The Chosen [IC / Not Accepting / PG-16]

Recommended Posts

With some smart action from the mages, the only slime left that had appeared in the middle of the group was on its last legs, unable to hurt Keres while she was free to toss it about and break its core. This left Reinaan with three options. Finish off the weakened slime near him was the first and least productive. The Water Chosen and light mage seemed to be in no immediate danger with it. But that wasn't true of Lindow and Ryia, both of whom had limbs being pulled on by clingy slimes. The boy's gut told him to rush to the Thunder Chosen's aid due to their friendship but he had enough sense to take stock of the fact that Lindow's opponents were smaller and weaker, and Damien was there who hopefully would intervene if it got out of hand for the witch hunter. Ryia meanwhile had struck a core yet the monster had not died and was even now practically on top of her, threatening to tear an arm off.

With a growl the draken charged forward with his halberd aimd forward, ready to skewere the second core that Ryia had called to his attention. The slime creature made no movements fast enough to intercept the boy and it soon found the metal tip of the draken's weapon piercing its second core. Reinaan had powere through the actual slime fairly easily and already the creature was shrinking some, lessening the tight grip it had on Ryia's arm but not fully relinquishing it. For some reason it didn't continue deflating until there was nothing left like the others. It was smaller, but still definitely alive. But to the best of his abilities, Reinaan couldn't make out another core to explain the phenomenon. The boy hissed in frustration as he attempted to hoist the monster off the ground to slam it back down to the ground as he'd seen Keres do to the smaller slime. But the slime wasn't viscous enough for this upward force to do much but move his weapon through the mass of the slime.

"Ziiyol!" Reinaan barked to his spirit. The fire spirit answered the call quickly, knowing her partner's intention and merged with him. In the same motion the draken retracted the halberd with his left hand as he slashed at the remaining bulk of the slime with the flame claws now extending off his right hand. One way or another it was going to let go of Ryia and die.

"Why are you looking over there, don't you have any sense of self preservation." Madelyn scolded Keres. The Water Chosen looked at the other girl then back towards the nearby slime. "Yes, exactly. What would you have done if it broke through...not that I make barriers that easy to break. In any case, it looks weak so it shouldn't be that hard to finish off."

As she said this the slime lunged again at Keres only to hit the barrier once more. Keres noticed as it did that the core was near the surface as it slammed into it. When the slime started to pull back from the barrier and fall she acted. Bringing up some water towards the slime to latch onto the core. The rest of the slime started to fall and the core was held aloft. Though she noticed not all the slime left it. Still the small layer wasn't enough to hold back the crushing force of the water and the core shattered.

Taking a deep breath she looked towards Madelyn who gave a small smile and a nod. The two of them looked back to Lindow to see him in a troublesome predicament.

The slime attached to his leg had nearly overtaken the whole thing. The pressure from before increased as the monster attempted to crush Lindow's leg in its slimy grip. The slashing didn't do much to the surface of the slime and soon it was too close to his own leg. If he swung recklessly he'd more likely cut himself rather than the creature.

To add to this the other slime was coming back for more. Latching itself onto Lindow's other leg and beginning the same process the other had done.

Damien, having just rushed down the other slime in front of him, and cleaved it in two, looked back to see the predicament. With a low whistle he said "I don't think you want me having a go at that one."

Over by Reinaan and Ryia the slime had started to change shape. All the clawing that the Draken was doing tossed, bubbling from the flames, chunks of slime off of it. Yet the slime only continued to merge together with it almost as fast as Reinaan could rip it off. Ryia would notice that the creature now more closely resembled the other slimes. Only larger than the others. Despite Reinaan's slashing it still tried to overtake him. Moving towards the Reinaan and, if it was able to make contact with his body, it would attempt to surround the boy around his midsection.

With the Draken's help, Ryia felt the arm that was attached to her suddenly go slack as the second core of the creature was destroyed. Bringing her sword up, the Earth Chosen cleaved off the remaining slime attached to her, only for it to naturally go back to its source. As Reinaan had begun striking at it wildly, it was clear that the creature had at least one more core to its form, though it certainly didn't seem to be that much different from the other slimes at this point. As it started to make its way towards Reinaan, it seemed that the Draken didn't have much of an idea where the core was and so the girl - now unhindered by its attacks - looked towards the slime. Seeing a similar dark green area in its center, the girl took a deep breath as she readied her blade.

From all of her previous efforts, she knew she couldn't just bring her sword straight down onto the core from where she was - not only was it too dense to cut through all at once, her sword also just wasn't that long. So instead, getting her grip with two hands, the girl began to slash forward at the top of the slime. Lopping off a chunk of the slime, it still seemed that her blade wouldn't be able to reach it. And so she continued to slash more and more repeatedly. Taking off more of the slime, it seemed to stop paying attention to Reinaan and instead inched its way towards Ryia aiming to swallow her. Though she tried to continuously step away she realized that the slime attacking her was not the biggest of her issues.

As she continued to slice against the slime's body, she started to feel a greater resistance from the creature, as it seemed to now be trying to envelope and crush her sword rather than her. Thinking she wouldn't be able to make it to the creature's core herself, Ryia shouted to the Draken, "Reinaan, there's another core. In the center."

Reinaan's attacks were certainly effective at tearing off chunks of the slime. But there had to be another core somewhere or else it would have melted already. And for that, the slashing was getting frustrating as it wasn't ultimately getting him anywhere. The creature seemed to be moving to grab at the Draken which he intercepted by slashing at the parts that moved towards him, but still that wasn't going to stop it from reforming and doing it again. It was Ryia who broke through the frustration by calling to the boy's attention that there was in fact another core after she had begun slashing away at the monster to get toward it. With both Chosen having slashed so much of the slime away, Reinaan now could see the core as well and didn't need much more than the Earth Chosen's calling attention to it to know what he had to do.

"Dead slime coming up!" he shouted as a means of psyching himself up. He wasn't entrely eager to but that didn't stop Reinaan from closing what distance there was between himself and the slime before he pressed his entire body up against it before drawing his hand with the flame claws back. With a shout he trust the claws into the mass of the slime which easily tore through the bulk of its matter. As it got closer to the core some resistance set in but not nearly enough to stop the fiery appendages from piercing deeply inside, ultimately striking and shattering the core inside. This would prove to be the large slime's last core as what was left began to melt away. Leaning into it as he had been, Reinaan found himself stumbling forward in Ryia's direction. In a split second he dropped his halberd in his off hand and retracted the flame claws to not hurt her as he began flailing his limbs about to find his balance unsuccessfully.

"I don't think you want me having a go at that one." He heard Damien speak but didn’t bother to look his way.

“…” Lindow glared daggers down at the gooey organisms as they had a go at slowly devouring his legs. The first slime was now far too close to his body to risk wildly slashing at, and its accomplice would reach that point too if he didn’t act quickly. Feeling more eyes on him, the man glanced up to mages that were watching from a distance to see what kind of aid they were willing to offer.

"I can't do much after they have a hold of you...unless you don't mind some seared flesh." Madelyn said. This was expected, she had already expressed a distaste for the Thunder Chosen, so why would she help him now? On the other hand, Kere’s maintained her usual silence. Though Lindow thought he could feel hesitation coming from the girl…

“Tsk,” With a kiss of his teeth, Lindow returned his attention to his predicament. He’d have to handle it this himself. Sparks began to dance between his fingertips as he brought his hand up and called upon Lily’s strongest ability. In the same breath, the Third Blade had ignited and consumed the entirety of its wielder’s hand in cyan lightening.

The man had slain enough magic users to know that shape and power of their spells were subject to change through their will. This knowledge of his prey and the first-hand experience he had received from the few times he managed to modify the properties of The Third Blade before now… these dire straits were a good as time as ever to try applying them both.

“Let’s try this then!” Focusing the flow of energy towards his middle and index fingers, Lindow felt a tinge of excitement small precise blade was formed from his thoughts. Without wasting anytime, he quickly swiped the miniature Third Blade down his leg, wincing at the current of electricity that bit his thigh through his leather armor. The slime seemed none too pleased with his development , and quickly to pull back after tasting the sting of the Thunder spirits magic. Seeing this as an opportunity, Lindow thrusted the small blade through the creature's core, destroying it completely.  "Heh, would you look that?" Beaming with satisfaction the witch hunter turned his attention to the last slime as it tried its best to hurry up his ankle to his calf.

Though before he could strike at it with his magical construct, a brief flash of confusion could be seen on his face as he felt the Thunder Spirit's power suddenly flare before dissipating completely. Had gotten too excited? Nonetheless, with his right leg free, Lindow was able to twist body away from the remaining slime, before raising his short sword up high above his head a bringing it down heavily through the creature's core.

As the last slime melted away into the water the group held for a few moments in case of more attacks. When nothing happened there was a feeling of relief that could be felt by several of the members.

"What a mess." Madelyn said. "Good to see that you can handle that much. I'd be worried otherwise."

"You could say it was a...sticky situation." Damien said casually as he sheathed his blade and strolled on past the others on his way down the tunnel once more.

"You could, but you really shouldn't." Madelyn said with a groan.

Keres wasn't sure what to think of the exchange but she was somewhat disappointed that nothing remained of the slimes. Whatever traces left over was lost in the large puddle that was covering the floor. She was rather curious about them. The only equivalent she had seen in the swamp were the gelatinous cubes and they worked rather differently.

The group started out once more to try and reach the end of this tunnel without another incident. Partway through Keres let out a soft "Oh." Followed by. "Because slimes are sticky." She nodded to herself and continued on without a change in expression nor tone to indicate she realized she had been slow on the uptake.

The tunnel continued on for a good while until they realized that it was starting to move slightly upward. Finally, with another sense of relief, they were above the level of the water and found themselves at the end of this tunnel.

Madelyn ringed out the water from her robe with a look of disgust as the rest looked around.

It seemed that they were at the end of a fork. With one tunnel going back the way they came, but on the other side, which was presumably the tunnel they hadn't taken. It seemed to be about as narrow as it had been earlier.

However there was another tunnel branching off farther down the direction they had been heading. A single, wide, tunnel that gently sloped downward for enough distance they couldn't see the end.

"Pretty straight-forward, it seems." Damien noted as he leaned against the wall to rest a moment.

Ryia was relieved to be done with the whole ordeal against the slimy menace. The girl bent down and picked her shield off the ground, shaking the water and residual slime off of it before examining it. The girl sighed at all the abuse that her shield had taken once again, knowing that this journey on the island wasn't close to over but already acknowledging it was going to need a full on repair by the end again.

Looking towards her Draken ally, Ryia nodded saying, "um, thanks for the assitance. Reinaan. I uh, well, I probably couldn't have beaten it on my own. Yeah." Though she was thanking the Fire Chosen, the girl also sounded like she was slightly admonishing herself, being unable to contend with just one enemy when they had been outnumbered at least 2:1.

All the same, the girl was getting ready to move on and see what else was further down this tunnel. The whole thing was incredibly strange to her. She wondered what could have made a cavern like this to begin with and why it was under the ruins. Specifically as well if the people here had built this old village on them or if they had dug it out themselves. And in either case, why? And for what reason did they cover it up? If covering it up was that stone structure's only purpose to begin with -

"Oh. Because slimes are sticky."

The girl stopped in her tracks, stifling a laugh that came out more sounding like a half sneeze. Without saying anything more, but with a small smile on her face, Ryia continued to make her way forward. After a bit of walking they had reached yet another crossroads. Looking back, it seemed that the two paths originally had converged onto this point, leaving only one path ahead of them to take. As Damien made his comment, Ryia nodded with a small, "mhm," ready to see if there were any answers to be found down it.

Lindow took a deep as he shook his blade free of what remained of the slimes. They were no warriors, but these creatures actually managed to give the party more trouble than expected. Kicking a pile of ooze to the side, he scoffed. "My apologies. I guess you were worth killing after all..." Were his parting words as he followed the group further down the cavern.

"Oh. Because slimes are sticky."

He listened idly as the others bantered, only looking away from examining walls the ruins when he thought he heard Keres make a jest. "You two should go into comedy if we survive all this." He chirped dryly despite knowing the girl would fail to find humor in her genuine musing.  When the group reached the next crossroad, Lindow simply slowed his stride rather than stopping completely. There didn't seem to be any question to where their path would lead, and after hearing Damien and Ryia both express the same desire, Lindow pointed ahead. "Shall we?"

Reinaan eventually caught himself without injuring Ryia but he paused a moment to ensure his footing was sure and not about to upended by another slime they had missed. Looking around they all seemed to be dead or dying which gave him the confidence to begin moving again after releasing Ziiyol's power. The fire spirit appeared behind her partner, a wide smile on her face. The Draken went to retrieve his now soaked halberd as the Earth Chosen thanked him for the help. It was a bit difficult to tell if she was just being down on herself but the woman seemed almost disappointed she hadn't been able to handle it alone. That was a feeling the young hunter knew all too well.

"Hey, don't worry about it. Not everyone gets to stand out on every hunt." the boy began, drawing on familiar terms to him to get across the lesson he'd learned. "But that's why we're a team. Give it a bit and I'm sure we'll trade places. Just matters we're always there for each other." Reinaan concluded as the party regrouped and prepared to move on. As Madelyn and Damien began speaking, Reinaan was caught off guard at the start of snicker escaping his mouth at the swordsman's sticky situation comment. For someone he thought he was on bad terms with he hadn't expected to find something funny. But this would just show weakness in this awkward social game. Best to keep it under check.

"Let's go!" Reinaan enthusiastically declared as the group came to their next crossroads. It was largely a way to keep himself psyched up but it was also an exercise in seeing how well the place echoed. Probably not the smartest action. Everyone seemed to already know which direction they wanted to keep moving down and the draken had no disagreements. The boy would stick to the front of the group again but this time he had has his face angled down at the water. He couldn't afford to miss any more slimes. The next batch might grab someone before they had any time to react.

"You two should go into comedy if we survive all this."

"Oh you wound me. Didn't you know that was my profession all along?" Damien said.

The group continued along the tunnel. Besides it sloping downward it didn't seem to be anything special. It was wide and tall enough for them to all comfortably walk down and only occasionally did they have to take care not to tumble downwards.

The slope wasn't so steep that they were constantly having to watch their step but it seemed to continuously go downward and the tunnel went on for quite a long ways.

"Whatever is at the end of this it seems to be deep underground." Madelyn said. "Something they wanted to keep far from the surface..."

After a long period of walking the tunnel finally began to level out. And, the moment they noticed this shift, the group would notice something else. The air felt heavier as they walked along the path. They felt on edge as they continued. An uncomfortable tingling sensation going through their skin.

Damien let out a low growl and, when Keres looked back at him, he shook his head as if trying to shake water off of it. Running a hand along his face and through his hair the young man sighed. "Already? Seriously?"

The reason for his statement became clear soon.

The tunnel emerged into a huge cavern. Much larger than even the ruined town up above them and with a ceiling so high they wouldn't be able to reach even if they stood on each other's shoulders.

Along the floor to the left and right, as if creating a pathway, were a multitude of large stalagmites jutting out from the ground.

These rock formations stretched for a long time and seemed to make a U shape eventually. And at the end of the U, across from the tunnel they had come from, they saw it.

Sitting atop of a rough stone table of sorts was the object they were searching for. A Demon Gate.

In this cavern the air was even thicker. The unnerving sensation stronger. So much so that they almost missed the other thing that was in the cavern. Which was rather shocking when they noticed it given its size.

Around sixteen feet in length and, when it stood up as the group entered, at least seven feet tall a massive lion was positioned in front of the gate.

The lion's fur was an unusual color. On one side it was dark red and the other light, icy, blue. Even more unusual was that the beast had two heads. On the light blue side its head was covered in a pure white mane. And the other, red, side the mane was black.

The beast gazed at the group for a few moments and then both heads let out a roar.

Keres's eyes flicked upwards, to the side, as she noticed something unusual. As the beast roared the air in several spots seemed to ripple. "The roar is magic...of some sort." Keres said.

"Well, I'm pretty sure the WHOLE thing is magic, actually." Madelyn said as she stared at the beast with wide eyes.

"So, guess this thing isn't going to just let us walk up to the gate, is it?" Damien said. His voiced sounded strained and he tensed up as he spoke. His eyes flicking over to the inactive gate.

And then the lion roared again and moved forward.

Ryia gulped as they continued to make their way through the cave, feeling a strange sensation pass through her. The air around her seemed to have much more of a weight to it then before as well something akin to all of her hairs standing on theirs ends. It was a foreboding sensation, one that made her nervous but at the same time steeled her resolve to keep pressing forward. As they made their way to the end of the tunnel, the group was greeted with the unmistakable site and presence of the object they had been searching for. As she felt the omnipresent sense of dread grow only stronger now that their objective was in plain view. The girl's eyes focused in on it as she felt the undeniable urge to destroy it, as she had the last time they had encountered such a malevolent device.

Focusing out, it became apparent that there was also something very clearly off with the room they were in. Not with the room itself, no. More what was inside the room. That being a giant two headed lion, letting loose an echoing roar within the cavern as it seemed to notice them. Ryia blinked at the strange sight before her, wondering just what it was they were looking at but deciding "magic" was a good descriptor to end it on. As the girl was able to shake off the shock of seeing such a magical and terrifying creature in front of her, she knew that they couldn't all just stand here and wait for the creature to come to them.

Placing her hand on Reinaan, magic coursing through it, the boy would feel his scales harden as she cast her defensive spell on him. Then, with that out of the way, the girl looked to everyone saying, "I'll um, draw its attention." Taking a deep breath, the girl simply called for her spirits aid, the spirit of Earth merging with its chosen. Then, with all of her preparations done and her resolve steeled, the girl charged forward, sword and shield drawn.

As she did, the lion roared back to her, charging at her as well in an upward arc. The girl realized very quickly how foolhardy this charge really was, seeing the massive body of the beast barreling towards her, and stopped to back up a bit before getting bowled over. As it got close enough, the girl dove to the side, managing to avoid turning into part of the caves decorum. Letting out a sigh of relief, she looked up to see that the blue head of the lion was looking straight at her, scrambling to her feet expecting it to bite down on her. Instead, though, the head took a deep breath, before exhaling at her. Letting loose a breath attack of streaming cold, Ryia panicked seeing the magical attack and smashed her hand into the ground, causing the earth wall to shoot up and block the attack. Frazzled by the creature's sudden attack, Ryia simply shouted out, "i-it's magic!"

Lindow's eye flickered to Damien once again as they group stood off against the Gate's Guardian. Recalling the other man's decent into madness during the battle with the fire elemental, the question how a second dose of the Demon Gate's vile aura would effect him was suddenly very relevant. Turning his attention to his own state of being, Lindow realized that he been bearing his teeth in a wild grin the whole time. Though below the surface the Thunder Chosen's body was filled to the brim with a nervous energy that flowed down his spine and caused his sword hand to tremble ever so slightly. The Gate's presence stirred the emptiness inside of him... but luckily he knew exactly how to fill it.

As if reading his mind, Ryia stepped up and led the charge. Watching the Earth Chosen narrowly avoid the lions initial lunge, Lindow sprinted forward to join her battle. Reaching the festivities just as Ryia called out,  "i-it's magic!" Lindow got low before springing atop her wall of earth with two throwing knives in his grasp.

"So are we." His voice hummed with power as he sent the two flashes of steel flying towards the lion's head that boasted the red fur and black mane. In the same moment he let out a Discharge that angrily chirped and crackled in the air between him and the creature. Though it seemed Lily's magic wasn't strong enough stun the beast, and before the blades could make contact, they were frozen solid by the blue head's frost breath. "Tsk," By the time the first two blades clanged to the floor, Lindow had already plucked another from his bandolier and tossed it towards the ice breathing face. He watched closely for the lion's next move, poising himself to punish the half that moved to defend with a slash to the side from the Bandit Cleaver.

The Draken's search for more slimes didn't accomplish much but that was the point so Reinaan still felt accomplished in that the rest of their trek down the tunnel proved uneventful. Of course, it was difficult to feel all that good about it with the strange sense of mounting dread building in the boy's stomach. Damien was the first to speak in confirmation of what all those who had experienced the first could now recognize as a demon gate. There wasn't much time to focus on it as the gate had a protector like last time. But there was no crazy fire mage blocking the way, instead a massive, discolored, two-headed lion stood before them. Reinaan had been ready to charge it but before he could Ryia placed a hand on him. The hardening of his scales under the earth magic was a strange sensation but not an unwelcome one when the boy gave his chest some playful taps with his claws to see just how much had changed.

This pause gave Reinaan enough time to stop and think how to approach the fight even as Ryia and Lindow sprung into action. Large cats tended to focus on fast moving things so despite his instincts, Reinaan began moving at a calm pace with his weapon ready toward the left side of the tunnel to try and get around to the beast's side. It's magical attacks as shown by its attack on Ryia were going to make things more difficult but other than that it seemed no more intelligent than any other big cat. Lindow had it's focus now with the man's most recent attacks and so the draken moved without notice. The beast did nothing to stop Lindow's last sword throw, taking a hit to the face but not the eyes. Rather than a magical attack it would swipe a paw at the Thunder Chosen to keep him off of it. At this point Reinaan began moving in toward the creature's side but it took notice of him before he could get as close as he wanted. Instead of hopping onto the things side so he could claw his way up to the top to constantly harrass it, the fire chosen had to settle for thrusting his halberd forward to pierce the beast's side with the spear tip. The flesh of the beast was much harder than expected so while it drew blood, it didn't go nearly as deep as the boy had intended.

The monster had just breathed fire in Lindow's direction before the attack which then took its focus. It turned to focus on the draken and backed up which got Reinaan's weapon out of its side. The boy locked eyes with the fire head of the beast, though the ice head seemed to want in on the action as well. Both sides stared and growled at each other. Though the draken broke the tension by calling to his allies.

"When it's not looking at you don't run!" Reinaan shouted, imparting his earlier strategy to the others. He didn't have time to provide additional information or spell out that now that the beast was looking at him the others had a chance to get to the side or behind it to attack it. The beast was preparing to attack Reinaan and the boy had to focus back on his opponent as it took a swipe at him with a claw. Instead of blocking he charged the twin headed lion to try and get inside its range and close to its necks. However successful he wanted to keep its attention now that he had it.

Keres let out a slight gasp as the flames raced towards Lindow. She moved forward and as quick as she could brought forth a surge of water. Some of it struck Lindow in her haste but she also hit the flames headlong. The water hissed as the powerful fire struck it but were put out.

She nodded to herself and continued along. Avoiding looking at Lindow in case he was upset.

Reinaan managed to avoid being struck by the lions paw but the beast's massive limb would still come down on him and he would feel the weight of the furry creature's leg on his back and shoulder while he charged forward.

While Keres took the Draken's word in mind as she considered how to approach the beast it seemed that Damien was in no such state of mind. Instead he just ran up straight for the lion. His gaze wild and his teeth bared as he ran forward while drawing his blade.

He took a leap and the lion's ice head turned towards him to breath out a blast of frozen air. With a growl Damien brought his blade down towards the breath. And, to Keres's surprise, the blade managed to cut through the icy wind somehow. Though she noticed ice forming around Damien's shoulders and arms which looked to weigh him down as he dropped to his feet.

Before either of them could act again the lion let out another roar.

Something about this roar felt wrong. Keres realized that it reminded her of how oppressive the demon gate felt back at the desert. After this connection was made in her mind she noticed movement on either side.

The strange ripples in the air were back but this time they were more pronounced. And from them gangly arms emerged. Followed soon by unusual creatures.

Their skin was so tight across their bodies that it seemed to be about to split open at any moment. Their faces were skull-like and seemed to Keres like they should not belong to something that would be alive. They were short, only 5 feet tall, but their arms were so long they dragged on the ground. To Keres they seemed like they simply shouldn't exist.

Madelyn was the first to voice her thoughts. "That's impossible." She said. Keres looked to her and her fellow mage turned in her direction. "Do you not realize? Those are Demons."

Lindow's eye narrowed when the lion chose to take his attack rather than counter with its ice again. Was there some kind of limitation to the creature's ability in play there? Unfortunately there wasn't much time to mull it over. Letting himself fall back off Ryia's rock wall to avoid a swipe from the claws, he landed on his feet before dipping out of cover to continue the fight.

By then Reinaan had joined the party, making Lindow feel a little bit better about Damien's wild movements. Even when one of lion's head lashed out with a jet of flame, Lindow's confidence in their number advantage didn't wilt a bit. As the attack approached Lindow smirked, readying himself dodge only to be caught off guard by a sudden blast of water from his side. "..." In an instant the flames were replaced by hissing steam. Leaving Lindow slightly drenched as he turned just in time to see Keres shift her gaze away.

Moments later the lion's roar welcomed four alien creatures onto the battlefield. Their forms were repulsive, appearing more dead than alive with their dragging limbs and wicked looking jaws.

"I'm on it." Lindow called out to his allies before drawing the Bandit Cleaver. Stepping forward as if walking off a ledge, the man fell straight down into his shadow without a sound. Resurfacing from the shadow of one of the infernal creatures, the Thunder Chosen bursted through the veil of darkness with a wide swing from his blade. Having intended to remove the thrall's head from its body, Lindow was surprised to see that it had managed to raise its arm in defense at the last second.

The thrall launched its counter before its severed limb even hit the floor. Swinging its remaining arm its assailant as if it cared not for its on life. Lindow used the Cleaver to defend, shocked by the thing's massive strength despite its size. He struggled against the creature's grasp for a long moment, before being forced to act again when imp ran forward to take a bite out of him.

"I don't think so..." Lindow's words prompted his shadow to rise up between the two combatants with a small opening in its chest. Quickly drawing his short sword, the thunder chosen stabbed through the tangible silhouette. He felt the thrall begin to thrash around at the end of his blade despite the steel digging deeper into its throat with every move. Realizing that the strange creature still had some fight in it, Lindow growled and twist his sword violently, driving it into where the brain would normally be.

Eventually the thrall stopped moving, allowing him to pull his blade free. Sensing movement behind him, Lindow pivoted into the Abyss Seeker's defensive stance and awaited the next creature's attack.

Ryia stayed behind her earthen wall for a moment, looking on as the others went in to engage after her. The group wasn't able to make much head way against the beast, it showcasing its superior size and strength against each of them as well as coupling it with the troublesome magical attacks that it seemed to posses. Adding to her worries, it seemed that Reinaan was getting into a bit of a bind and there seemed to be something concerning her about Damein's demeanor. Yet, she didn't have much time to think about these either as panic soon filled her eyes, looking around as the lion roared. Creatures that she had never seen before; so unearthly yet humanoid, so alien but with a familiar presence, and so monstrous. She didn't need Madelyn to tell her what they were, but that the girl voiced and validated her thoughts in doing so. They were demons. And they were attacking the mages.

Ryia had felt the urge to spring into action and rush back to them, trying to aid them as best she could. Yet Lindow had beat her to the punch, teleporting towards one of them and engaging in combat with it. While she felt terrible about leaving Keres and Madelyn surrounded by them, she also couldn't afford to leave Reinaan and Damien - both who seemed to be in difficult situations themselves - alone. And if she left her proximity to the lion there was little way that she could easily close the distance yet again. So, Ryia took a deep breath, trying to calm and steady herself as she resolved to go on the offensive against the lion. Sheathing her blade, the girl took out her mace and began to steadily walk towards the beast, heeding Reinaan's advice.

Making her way towards the back leg of the creature, the girl reeled her mace back and swung it as hard as she could. The hit was solid and she could tell she managed to hurt it, even if it not breaking anything. The beast, grimacing as it realized it had been assailed started to walk back and turned to face its aggressor. There was a moment of struggle in moving its leg, one that Ryia noticed and didn't want to let up on as the creature moved. Rushing forward, the girl managed to bash her mace against the leg yet again, albeit more a glancing blow this time. Speeding up, the lion sent its nearer front paw towards her, swatting at her like she was a pest. Bringing up her shield, the girl managed to hastily back away from the lion's attack, gulping as the paw narrowly missed her, seeing it up close and personal. As it brought the paw down, though, Ryia's troubles were far from over as the head was now fully facing her.

The impact of the lion's paw onto Reinaan's back and shoulders was something the boy had no real comparison to draw for. He had imagined caveins while exploring the mountain tunnels of home perhaps feeling something like this but thankfully he had made enough room that the impact was still helping propel him toward his target. There wasn't time to be sure nothing was broken or dislocated but his next series of movements would help him figure that much out. The draken found himself able to still move his arms as he closed in on the two-headed lion. The heads stood a fair bit above him making disfiguring the eyes or noses difficult. Another roar sounded and the others reacted in alarm as the word demon hung in the air. Reinaan couldn't afford to be distracted in the position he was in so he raised his halberd and plunged it into the chest of the monster. Again it was difficult to pierce the beast's flesh but the tip plunged a bit deeper in than his first attempt. This kept the lion's faces both focused on him while Ryia moved about to prepare her attack on the hind legs.

Reinaan found himself needing to move immediately as both faces launched their breath attacks his direction. Running out only invited a claw through the back so the boy took a more radical path and ducked under the body of the lion itself, just narrowly avoiding the breaths. The tip of his tail felt the conflicting temperature changes it had been that close. Reinaan got to his feet and took a crouching stance as he moved toward the lower half of the underbelly. This was where he wanted to keep himself for his next maneuver but the beast was beginning to move in response to Ryia's attacks.

"Ziiyol, you're up." He grunted as the fire spirit appeared beside him under the beast. The spirit had several questions to this approach but the boy dismissed the more playful comments and given the presence of the gate and the demons the spirit was inclined to be ever so slightly more serious. As she had done many times before she disappeared into her partner as Reinaan's body began emitting stray sparks. The fire claws extended off his right hand and after the lion had attacked Ryia in response to her blows to its leg the thrust his hand upward and plunged the full length of the firey weapons into the monster's gut until the tips of his own claws were even piercing the flesh. The lion emitted another roar from the sudden searing pain in its innards and both faces began spewing their breath attacks without regard to anything. Reinaan tried to begin twisting the claws as they were lodged in place but the monster took off at a run, charging forward in Ryia's direction. It was all the boy could do to cling to the monster's hide to keep the weapons in their place. Ryia managed to dive out of the way of the charge and unyielding magical breaths as the monster was paying her no attention.

Rather than slam into the wall of stalagmites ahead, the monster took a sharp turn as it approached in an attempt to dislodge the blade stuck in its inttestines. Reinaan was flung off of the beast and was sent spinning, avoiding an impalement of his own but he got well acquainted with the floor. This fresh series of impacts so soon after the heavy impact to his back had the boy taking a minute to get back to his feet. The world had to stop spinning first.

The lion ran for a bit longer before turning around. Strangely thick globs of blood oozing out of its wounds and landing onto the ground with a plop. The thing turned its two heads back and forth. Looking at both Ryia and Reinaan. As it stood it let out another roar and the air rippled again. Though nothing came from it like before.

As the lion eyed its prey and sized them up, trying to decide which to target, there was a shout from the side. Damien came running forward again and brought his sword back to slash at the lion's side. His blade bit into the massive beast's flank. The creature backed away and batted its massive paw at Damien. Catching him in the chest and flinging him away. The red head kept its eyes on Reinaan and Ryia as the blue one turned towards Damien to let loose another blast of freezing air at the reckless man.

-

Lindow managed to slay the first of the demons but the other one had caught up to him during the brief exchange. The creature was lopping towards him with its body crouched and arms dragging behind him. However when he got close the creature straightened up and swung its arm at Lindow at high speed. Batting at Lindow's shoulder with a heavy blow the demon then went to drive its clawed hand on its other arm forward like a lance. Driving towards Lindow's stomach.

-

Madelyn smacked her own face with both hands and shook her head. "Get it together girl, you've got this." she muttered. She noticed Keres coming up behind her, moving hesitantly, and Madelyn stood straighter. Louder she spoke "Don't worry, they're strange but they're still just physical beasts. Little cretins like this are nothing!"

Keres wasn't so sure but she couldn't help but be impressed by her former classmate's confidence. Nodding she watched as two demons came right for them. Trembling slightly as she watched how they moved.

Madelyn raised her arms and as the demons got close they ran straight into a wall of light. Wincing Madelyn focused harder and Keres noticed that a box began to form around the demons. They didn't seem to realize it yet as they bashed against the wall. With every strike she noticed that the wall flashed. And each flash was accompanied by a grunt from Madelyn. She could tell the girl was struggling to keep it up.

One of the demons seemed to realize what was happening and bent down before leaping up. Reaching up with its long arms it gripped where the top of the wall was and started to clamber over. The other soon realized and did the same.

Keres brought forth a geyser of water and pummeled one of them off the wall. Slamming it into the ground and pumping more water into it in an attempt to crush the creature. She tried to do the same with the other but it scrambled over the wall before she could. Madelyn let out a gasp as she released the wall and struggled to keep herself standing in place as the demon landed on the ground.

Ryia picked herself up from the ground, glad to have not been both burned and frozen at the same time, Ryia took a closer look at the lion now that she was safe. It wasn't as though the action itself was particularly surprising, but she still couldn't help but look shocked as she saw the Draken on the underside of the creature. Though he managed to claw through the creature, causing thick clumps of blood to plop out of the creature's open wounds, the girl winced as he was tossed off. Damien, meanwhile, seemed to still be wildly charging the creature, striking it with his sword and though he managed to strike true he was swatted away like a fly by the lion.

Staring down the red head of the lion, Ryia looked between her two companions knowing that she had to take the pressure off of both of them somehow. Gripping her mace tightly, the girl banged it against her shield calling attention to herself before beginning to let out a shout and charge the lion. The red head snarled before letting loose another flaming breath attack, but rather than trying to block it, Ryia just braced herself and continued to charge through it. Though the flames were hot and her metal armaments weren't helping, the ring that they had gotten back in the desert proved to still be working as being warm was the worst of the flame breath's effects. Getting close enough, the girl wound up her mace arm ready to strike, only for the beast to stop its bellowing flame and immediately attempt to snap its jaw down at her.

Seeing the bite coming, Ryia forcibly put a stop to her momentum and with a nervous expression hastily pulled her arm back from swinging into its jaws and start to backpedal furiously away from it. As the creature ended up biting air instead of her, though still very close for comfort, Ryia let out a sigh of relief. However, all she had managed to do was distract one head and was still feeling pressed to apply even more pressure as the beast let out a frost breath towards Damien. Though the man managed to slash through some of the frigid air, it was clear that the ice was starting to coat him even more and become more of a problem.

As Ryia continued to back away, the lion seemed prepared to continue its assault on the girl. As it began to charge at her again, the girl noticed that Reinaan had picked himself up. Using the opening that Ryia had provided for him, as the beast began to charge at her the Draken boy moved forward and dropped to the floor, his stone infused scales sliding across the stone floor. As the beast pounced, the Fire Chosen struck back against the creature's already wounded belly, slashing into it even more and causing more damage to the creature.

Ryia's focus was torn between the beast and her companions attack, as well as being incredibly close to the lion to begin with. As she tried to back away from it, she figured the only way that she would avoid the creature's attack was by diving to the side again. But her thought process was slower than the creature's attack, the lion leaping onto her and pressing one of its paws down on her. Being sandwiched between the cavern floor and the beast's massive paw, Ryia started to let out several grunts of pain and exertion as she tried to push back against the creature to no avail, slowly feeling herself being crushed underneath the immense weight of the beast.

The draken was clearly pleased with himself. The damage Reinaan had gotten in on the lion as well as the ease with which his stone-enhanced scales had slid across the cave floor had him feeling good despite the earlier impacts. He was ready to keep tearing into the beast however much it took to get its weird blood flowing normally. But he didn't have the time to admire what he'd already done, further action was immediately necessary. Ryia had been pinned by one of the front paws. The impact on his shoulders and back was enough to know how painful that was and the fire chosen began moving to get the monster off of his fellow chosen. The boy retracted the fire claws for a moment as he ran up to and grasped onto the beast's hind quarters. With minimal exertion he was able to pull himself up onto the monster's back. Reinaan shuffled up some before extending the flame claws again and plunging them deep into the monster's back, hoping to strike at the spine.

Loud roars filled the room again as the monster registered the pain it was in. It reared back off its front legs in response to the sudden pain which gave Ryia enough time to start rolling out of the way before it brought the paws back down. For Reinaan's part he kept the claws in the monster's hide as deed as he could to hang on and he found it a lot easier than hanging onto the thing's stomach had been. As the monster settled back to all fours it began shaking its torso in an effort to dislodge Reinaan. The boy fought his hardest to stay on, digging into the fur and skin with every claw, flame or otherwise, his body had to offer. He managed to stay on but the shaking soon started subsiding for actual movement as the twin-headed lion began moving toward the two demons closest to the two mages. Reinaan found himself crawling slowly up the beast's back, his goal being one of the two necks. By the time the monster was half way to the demons he was still a ways off.

"Sit still and die!" the draken hissed in frustration as he withstood the urge to stab the thing again shy of his mark. As the beast arrived behind the two demons Reinaan was now within range of either of the necks and so with another shout he plunged the fire claws as deep into the back of the neck of the ice-breathing head as he could.

Lindow could just barely bring his buckler up to brace himself before the second imp's first slammed into his shoulder. Stumbling slightly from the creature's supernatural strength, there was no time to retake his stance before the imp's right had came flying like a spear towards his midsection. Pivoting on his heel, the witch hunter swayed to the side, very narrowly avoiding being impaled. He could feel the creature's claws graze the face of his shield as he shifted his weight and brought the Bandit Cleaver up high to slash at the extended limb. The wound was deep. But still not quite deep enough to render the arm useless...

The roars of the gate's guardian and the cries his allies bounced around the room once more. Though Lindow had no attention to spare the battles of the other chosen. Watching as the imp swung it's arm up in around, the man raised his cleaver up in a defensive stance just in time to block a hammering blow from above. The impact was great, causing his knees to buckling under the strain. Struggling to keep standing under the immense pressure, Lindow watched as the demon pulled back the arm he had just injured. "Crap." He cursed at the sight another spear attack heading his way fast. Forced to think quickly, he manifested his shadow once again to intercept the blow a mere foot away.

Dipping out of the struggle just as the wall of darkness obscured the creature's vision, Lindow quickly whipped his cleaver around in a wide arc to slash at the arm that had been pinning him down. The damage was more noticeable this time but still shy from lopping the limb clean off. Nonetheless, he kept up his offensive, using his speed suddenly close the distance and thrust the tip of the short sword into the demon's face. Even Lindow found the imp's alien hissing unsettling. With his attack throwing the living nightmare into frenzy, he opted to let the unwieldy cleaver clatter to the ground as he felt the demon's hands begin to curl around his shoulders. Staring down a grizzly death, the Thunder chosen pushed closer to his assailant, seamlessly grabbing a dagger from his belt and plunging it into the side the imp's head whilst twisting the short sword deeper into its face.

The imp persisted in pulling its prey in closer despite the severity of its wounds. Snapping its jaws wildly, it did its best it take a bite out of Lindow's face even as he pushed and pulled his blades apart as trying to pull the creature's head apart. Luckily its vitality didn't last much longer, and moments later Lindow was left tangled in the mess of its butchered corpse with his face intact aside for the damage he had came with. After shaking off the body his attacker, Lindow hastily pulled his blades free before returning them to their scabbards just in time to spot the lion heading towards the mages and the remaining imps. Glimpsing Reinaan clinging to the massive creature's neck, Lindow quickly scooped up the Bandit Cleaver before dashing over to help the mages before they were crushed by the guardian our torn apart by demons.

The demon that had made it over the wall charged right for Madelyn. The girl let out another unintentional gasp and threw up a barrier for it to crash into. The creature seemed to be more clever than that, having ran into one wall already, and changed its position to go around the barrier.

Madelyn immediately put another up which the demon scrambled over and dove towards Keres.

The water mage tried to keep her cool but she couldn't focus on pinning the other one and attack this one at the same time. So she had to let the other go and instead brought a pair of columns crashing into the demon. She heard a snapping noise as one of the demon's arms broke with the impact and she kept the pressure up. However out of the corner of her eye she saw the lion barreling in their direction with Reinaan on top and the moment of distraction weakened the spell and the demon fell out of her water trap. One arm broken it didn't seem to be deterred as it continued forward.

The other one had started to join in attacking the mage but then it noticed the lion approach. With a strange cackling noise it lopped towards the lion instead.

While it was in pain the lion still seemed to have an unusually clear sense of the battlefield. As Reinaan inflicted deep wounds into one of its heads the lion noticed the demon approaching and lowered that head. Once it did the demon would jump up to reach with its long arms and bury its own claws into Reinaan's back and attempt to scramble atop of the lion as well.

The lion started to turn, its heads now facing the girls and the other demon. The fire head watched the three and, in spite of the danger to the other head, seemed to be intent on waiting to act.

Damien, body covered in frost, seemed to be growing only more wild as he ran for the lion. The icy head struggled to turn in his direction as the man leapt up to bring his sword down towards the creature's neck. Not giving a second thought about Reinaan's position right in the path of his blade.

Even as this happened the lion let out another roar. And a ripple started to form in the direction of the demon gate. Similar to the one that had spawned the demons. At the moment nothing seemed to be emerging from it however.

So...let's see if I can summarize this.

-One demon is attacking Keres and Madelyn, the girls are trying to keep their cool and cast spells to stop it
- The other demon is trying to use Reinaan to climb up onto the ice head as well
-The ice head is lowering to make it easier
-The fire head is watching and waiting oddly calmly
-Damien is swinging for the neck which happens to be also where Reinaan is

The ice head of the lion was clearly doing poorly from his work and this much had Reinaan happy with how things were progressing. That it wasn't dead or dying yet was frustrating but perhaps only fitting of prey with two heads. He'd have to get a solid strike into the fire head to really see the usual effects of stabbing a thing's throat. For its part the fire head seemed content to merely take stock of the battle. That was fine. If his prey was putting up less of a fight that just meant it was on the brink of dying anyway. The draken hunter would have liked that had that been all it was. A pointy sensation in his rear end and lower back soon alerted him to another issue he'd have to handle first. That of one of the demons attempting to scale him like he had the lion. And annoying as that was he didn't release the flame claws yet. He had to get as much damage as he could in on this thing. But then Damien's maneuver came into view. From his position Reinaan couldn't be sure, but it looked a lot like the sword was going to cut him with the lion.

"Could do with you not trying to kill me too!" he growled at the man as he prepared to exert himself. He doubted the message would land on receptive ears or in any way change Damien's intended course of action. And indeed they didn't. So instead Reinaan released the fire claws so  that he only had to remove his own claws from the beast's neck. Both elbows bent as far as they could before the boy pushed with all his might to get to his feet. The demon was dragged along for the ride but the draken was now standing on the creature's back and well out of harm's way for however Damien's attack played out. Here he took note of the now weakened ice head moving to intercept the swordsman and the boy thought to take care of two birds with one stone. Reaching behind him with both hands, as he had left his halberd before climbing the beast to put all his claws to use, Reinaan grasped the demon's grotesque head. The monster quickly attempted to resist what he was doing but with another heavy exertion the boy was abl to pry the demon off of him and then throw it at the ice head to interrupt whatever attack it was preparing. But the throw wasn't clean so Reinaan found himself slipping and then tumbling off the side of the lion's back as the demon went flying. The boy let out hiss of a curse his grandmother would have slapped him for saying as he tried to lodge any claw he could into the beast's hide but ultimately he still tumbled to the ground. A bit dazed though not as badly as the last time he had fallen off the creature, the draken took a moment to breathe before standing to try and repeat his last maneuver, hopefully demon free this time.

Lindow looked on with no small amount of fascination as he surveyed the battlefield to see where he was most needed next. He found his gaze lingering on Reinaan for the longest. The boy seemed to be in his element- not fire, but atop a creature that he quite frankly had no business mounting... It seemed to be working for him however, and after seeing the lad tumble to the ground relatively unscathed Lindow turned his attention to the mages once more.

Arriving behind the girls whilst Keres was in the midst of using a jet of water to keep the attacking imp and a distance, the Thunder Chosen quickly made his presence known by appearing at the Keres's side with he Bandit Cleaver's in hand. Though little mage seemed startled by his sudden arrival, her magic held true and continued to pound at the imp, forcing it to use its good arm to defend as it slowly tried to push past the watery defense. Seeing this as an opportunity, Lindow plunged his blade the torrent of water, adding it's immense pressure to his own strength as he sprinted down the length Kere's attack, cleaving through the demon's arm and sending it's tiny body flying backwards from the pair's combined might.

"There's more!" The witch hunter snarled with effort as hastily followed the remaining flow of water to avoid having his blade ripped from his grip. Reaching out as digging his claws into the air itself, he grinned as the space ahead of him began to chirp and screech into a web of cyan lighting that bit into the soaking wet imp as it fell to the ground a few feet ahead. Lindow heard a small yelp from behind as he continued his offensive, perhaps little Keres had been closer than he thought...

Still smoking from the super conducted Discharge, the armless demon slumped down the ground as Lindow closed the distance, only to suddenly spring forward with its mouth agape when the man entered striking distance. "hm," Having dealt with this kind of attack twice now already, Lindow was prepared. In a blur of movement, the Thunder Chosen quickly smashed his buckler into the creature's mouth with all of his might, knocking its twisted form upwards off the ground before pivoting to end it's life with a brutal downwards stroke from the Bandit's Cleaver.

"Phew," Slamming the tip of the large blade down into the cave floor, Lindow used it to support himself as he took a moment steady his breathing after such extensive use of the Bandit Cleaver. "sorry to keep you waiting, ladies." He addressed the two mages whilst turning his attention to rest of the battlefield.

Picking herself up, trying to recover from the tumble that she just took, Ryia looked to see that there was a large melee going on at the lion. With Reinaan having mounted the lion and managing to inflict a serious wound on it, he took a tumble off of it as well as he was attacked by a demon. With the Draken managing to shake off the imp, both of them got off the lion, whos ice breathing head had let loose an attack that seemed to only catch the demon. With the demon recovering from the attack, Damien had run up, using the demon as a springboard and slashed at the lion's already injured head, creating a deep gash that oozed the same thick blood as all others had. As the deep gash formed on it, the lion roared in pain and turned to swat Damien, knocking the swordsman to the ground. Ryia, now getting towards the fight elected to try and help, those was intercepted by the recovering demon. Moving to slash at it, the demon was nimble enough to catch the blade, the weapon biting into its arm. Then, with its free arm, it went to swing at Ryia.

Pushing down on her blade arm, the girl then swung her shield arm in the opposite direction, intercepting the clawed hand of the imp. The hand pressed against the metal with a surprising degree of force, Ryia stumbling a step back as she was caught of guard by it. The demon then hadn't given up, yanking on Ryia's blade to pull her closer. Rather then getting in a tug of war with it, though, the girl merely let go of the blade. Balling up her hand into a fist, she then went for a follow up attack, striking the demon in the face though that only seemed to confuse it more then anything else. Pulling her hand back, the girl drew her mace out only for the demon to then charge at her with both claws at the ready. Turning her body and stepping back, the girl raised her shield to block against the creature's good arm and avoid the already damaged one. Though she had managed to block against the attack, the demon ducked down and went to bite at her. Taking another step back, the girl swiftly brought her mace down on the creature's head, though only managed to stagger it. The girl then went for a follow up swing at the creature, though again her mace had only found an awkward glancing blow against the creature's shoulder.

Recovering again from the attacks, the demon then went to grab at Ryia, though rather than avoid away from it she pressed forward, shoving her shield into the creature. Not expecting this, the demon was shoved back, staggering back. As Ryia got ready to keep up her duel with the imp, she noticed that the lion turned to have its red head facing Damien. Inhaling, the lion let loose a stream of flame at the boy. Seeing this, Ryia could only but shout, "Damien!" as the flames raced at him.
