Sunshine Jesse 20 Posted August 6, 2020 (edited) Spoiler Nobody knows how long it's been. Far into the future, the world is united under one government, and the class divide is worse than it ever was. The haves and the have nots are separated by their worlds being almost entirely different- whereas the aristocrats enjoy a lavish, casual lifestyle, those unfortunate enough to be born into the lower classes live in slums that have not advanced a single day in what seemed like eons. The split between the worlds is so massive that the slums are colloquially referred to as the Lower World, and the upper class as the Higher World, with those who control everything known simply as those from "On High"- people who are descendants of ancient heroes and carry their family names, but are now might as well be villains to the overwhelming majority of the world. Some work slave labor in hopes of rising through the ranks and becoming aristocrats themselves- a prospect that, while not impossible, is hopelessly difficult. Some resist, mounting terrorist attacks against the government in an attempt and some... play a game. A massive, ancient game, known internally as KCVW, It is a world unto itself, uncontrolled by the government and separate from it entirely. Many, many people use this game as a form of escapism, and some permanently lock themselves in it- by choice, of course- living the rest of their lives in a world with clear steampunk inspirations and a bit of medieval times thrown in for good measure. These are aesthetics not found anywhere else in the world- a testament to how incalculably ancient this game truly is, and how long it's been since the two halves of world, as we know it, were easily visible to each other. The game is mostly populated by people from the lower world, but sometimes, the aristocrats indulge in it, and those from On High try to invade the world and gain control of it. They are never successful, unable to make a dent in the game, as it's protected by the mysterious PS system- an impenetrable firewall that protects the inner workings of the game- and the DO system- the antibodies of the game that forcibly eject all those who wish to inflict harm onto it. As there are no real administrators or administrative powers- or so it seems- they protect the game through playing that which the game was based upon. A game within a game- a game that used to be played the world over but has fallen out of favor as the divide between worlds grew ever-larger. A game known as Duel Monsters. ...need I explain more? As those from On High intensify their efforts to try to take over KCVW, and the resistance intensifies its efforts to destabilize the Upper World and force their hand, it becomes clear that a huge conflict is about to break out between three different strata of a world that might not be as divided as initially thought. Where do you stand? Do you want to fight, keep things as they are, or solve the myriad of mysteries that exist within this world? All of your actions matter. Whether you choose to engage with the game or not, the world is yours for the changing... (in other words, the YGO part is entirely optional, and there will be mechanics for interfacing with the plot outside of it) I'll elaborate more on the setting if enough people are interested in this.
