Yugioh 5Ds: The Call of the Duel [Not Started/Accepting/PG-16/Interest Chec

Recommended Posts

Yugioh 5Ds: The Call of the Duel is a Yugioh RP, set in the time period following the defeat of Z-ONE at the end of 5Ds, in the aftermath of the Signers of the Crimson Dragon going their separate ways. The story will follow rising stars in the landscape of New Domino in 2038, as the troubled history of their city appears to continue, with a new wave of crime, corporatism, and an undercurrent of occult conspiracy sweeping into the gap left behind by the Z-ONE disaster. Some highlights include; the presence Turbo Duelling Vigilantes, such as the 'Re-Enforcers' and 'Ryder Zero', the reemergence of KaibaCorp into the public eye, Jack Atlas serving as the Head of Sector Security, whispers about remnants of the Arcadia Movement, and more. Intrigue is the name of the game, and the only things you'll be able to trust are yourself, your deck, and if you have it, your Duel Runner.

Rules:

Spoiler
Spoiler

1. All site rules apply.

2. When building a deck, Dark Synchro and Anime cards within a reasonable power level may be allowed in your deck on a case-by case basis, but they will be Limited under TCG rules (You can have ONE of them in your deck).

2a. As an extension of this, Banned cards in the TCG will also be allowed under consideration. Make it part of your character pitch to mark out banned cards in your deck recipe.

3. Seal of Orichalcos, Egyptian Gods, Earthbound Immortals, Meklord Emperors, etc, are off-limits unless they come up in plot. As a general rule, try not to go for archetypes that seem to be unique to their user unless you have a great story-reason to do so.

4. Side deck is technically unlimited, but for the start, have 5 cards in there and your character will build up a reserve throughout the game.

Since 5Ds is one of the more grounded settings in Yugioh, your character's Upbringing and Background (where they were raised and what they do) is generally more limited. You can play with the options listed below to figure out how your concept fits into the setting, but they're more like guidelines than hard rules; throw me something new if you think it's cool and we'll talk about it.

Upbringings:

Satellite: Born and raised in the Satellite; little wealth, mostly unknown, lots of practical skills.

New Domino: Born and raised in lower/middle-class New Domino; middling wealth, private citizen, some practical skills.

The Tops: Born and raised in The Tops; excessive wealth, public figure, few practical skills.

Outsider: Born and raised somewhere else in the world; varying wealth, private citizen, some practical skills.

Mystic: Someone who can communicate with the Duel-Monster Spirit World, whether born with a connection, possessed by a spirit or artifact, or earned some form of enlightenment, has befriended or partnered with spirits, exclusively that of a card in their deck, partners can be benevolent, apathetic, or belligerent, can project into the DMSW.

Psychic: A Psychic Duelist who brings their monsters to life, is a Telekine, but also can be specialized in Telekinetics (Physical Manifestation), Telepathy (Mind-Reading), Empathy (Sensing Emotions and Spiritual Manifestation) or Precognition (Limited Future-Sight), either a loner or part of a larger Psychic society, limited or no control of powers.

Reporter: Anything from a blogger to a news-anchor, manipulates information on a daily basis, always looking for stories, can be motivated by simple greed, malevolent manipulation of facts, truth, or adventure, may or may not work with a news crew.

Scholar: Anything from a Duel Academy student to a homeschooled shut-in to a PhD, knowledgeable on many topics, probably a rules lawyer or a card encyclopaedia, can be a star-student, but could also be a teacher, an independent researcher, or a school ground bully, the NERD background.

Sector Security: Law-Enforcement, can be a foot-cop, motorcycle cop, investigator, prison guard, etc, works with a small squad and supervisor, has a reputation of efficiency, obedience, ruthlessness, cruelty, or even incompetence.

Tournament Champion: You're in the tournament scene, likely looking for fame, glory, recognition, etc, probably used to public life and glamorous lifestyle, you have a well-known catchphrase and/or card, have rivals above and/or below you who will try everything to defame you.

The History of this Game:

Spoiler
Spoiler
Spoiler

This game was started in 2015 and once ran on a different site (RPOL) under a different GM, who's given me the go-ahead to carry his story on. If you think Yugioh peaked at 5Ds, and you have knowledge enough of the setting to make a robust character, then you'll enjoy this little fanmade swan-song to the anime, its story, and classic Yugioh in general. If you don't, that's cool too; feel free to join anyway, but the game will be limited to Synchro and earlier summoning types, though the archetypes will not be so restricted. If you want to run a post-5Ds archetype with enough Synchro support to stand on its own two feet, then no problem.

This will also be a fairly RP-heavy game, so a focus on backstory, character motivation, and interaction is going to be the norm outside of duels. If the day to day of the game feels like an episode of the anime, then we're doing it right. The story will also follow the Subbed Anime's canon and more serious tone while retaining the Dub's nomenclature and names; eg, Ryuske is named Kallen, but he did stab a Sector Security officer, and he didn't just want to 'go off to the mines' during the Crash-Town Arc. As you might expect, it's going to be a more mature setting and plot (let's call it PG16), but I will endeavour to follow the site's rules regarding mature content. Fun is at the forefront here. And before you ask, yes, there will be an opportunity later to make your own card(s) and add them to your deck.

For the Mods:

Spoiler
Spoiler

As for how this will be run, that's up in the air. The old Call of the Duel was run on RPOL, and to be utterly transparent, I love that site. You can create a whole host of threads in one game and organize each thread to represent a specific location so that you aren't backpedalling page after page through a single thread looking for a significant detail. It's especially useful if you have multiple players who aren't in the same place at any given time. It also has private text options which give players as much control over a scene's tension as the GM without a clutter of unnecessary PM's. This also means that secrets can be...well, secret, and a character with significant backstory has a great deal of control over how much any given player knows about them. In an RP-heavy game centred around intrigue and drama, such as this one, it's better to have that than not. All in all, Rpol is a godsend that I'm reluctant to give up as a GM since its extremely useful, in addition to this game having roots on RPOL.

The only problem is that the interest in a Yugioh game on Rpol right now is...nonexistent. So when I got wind that all the Yugioh RP action was happening here, I figured I'd try my luck. Having said that, I don't want to be that guy who joins this forum just to advertise for a different site and poach NEO's members, but I also REALLY don't like the idea of returning to a one-thread RP model when there's a great tool at my disposal. So, Admins and Mods permitting, I would like to host the RP on RPOL while also maintaining a sort of Embassy thread here; an OOC that periodically updates with the goings-on of the players and the story while remaining a place where PC's and observers alike can talk about the game. I can convert the threads on RPOL into PDFs that I can upload as a pure text document in a Drive and link them in the Embassy thread so that people can follow the story as duels and plot points develop. Heck, the Embassy OOC could actually be the OOC for the game while the actual game is run on RPOL. I'm even willing to update the Embassy daily if that's what it takes. The general rules of the RP will also follow the guidelines set up on this site so that even if the game is played on RPOL, its content should still be okay to post about here.

Is this logistically sound? Yes. It's certainly not the most logistically sound option; that would be a game fully on NEO or RPOL, but as I said, I would rather not drop a perfectly good tool, and working out this compromise is better than running the game in a single thread. If the Mods would rather I NOT do that, I am still open to running the game here; it isn't my first choice, but it beats having no game.

Mods, Admins, feel free to probe about this. If you have logistical concerns, ask away. I do live in the EST timezone, though, so expect answers based on that timetable.

      OOC
      May 1st, Sunday, 3:13 PM
Though the forecast was showing it would be a dark and stormy night, the skies seemed to only be overcast at the present mid-day time. And yet in spite of these bleak looking skies it did little to abate the activities and excitement of the people of Camellia. Though the big city didn't know much in way of rest today was especially abuzz with activity as the people had all filed into the new - several year old - Aspect Stadium, the main hub for all things Blue Rose would be broadcast. The reason was simple. Today was a day for introductions, for promotion and for showcasing. Each and every duelist partaking in the Blue Rose tournament had been called to the new - though in reality five year old - Aspect Stadium; the building where all duels for Blue Rose would be held. All thirty two of them were to listen to the announcer for the event tell them all that was expected for the tournament. The rules, code of conduct, the long and storied tradition and history of the both the tournament and the sport. And finally for the viewers at home a short introduction of each of the players, simply stating all of their names, decks and what province they were representing. When all was said and done, the group was dismissed from the tournament hall and free to go about their business.
Upon exiting the stadium proper, they would see a crowd of people who had all been waiting for them, some fans of the sport and some reporters and journalists looking to interview the duelists. Naturally some of the participants were more popular than others, last year's third place being swarmed the moment that she had left the building, and they would deal with their fans and crowds in their own way. The group of tournament participants would be able to spend the rest of their free time however they wished for the day, knowing full well that tomorrow was the start of the games proper.
Iris, for her part, didn't particularly feel in the mood to do any press for herself as well. Smiling and waving to all the people who had called out to her, Iris merely continued her way forward and managed to get past all of them. Looking up to the sky the girl frowned, thinking that the gray skies wasn't the best of omens for the coming tournament. Not to mention it was neither sunny nor raining, making her ever present parasol nothing more than a fashionable accessory. Sighing to herself, the girl continued to walk into the unfamiliar city proper, thinking that surely there was something to pass the time with.
