “well glad she didn’t cause you too much trouble then.” She then looked over to Leila, ruffled her hair, and said, “and looks like you got lucky meeting some nice people again.”

"It's not luck; it's destiny! What're the odds we both would be shopping in the same place at the same time!" Hana's smiling face grew thoughtful for a moment as what the girl had said before just sank in. "Oh! The bags are for our club! Very important supplies. Don't have to worry about that." She gave a firm nod.

The girl chuckled a bit and said, “I suppose so. But hm, that’s a lot of food for a club. Must be a lot of people there.” The girl shrugged with her free arm and said, “well I hope you didn’t miss too much of whatever your club was helping a certain club skipping girl out.” Her hand visibly tightened on Leilas head and the girl let out a small yelp as it did.

"Hehehe." Hana giggled as she moved over to try and grab both Makoto and Peter. "Yup, we're only half of the club!" She declared proudly. "Hopefully this is enough..." She looked back at the cart and frowned.

Sarah looked towards David as he made his comment. The girl's expression seemed impassive as she let out a clearly fake laugh saying, "ahaha, yeah, didn't try that one yet. Thanks." Before saying anything else, she looked towards the girl that spoke up with a look of bewilderment. Seemingly trying to parse what was just said, she looked towards Ms. Breiner who simply returned a joyful smile in response. Looking back to Terry, she stared at the girl for a moment longer before saying, "I don't think it's really a human problem, per se. Well, people definitely caused this but...well, if you're coming along then I'll show you when we get there."

With that, the group made their out of the gymnasium and into the studio room for the videography club. The room had seemed to be devoid of any other people, yet in spite of this it had certainly looked like a typhoon had passed through it. Tripods and cameras were lying on the ground, and there was a mess of wires all over the place. When the group entered a bit further they would see the culprit. Resting in the center of the chaos, as if trying to make a nest out of all of the equipment, was a badger. "Look, see!" Sarah pointed with great exasperation at the creature.

Ms. Breiner as well looked at it curiously saying, "oh my. How did that little fellow get there." It was not particularly small.

Sarah shrugged, bewilderment in her eyes saying, "heck if I know. I guess someone brought it here for a project or something - I don't know, and just left it in here. And then it got out." The girl pointed to a rather large cage under a desk that looked to be open.

"Why don't you ask one of the school's security staff to deal with it?"

"Do you really want to involve the rest of the school in this?"

"Hmm...good point."

Sarah looked over to the others saying, "so, uh yeah. That's how it is. Do either of you have any ideas to get it...well, either back in its cage or out of here or something." The badger looked up from its next, a clear glint of annoyance in its eyes towards the group, causing Sarah to back up with a yelp, hiding behind Terry.

At least it was finished! Geez, who knew carting three people and also an actual cart could be so…

Peter didn’t actually have a word to finish that sentence. “Frustrating,” was the closest, but, like, overall, he had done positively. Sure, Hana had done basically the exact opposite of what he’d wanted but that just drew all the attention to her, it didn’t actually increase any he received. And he didn’t even have to point out which stop was theirs, Leila recognized it for them and got off by herself. The turnstile on the way out was annoying, but at least there was an elevator this time, so getting back to ground-level just got the “why are there able-bodied kids taking the elevator” stares instead of the “what is going on with that cart on the escalator” stares.

In addition to all of that, it was good to know that someone else was as exasperated with some of Leila’s antics as she was. Laurie seemed pretty cool, actually, if she had to put up with all this more than once. “It really wasn’t any trouble,” Peter said, even though it was. Then he remembered her offer to compensate them for the trip and the food. “We got money for the food already, or, like, half of it, at least,” he said, giving Hana the side-eye. “And you don’t really need to pay back the tickets or anything. It wasn’t that much.”

He let his gaze soften and looked at Makoto as well. “Ready to head back? We’ve still got a big ride ahead of us and I bet they’re probably all missing us back at our club too. Wonder what nonsense has been going on since we left.”

After some effort at the subway station, namely in getting the cart down there and onto the train, the rest was fairly smooth sailing. Admittedly, Makoto would have preferred one that ran above ground level, but something about darting around under the earth's surface was also neat. Like ferrets! Or snakes. It was just a shame that she couldn't see the city whizzing by. All the same, however, once at the station, they were met with a girl named Laurie, who apparently was here to retrieve the wayward Leila.

All's well that ends well!

“Ready to head back? We’ve still got a big ride ahead of us and I bet they’re probably all missing us back at our club too. Wonder what nonsense has been going on since we left.”

"Ready!" Now that he'd mentioned it though, what had been going on over at their own club? Makoto wagered it was something wild. Like an alien invasion! ...maybe not that wild. Whatever it was, it was probably exciting all the same! "Whatever's going on over there isn't gonna see itself! Or something. Let's go, team!" Hopefully she didn't miss it. Or if she did, hopefully she could get the details out of somebody.

The subway ride back to Horizon Academy was significantly less troublesome than the first. The elevator was still there, for example, so getting down wasn’t an issue, they didn’t have to buy new tickets, thankfully, and the cart/turnstile problems got closer and closer to being completely solved with each pass -- this go-around was no exception. The only things that really stayed the same were the stares they got for waddling around with a shopping cart in the middle of a subway station, but that was more of a minor annoyance. Peter was used to stares.

On the subway proper, Hana went around again trying to make eye contact with whoever, and Peter would have tried to ignore her -- just like he had the first time -- but a question crept into the back of his mind, and quickly was at the forefront. Was it a worrying one? Maybe. It definitely required more thought, in any case, and, well, with the subway ride long ahead of them, he needed something to do with his hands.

So he took out his deck.

Fifty-two cards -- okay, fifty-four, including the jokers -- all the same on the back, but each one of them with a unique print on the front, ace to king in four different fonts. Sure, he could have shuffled around his Duel Monsters deck instead, but the sort of idle shuffling he was planning on doing was not ideal if he wanted to keep the condition of the cards pristine. He could hear his parents in his head now, “What happened here?” they said in unison. “These are bent, Peter, how’d you bend these so much?”

Not that they knew about the bicycle deck, of course. Or rather, they knew he had it, but they didn’t know he always had it. Or that he could fan it out and hold it across the aisle to someone -- Makoto, in this case -- and say, “Wanna pick a card?”

“Is this one of those magic tricks?” Makoto asked. Her enthusiasm seemed to shoot up, as she replied “Of course I'll pick a card. Let's go with... this one!” A card near the center, just a bit to the left. That was her card of choice.

“Alright, probably a good choice,” Peter said. He turned his head down the aisle. “Hana!” He had to say her name a few more times to get her attention away from the octogenarian she’d decided to strike up a conversation with, but eventually, she came back, whereupon Peter made the same offer.

“Oh, are you going to do a magic trick! Should I find a hat?” She looked around a bit for a proper hat before returning her gaze to Peter. “Right, right, sure”

“No hat needed,” Peter said. He set the deck in his lap and rubbed his temples in that showy way that meant he was deep in thought. He pointed at Makoto, then Hana. “Ace of clubs and… three of clubs.”

“Hmm… Nope!” Hana said, which was to be expected. “You’re still getting the hang of this, aren’t you?”

Makoto, meanwhile, let her mouth go agape and revealed her card to the whole train. “It is!” she said, “How did you do that!?”

If anyone was more surprised than her, it was Peter, who, with a “Wait, really?” lurched forward in his seat and sent the cards tumbling into the aisle between them. “Ah, uh, crap.” He scrambled to start gathering them but intentionally did a terrible job, more mixing them all together, flipping some of them over than actually gathering them. “Can you help me with this? Sorry, uh, yeah, I dunno.”

Between the three of them, they’d managed to get the remaining fifty-two cards back together, but now they were all mixed up, some cards facing one way, and some others the other way. Peter did a few bridge shuffles but didn’t bother flipping them back to face the same way. “I didn’t actually have a plan if I got it right,” Peter said. “I figured it just wouldn’t happen and I could just move on with the trick. I’d say something like, ‘Well, what is your card, then? You can tell me, I’ve seen this trick before.’” He took a breath. “So, Hana, what is your card?”

Hana flashed her Joker proudly. “This one! It’s fitting, isn’t it?”

Peter nodded. Of course it’d be the one he’d never guess, but, then again, he’d already been lucky once today. He fanned the cards back out. “Alright, next thing I’ll need you to do is put those cards back. I guess, like, we already did all that work putting these cards back together, might as well finish the job, right?”

Once that was done, Peter did a quick count, running through the cards like anyone would going through a stack, making sure that all the cards were indeed back in the deck, before setting the deck down -- next to him this time -- and looking back up at his audience. Now was the time, while he had them in rapt attention, to ask his question. “Hey, dumb question probably, but do you worry? About someone you know seeing you when you weren’t expecting them to?”

Hana went first. “Nah,” she said. “You know why? I don't expect anything to happen! If I went around worrying about things I don’t expect, I’d always worry.”

Makoto, too, shrugged and said, “Hmmm... not really. It's not like I've got anything to hide.”

“I don’t always worry,” Peter said, almost on instinct. “I just… I don’t know. When I’m out, I always feel like someone’s going to recognize me. That’s not normal?” It wasn’t, and he knew it, but he still felt like he had to ask. “I guess when I’m recognized, that means my parents might find out. And when my parents find out, if it’s not something they’ve expected of me, they start lecturing me. I don’t know. They’d probably look down on me even doing this bicycle card stuff.”

“Sounds rough.” Makoto frowned. “If my folks caught word I was up to something they didn't expect, they'd probably just ask me how it went. Your parents sound kinda stiff.”

“It’s not like I’d rather be doing this,” Peter said, “I’d rather be… okay, I don’t actually know what I want. I don’t know, sorry. Anyway,” He picked the deck back up. “You can take your cards back now,” he said, and fanned it out to reveal all the cards were now properly facing the same way. All of them but two, the ace of clubs and Hana’s joker.

“Wait when did you do that?” Hana asked, pointing at the cards. “You're not just a smart fish you're a MAGIC fish!”

Peter gave a sheepish smile. “Thanks for indulging me, I guess. That’s all I got.”

They only had a few more stops after that before they had to get off. Peter led the way, from bracing the front of the cart as they went up the escalator to constantly checking his phone to making sure they were still going the right way back. The only real interruption was, when they were almost back, Hana pulling him aside to say,

“You know, your parents aren’t here; you are,”

a piece of advice Peter didn’t really have time to comprehend before they got back to Horizon Academy, and once they were there, wandering the halls back to the team room. And once that had happened, well, there were bigger problems to deal with.

“Where is everyone?”

A badger...an animal problem...this was definitely not something David was expecting in the slightest. However, there were some thoughts running through his mind some. "...odd, badgers are creatures that shelter underground...and yet it's just hanging here with all the equipment." he mused, glancing a bit at the manner of how things were at the present. "This doesn't seem like the most ideal spot for it to make a burrow...or sett, as they're called."

He moved closer and closer towards the animal, taking it slow at first. "...now...if we can gently take the creature and relocate it...then we should be fine..." he muttered, removing his jacket for the moment in order to use it to grab this animal. However...he tripped a bit, almost losing his footing...and unfortunately the badger now was locking eyes on him. "....uhhhh...hi there..."

“It is a law of nature we overlook..."

There could be a ruckus heard not too long after, even a yell...

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" David would be seen rushing out of the room with the crazed and now annoyed badger chasing at his heels. "It was an accident!! I just was trying to move you from where you were!!! SOMEONE CALL THIS THING OFF ME!! GET ANIMAL CONTROL!! SOMETHING!!!!"

With the efforts of Sarah, Ms. Breiner and the collective might of the duel team, they had managed to eventually subdue the badger. How they did it? With great effort. What did they do with it? Who could tell.

The only thing for certain was that it was now the next day. As per usual, the students had grouped back up in the small gym. This time, Clara had been there waiting for them as well as a student who the group would recognize from yesterday's escapades; Sarah. The girl seemed to be reading a book and didn't seem all that interested in the people entering. There was a few bags also near the side of the room, which on closer inspection would have some of the food and drinks that the group had purchased yesterday.

When everyone had finally made it in, Clara cleared her throat saying, "hey, everyone. Sorry about  yesterday, I had some things to take care of. Some of it for today and some of it for next week. I know I kept you all in suspense, but i told you to keep your calendars free this week, right? Well, that's because we have a practice match scheduled. For today." The woman hastily said the second part, clearing her throat saying, "short notice, yeah. Some things had to be changed around, but we got it one! As for yesterday's trip," the girl pointed towards the food, "it'll be good to refresh ourselves before we get there and during the match itself. Healthy and well nourished body leads to a healthy brain and all that."

Pulling out her phone, the woman looked at it for a moment, before saying, "right. We'll probably get ready to leave in the next 15 minutes. Anyone have any questions?"

Hana had been rather disappointed to find out that while they were away the rest of them had been having an adventure with a furry creature. She had demanded to see any pictures any of them had taken and then ran off to try and find more stray animals to meet.

Unfortunately for her it seemed the campus was fresh out of furred friends. She was disappointed to be sure but decided that it was fine as she already had gotten plenty of adventure for the day.

She wasn't going to go to the dueling club the next day but as she thought about the exciting time she had the other day she thought perhaps she should check in a bit more often. This time there was another new person there. "You're multiplying!" She declared as she entered.

She noticed a small pile of food and drinks waiting and she wondered if these were her snacks for the day. She had forgotten to grab more than three meals before coming here and was a little bit hungry so she'd appreciate it.

Along with the others she listened as the coach explained that they were going on an adventure. Though she was alarmed by the thought that they were meant to share that food on the way there. She sure hoped it was a short trip!

"right. We'll probably get ready to leave in the next 15 minutes. Anyone have any questions?"

Hana raised her hand and waved it about energetically. "Oh oh me me! Uhh...haven't we BEEN having practice matches?"

Clara sighed at the girl saying, "right, should've more specific. These are against another school. So you'll be dueling different people today."

Hana stared for a second then looked around at the others. She looked again at the coach and said, "we can DO that?"

"Have you never...?" The woman raised an eyebrow before shaking her head. "Yes. We can. Me and the other team's coach usually talk it over and then decide when and where. The where is at their place, which is why we'll be leaving soon."

So exciting! So many people to meet and talk with! "Well then let's get goin!" She pumped her fist in the air. Maybe she could go out to eat with them after!

The thought of food reminded her of her main concern. "Oh. But, that's not nearly enough for everyone is it?" She pointed at the bags.

The next day left Peter more than a little sore. Worse, it wasn’t a soreness that was localized to any one part of his body, he just kind of hurt all around. What had caused the most, even? The walking around all afternoon with only, like, two breaks? Being pressed against the guard railings of an escalator by a questionably-obtained shopping cart? Or was it the barely-describable things they had to do to deal with the badger? There was just no way to be sure. Peter just knew he wasn’t happy about it.

He was still trying to stretch his shoulders as he walked into the all-too-familiar duel team gym, ready for another day of scrimmaging and hopefully less badger-hunting. Coach Clara’s return was a welcome one, and the sight of the bags of groceries they’d procured the day before was reinvigorating as well.

Then Coach Clara said the words “practice match,” and, while Hana was asking questions that must have been pertinent to her, there was only one question in Peter’s mind when he put up his hand. “Yeah, uh, with who?”

“Oh, right,” Coach Clara said. “Forgot to mention that. Ocean's Coast Academy. They're a school that's in our prefecture and up until last year have been pretty below average. But, they've picked up traction and are looking for more practice partners, so I got us a match with them.”

Of course it was, Peter thought. Who else could it be? There were a few other schools in the area, obviously, but why wouldn’t it be the one with the student (okay, counting Laurie, students) they’d already met? But it sounded like his thoughts were complaining, and he wasn’t sure why that was the case. They’d certainly have run into each other at some point anyway; it wasn’t like Ocean’s Coast was going to disappear from his life after yesterday. So why the sudden mood change?

Instead of solving anything, Peter turned his attention to the food. “Hana, you were the one who put all that stuff in the cart. It better be enough food,” he said. He walked over and grabbed a granola bar. “Does anyone else want one while I’m over here?”

It had been the end in one way or another. Stabbed. Smashed. Poisoned. Burned. Shot. Though it had come in all shapes and forms the end had come to you in one way or another. And there was little waiting for you on the other side.
Simply the ever present sensation of floating. Drifting. Sinking.
You try to hear. You try to feel. You try to think. But there is little to make sense of, little to understand, and nothing that you can fully comprehend. Time presses on but you can not figure out how long this goes on for. An eternity? An instant?
As you drift in this oblivion a voice speaks to you. Perhaps you speak back to it. But you cannot decipher its words nor meaning, and thus any reply you might have made can be equally as understood. Yet, the voice continues. And it finishes. You begin moving. Rushing. Rising. And then -

The ringing of loud bells echoed throughout the ancient church, signaling that it was time to awaken to all those who had found themselves in it. Those individuals found themselves resting, sitting, in a wooden pew. The seats were all scattered about the floor, not lined up in any particular order though all facing forward. Once they opened their eyes they would be able to take note of several features of the building. One, the floor. Old, dark and wooden, same as the pews, with clumps of large, thick grass scattered about. Second the walls, shimmering as the light reflected off of the multicolored agate stone that made them up. Third, the stained glass window ahead of them.
The window ahead of them looked as if sunlight were flooding through it, shining downward into the room. And bizarrely so too did the other six windows, three on either side, in the room. Each had a blue background to it and each depicted some sort of creature or object.
To the left; a white bird with the edges of its wings shining like a prism, a gray wolf with arcs of yellow on and around it, and a purple orca with black where one would expect white.
To the right; a tree with brown trunk and green leaves, a silver gear with lines of green converging onto its center, and a black stone with cracks of red.
In the center at the head of the room it depicted a serpentine creature with antlers protruding from its head, coiled around a golden orb with a black center.
The final thing to note was there were no other rooms in this small building. And were they to look backward, they would see no door they could've entered from.

Though the forecast was showing it would be a dark and stormy night, the skies seemed to only be overcast at the present mid-day time. And yet in spite of these bleak looking skies it did little to abate the activities and excitement of the people of Camellia. Though the big city didn't know much in way of rest today was especially abuzz with activity as the people had all filed into the new - several year old - Aspect Stadium, the main hub for all things Blue Rose would be broadcast. The reason was simple. Today was a day for introductions, for promotion and for showcasing. Each and every duelist partaking in the Blue Rose tournament had been called to the new - though in reality five year old - Aspect Stadium; the building where all duels for Blue Rose would be held. All thirty two of them were to listen to the announcer for the event tell them all that was expected for the tournament. The rules, code of conduct, the long and storied tradition and history of the both the tournament and the sport. And finally for the viewers at home a short introduction of each of the players, simply stating all of their names, decks and what province they were representing. When all was said and done, the group was dismissed from the tournament hall and free to go about their business.
Upon exiting the stadium proper, they would see a crowd of people who had all been waiting for them, some fans of the sport and some reporters and journalists looking to interview the duelists. Naturally some of the participants were more popular than others, last year's third place being swarmed the moment that she had left the building, and they would deal with their fans and crowds in their own way. The group of tournament participants would be able to spend the rest of their free time however they wished for the day, knowing full well that tomorrow was the start of the games proper.
Iris, for her part, didn't particularly feel in the mood to do any press for herself as well. Smiling and waving to all the people who had called out to her, Iris merely continued her way forward and managed to get past all of them. Looking up to the sky the girl frowned, thinking that the gray skies wasn't the best of omens for the coming tournament. Not to mention it was neither sunny nor raining, making her ever present parasol nothing more than a fashionable accessory. Sighing to herself, the girl continued to walk into the unfamiliar city proper, thinking that surely there was something to pass the time with.

So... Most people won't know this about me, but generally when I play this sacred card game we all love so much, I have a tendency to place my cards in the center of my field first. My brother on the other hand, tended to place his cards on the right side of his field. This always bugged me as a kid, becuz I couldnt figure out which way was correct.. or if neither were. To remedy this, I had thought up the idea of an archetype that forces the player to think strategically about where exactly they play their cards, as it could seriously impact the duel - for better, or for worse. Problem was, I never knew how to word the effects, since cards like "Which Starling" and all of the "Mekk-Knight" cards hadnt even been a twinkle in anyone's eyes yet. But now, my friends.. Now, after many years of having this concept and a rather poorly thought out and rushed attempt about a year ago, I can proudly say that I'm not only giving this dream concept of mine another shot, but that I've decided to go ahead and revamp my old attempt, by making changes to the old designs and attempting to make them quite a bit more thought out.

Here's the basic idea, at it's simplest:

WATER Psychic Ritual Archetype, based on humanoid slime creatures, that focuses heavily on the strategic and careful placement of its own cards in order to properly utilize the versatility of its abilities. The lower Level "fodder" monsters have a certain effect they can earn depending on which of these three MMZs theyre in: Center, Leftmost, and Rightmost. They also have a bit of a floating effect on destruction involving an opponent's card, becuz I was having major issues with being forced to end my turn cuz I got negated merely once. Plus, theyre slimes. They aint particularly easy to kill. The Bigger, Bossier, Ritual monsters of the archetype focus on disruptive effects on summon with column play, they give buffs or get abilities when there is an archetypal monster in an adjacent MMZ to them, and some gain an additional effect if there is a Spell/Trap card in the adjacent space below them.

Now that the basic summary is out of the way, without further ado, the "Protean" archetype:

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Main Deck Monsters
      Cerulean Protean
      WATER - Level 3 - Psychic/Effect - 800/1300
This card gains 1 of the following effects, depending on which Main Monster Zone it's in:
      ● Rightmost: Increase this card's Level by 1.
      ● Leftmost: Once per turn; you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your GY.
      ● Center: Once per turn, you can shuffle 1 "Protean" card from your GY into your Deck, then draw 1 card.
If this card is destroyed by battle or an opponent's card effect: you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your hand or GY, except "Cerulean Protean". You can only use this effect of "Cerulean Protean" once per turn.

      Lavender Protean
      WATER - Level 3 - Psychic/Effect - 1000/1000
This card gains 1 of the following effects, depending on which Main Monster Zone it's in:
      ● Rightmost: Once per turn, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your hand.
      ● Leftmost: Once per turn, when a Ritual Spell is activated; you can draw 1 card.
      ● Center: Psychic monsters you control cannot be targeted by your opponent's card effects.
If this card is destroyed by battle or an opponent's card effect: you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your hand or GY, except "Lavender Protean". You can only use this effect of "Lavender Protean" once per turn.

      Seafoam Protean
      WATER - Level 4 - Psychic/Effect - 1300/1200
This card gains 1 of the following effects, depending on which Main Monster Zone it's in:
      ● Rightmost: All Ritual Monsters you control gain 500 ATK.
      ● Leftmost: You can reveal 1 "Protean" Ritual Monster in your hand; Special Summon 1 "Protean" monster from your Deck whose Level is equal to the difference between this card's and the revealed card's Level. You can only use this effect of "Seafoam Protean" once per turn.
      ● Center: Once per turn, you can banish 1 "Protean" monster from your GY; this card's Level becomes the banished monster's Level.
If this card is destroyed by battle or an opponent's card effect: you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your hand or GY, except "Seafoam Protean". You can only use this effect of "Seafoam Protean" once per turn.

      Vermillion Protean
      WATER - Level 4 - Psychic/Effect - 1400/1100
This card gains 1 of the following effects, depending on which Main Monster Zone it's in:
      ● Rightmost: If you activate a Ritual Spell, or if a Ritual monster's effect is activated; your opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response.
      ● Leftmost: Once per turn; you can send 1 "Protean" monster from your Deck to the GY.
      ● Center: During your Main Phase; you can add 1 "Protean" Spell/Trap card from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Protean Lavender" once per turn.
If this card is destroyed by battle or an opponent's card effect: you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Protean" monster from your hand or GY, except "Vermillion Protean". You can only use this effect of "Vermillion Protean" once per turn.

      Magenta Protean
      WATER - Level 6 - Psychic/Ritual/Effect - 1000/2000
You can Ritual Summon this card with any "Protean" Ritual Spell. If this card is Ritual Summoned: destroy all cards your opponent controls that share a column with this card. If a monster in a Main Monster Zone adjacent to this card would be Tributed for the Ritual Summon of a "Protean" monster: you can treat that monster as all the necessary Tributes for the Ritual Summon.

      Scarlet Protean
      WATER - Level 7 - Psychic/Ritual/Effect - 2500/2400
You can Ritual Summon this card with any "Protean" Ritual Spell. When this card is Ritual Summoned, return all cards your opponent controls that share a column with this card to their hand. Once per turn: you can target 1 monster your opponent controls; Psychic monsters in Monster Zones adjacent to this card gain half the targeted monster's ATK until the End Phase. If you control a Spell/Trap card in your Spell/Trap Zone adjacent to this card: this card can attack twice per Battle Phase.

      Silver Protean
      WATER - Level 8 - Psychic/Ritual/Effect - 3000/2300
This card can be Ritual Summoned with any "Protean" Ritual Spell. If this card is Ritual Summoned: You can banish all cards your opponent controls in this cards column. Monsters in Main Monster Zones adjacent to this card cannot be destroyed by battle or your opponent's card effects.
