Ash 237 Posted February 27, 2021 Torm plays Abandonware. Today I’m playing “The Fall: Last Days of Gaia”. My first image when launching the game is this. Main menu looks unassuming but the theme song on the other hand… The Fall: Last Days of Gaia - Theme - YouTube Let’s just say this wasn’t what I was expecting, but I’m pleasantly surprised. A google of this game will give you the following blurb – “The Fall: Last Days Of Gaia is a role-playing video game that takes place in a post apocalyptic world. The game was developed by Silver Style Entertainment and published by Deep Silver in 2004.[1] German Gothic Metal Band Darkseed wrote the song The Fall for the game, which was used on the trailer. The song was later featured on their 2005 album Ultimate Darkness.” So off to a great start, a theme created by a “Gothic Metal Band” and a post-apocalyptic RPG. Sounds like a great combination to me. From what I’ve seen this has been labelled as “German Fallout” so let’s get into it. This game only released in German so I’m using a fan translation patch to English so some of the dialogue might be wonky, but I’ll use some translations from guides if anything seems odd. When you press the “Start” button you get taken to this screen… Very descriptive but the power button is flickering so… time to press it. It starts beeping and then this man appears on my phone screen. By pressing the arrow keys on the phone, I can cycle portraits so let me pick one out… I picked this man; he looks too cool to not pick. Clicking the tick fades to black and then after a loading screen I’m just here without any explanation. On a side note, to further prove how cool I am: Anyhow I can move about with WASD or right click locations, so I guess I’ll walk towards the town and see what’s what. First dialogue and well, clearly this is the post-apocalyptic world because someone’s being executed. I tell the man that I want to be a Mercenary in this “New Government” and after a couple more lines of dialogue he tells me to go speak to the president who is in town near the execution stand. So, I make my way there, a man gets his head chopped off by Madame guillotine. NOT THE TRADITIONAL SPITTING ON THE BEHEADED. You get the picture regardless but there’s a man behind the whole scene with a little white arrow above his head so I can only assume that this is the president. I was correct. The guy that was killed was a murderer and not long after asking the president gives me full reign to become a mercenary for the NEW GOVERNMENT. Clearly background checks aren’t a thing in the post-apocalyptic wastes of Germany. So I need to talk to Lucas, so let me see if I can find him. Tada! Game genius me, anyhow based on these dialogue options I’m guessing this is where I “create my character”, I guess to get an understanding of the game I’ll fill the form out myself and do it properly. Character sheet! Let me fill this in to be the most comedic I could possibly be, because all blogs must have some form of humour in them* (citation needed) Oh Anyhow overall this is what I came up with Gregg is good with guns because America = guns, he’s also pretty but sucks at lockpicking, he is however good at talking and medication though. After creating my character sheet, I was greeted by President Hayes once more who gives us a little back story of the place. Off to find Wesley I suppose. After finding Wesley I phased through some crates Turns out I know Wesley! That’s pretty good news, always good to have someone you know around. It also just so happens that everyone we knew died, including our family… I wasn’t hoping for a cheery time, but this is certainly a dark start. Turns out our sister(?) Is missing and hasn’t been seen since the attack, I suspect this will play into something later in the game? Our first assignment is to lead a group of people to kill a bunch of raiders, turns out these are the raiders that killed our family and such. CONVIENENT! And the first plan of action is to find a man called David who has some intel on the Ratskull Gang, after a bit of dialogue I am to chose up to 5 people to join my group. A few more character sheets but I’ll take pictures of the ones I take. Good at lockpicking and pickpocketing so no harm having them join. I AM HEAVY WEAPONS GUY AND MY NAME BUTCH. Good driver and hand to hand combat expert. Good medic so no harm having her either. Good with snipers and heavy weapons so I like. German smash brothers nice, anyway everyone is here and now I’m set to go and complete my mission. I make my way out of town and chose the next location which is the “Rat skull Dropout”. Nice I found where this “David” lives… Oh, the hut exploded. Turns out the Ratskull boys are the ones that blew the place up and David is being harassed by them. These people are stereotypical bad raiders and If I assume, I’m going to rescue him. Thankfully this evil guy is going to give the good guy some time to stay alive a little longer… just enough for me to come to the rescue! COMBAT BEGIN We won but two of my guys were doing nothing so… clearly gotta figure it out a little more. So yeah, this is David, and he wants me to rescue his daughter. As good heroes we shall do just that! Gregg being his typical comedic self… This little village is being attacked and I’m here to offer sound strategic advice. Looks like Sara has disappeared now (David’s daughter) and we have to go and find her as well. Might as well call me inspector gadget at this point. Whilst I was looking around the area trying to find this gang I stumbled across a trader, so time to do some trading… He didn’t really want anything, and I don’t have anything of value to trade so… on I go. I tried to shoot at him and steal his stuff, but I ended up nearly killing Butch, poor Butch. There was a cutscene with the ratskulls back at town, so I ran back and then started engaging in Mortal Kombat. Ivana and Gregg died and the last autosave was before the house explosion, so I’m going to take a break from gameplay for a little bit. There’s a lot going on in this game but the mechanics don’t exactly make themselves obvious and I’m guessing I missed out on something for this fight because there was a discussion about taking C4 that I didn’t take or something of that sort… if people are interested I can carry on playing this and make another post or I can try something else!
