Premise

Spoiler

The janitor grumbled to himself as he entered the third floor bathroom. He had been getting complaints about it all day but couldn't do anything until later that night after everyone had gone. And of course, it being the middle of winter, it was already dark. The lights flickered, yet another thing he'd have to fix "As if I already don't do more than I'm paid for", as he stepped inside. "Probably some kid stuffed something they weren't supposed to have in the toilet and got it clogged. Again."

He opened up the stall and frowned at the offending toilet. At least it wasn't overflowing this time. As he propped the stall door open the lights gave out and he was plunged into darkness. "Goddammit, this whole place is falling apart." He wasn't about to try and fix the toilet in the dark but he pulled out his flashlight anyway, not wanting to trip and land face first onto the germ infested floors. "Guess I should check the light first after all," he said with a sigh. Then he turned the flashlight on.

His scream was cut off almost as soon as it began leaving his mouth.

The lights came back on. The janitor was nowhere to be seen. His flashlight laying, cracked, on the floor was the only sign someone had been standing there.

The only sound to be heard was a gurgling noise coming from inside the toilet.

How do you do fellow RPers. I had this brain-worm for a bit and I decided I'd try it out. What is it? Well, basically, I wanted to do a paranormal RP. One where the characters would be tasked with investigating and putting a stop to various paranormal events happening around a non-specifically-large-city. The catch? You're all just regular people. The only weapons you have to face these things are whatever you can feasibly get your hands on. Though there will be a boon in the form of seals given by the mysterious person who sends you on these missions that can ever so slightly even the playing field.

But for the most part it will be regular folk having to deal with spooky and dangerous happenings. Something that I don't think has really been tried a whole lot in RP here. Both the horror aspect (which I can't promise to be a master of but I can do my best) and the lack of any actual special powers.

So if you'd like to give it a try lemme know. If you're confused about anything and want it clarified before stating interest feel free to ask.

Premise (Expanded)

Spoiler

To go into a bit more detail. Your character will be someone who had experienced an intense paranormal happening and would have died if not for the help of a mysterious person. Said mysterious person contacted you later to get your help in stopping more such happenings, as it seems to be getting more frequent.

What this actually entails is going to the location, finding where the entity is, and placing seals either around or on the entity (depending on strength of entity). Sometimes these seals are all it takes but other times it forces the entity into a somewhat physical state where they must be put down with more conventional means.

You'll be provided with some equipment but nothing major. Obviously you can't have explosives, except perhaps on rare occasion, and so on so you'll have to make due with what you can get your hands on.

Rules

Spoiler

1. Usual RP rules apply

2. I want somewhat consistent posting. If you are waiting for someone to post first let them know and if it goes on too long post anyway. I will kick those who are consistently holding others back.

3. Character death is possible but realistically it will only happen if you really screw up or stop posting at a bad time.

4. The tone is largely serious but that isn't to say you can't be silly at times, and doesn't mean I won't be either, just a warning that if you intend to goof off most of the time this RP likely won't fit well.

5. I will be pretty strict on "power level" shall we say. There are no special abilities to be had and if I find your character is doing too much superhuman feats will discuss it with you.

Setting

Spoiler

Marinton - A somewhat large city located next to the sea. It's known for its large shipyard and hunting spots. Besides being near the sea it also sports a forest on the edge of the city, with a lake at its center, and off in the distance can be seen a snowy mountain. The weather tends to be cold and wet often.

Mysterious Person

Spoiler

Art by Wada Kazu

The main NPC. The person who saved each player at some point and essentially assigns jobs to them. They go by Shiki and use "we" pronouns, but doesn't mind what you use for them. Quite small, at 4'10" they also weigh much more than you'd expect if you ever got a chance to pick them up for whatever reason.

They don't seem to have any special abilities except having decent amount of resources and ability to make seals to weaken entities and they speak with a flat tone at all times.

Not much else is known about them and they don't directly interact much of the time, preferring to speak via phone/radio or via VHS tapes they leave for the players.

Tell Me A Story

Spoiler
Spoiler

“Every ghost story is one I’ve heard before. There is nothing new under the sun. Just because some of them happen to be true doesn’t change that.”

Name: Brian James Trantor
Age: 26
Pronouns: he/him
Job: Post-Graduate Anthropology Student
Skills: Brian can read a few different dead languages relatively well and can speak a little bit too. His best is Latin, but runes, hieroglyphs, and various scripts (demotic, cuniform) are not off the table. He also swam competitively in high school. He never reached the upper echelons of aquatic movement, but he does know how to do a butterfly stroke, which surely is worth something.

Appearance:

Spoiler

sample_1471a990782cf1493f3f9ffbebed1bffe

Brian tends to dress business casually on all occasions, even events that might necessitate a more formal appearance. At best, he might put on a fancier jacket. The messenger bag he always carries around with him has a Tintin pin and the pin of a band you haven't heard of on it. He stands at 5'11" (180cm) and weighs about 170 pounds (77 kg)

Personality:

Spoiler
Spoiler

Brian is one of those college students that still believes that he, personally, is going to change the world. It’s the sort of naïveté that blinds oneself to the actual realities of the world, whether that includes supernatural occurrences or not. It’s also a worldview that inherently shrinks one’s perception of the world. To Brian Trantor, the world is all about Brian Trantor. He’s such a know-it-all too. Brian is the sort of person you don’t want on a trivia team because he goes with an immediate gut answer and vehemently insists it’s correct in the face of all but the most determined argument. He might be better than a coin flip there, but that doesn’t make him any more engaging to play with.

That stubbornness can also manifest as a virtue, however. That bull-headed devotion is what has kept him going down his academic track, and despite his holier-than-thou statements about the unoriginality of more contemporary works, that doesn’t make him any less fascinated by any sort of story. When Brian is properly entertained, all that acerbity fades away, leaving behind a dork who loves what life has offered him -- a “make lemonade” situation without any of the sourness involved. All of Brian’s friends -- few as they are -- are storytellers, and though he is their harshest critic, he, at least, finds their company worth it. Perhaps the best words to hear out of him are, “Tell it to me again.”

There's one niggling fear Brian has and that's being forgotten. Whether he rubs off on you the right way or the wrong way, Brian Trantor wants to be remembered, and he's willing to go to great lengths to achieve that, whether that's strong first impressions or just texting people random factoids to remind them of his existence.

Biography:

Spoiler
Spoiler

It was a stupid bet anyway. Like, he knew it was a stupid bet when he took it on and hindsight only made the bet stupider. Marinton University library was a massive thing that, though it technically closed around midnight every night and didn’t reopen until six in the morning, had no way to actually force anyone out when the door’s automatic locks engaged. This was a feature normally taken advantage of by the desperate, whenever finals week rolled around and pitiful little undergraduates talked themselves into pulling an all-nighter, but the foolish, courageous, and foolishly courageous were not immune. The University library also had a legend attached, a haunting contained within its thirteen floors. At three o’clock in the morning, as soon as the clocks rolled over into the Witching Hour, the southeastern staircase stretched downwards, adding an extra basement, and another, and another. Depending on the storyteller, it might not even have a bottom.

The bet was this: Brian and the one friend who had dared him into this were going to meet in the library after hours, and explore the additional library floors together. The first one to chicken out and head back up lost. In the first basement -- the only one the library was supposed to have -- an accomplice was supposed to leap out from behind a bookshelf and give Brian payback for some slight. Nobody had expected the story to actually be true. Instead of stopping at the basement, Brian continued downwards, and downwards still, skipping past other, more ethereal doors, obsessed with depth and nothing else.

At the third basement, his friend gave up, giving the game away and refusing to continue. They called the bet off, but Brian barely even heard them, so single-minded was he in the exploration of the legend. When he rounded a corner to the next flight of stairs, his friend disappeared both out of sight and out of mind.

At the fifth basement, Brian started to hear an ethereal hum just behind him. He thought it was his friend bringing back the prank, and so paid it as much mind as he thought it was worth. At the seventh basement, he saw that the doors to the actual floors had opened up, and the hum had turned to actual words, little whispers in the back of his mind saying, “Come inside. Come inside.” Passing that one by was more difficult, but he kept his goal in mind. Each step further only made the whispers louder. It wasn’t a request, it was a demand. “Come inside! Come inside!”

At the entrance to the eighth floor, where he likely could have born it no longer, where he might have visited whatever damnable room had been prepared for him, he met Shiki, who dispelled the voice with thirteen words: “If you go any further, you will not be able to come back.” It was enough to snap Brian back to his senses.

That was a month ago. Brian’s obsession with the mythical bottom of the library still remains, but now he’s found himself under Shiki’s employ, which between that and his actual thesis he needs to defend one of these days, is enough to keep his mind occupied. Still, when the night is at its quietest, he can still hear that hum and the faintest of whispers beckoning him deeper into the earth. “Come inside. Come inside.”

Other:

  • Brian says he doesn’t believe in astrology but he also knows more about his star chart than most probably should.
  • The strange event in his bio is inspired by SCP-087
  • don't call him bj he won't give you one thanks

One look at Carmen and one would think she's been dealing with ghosts all of her life. Constantly looking over shoulder, anxious and pessimistic Carmen has a tendency things that can go wrong will. Paranoid she acts as if there's something or someone always out there to get her. As a result, she tends to be nervous when dealing with just about anyone and swings between mumbling to talking far too loud, talking too little or too much, and constantly survey the area she's in as well as look a person as if she were sizing them up. All of this is capped off with a tendency to lie to appease someone, though fold under the slightest pressure, as well as having a morbid sense of humor.

Despite thinking that everything is more or less out to get her, Carmen doesn't have an issue taking on new things. Or rather, she doesn't find new scary things any more scary then routinely scary things. Sure, she finds some degree of comfort in going about a regular routine and getting from point A to B in her day with no unforeseen complications. And sure, she has a habit of meeting any new situation with gloom, doom, and some form of protest. But regardless of all of that she still has a tendency to see whatever she starts to the end. After all, failing is generally scarier to her then not, and sometimes she finds a joy at the end of this, panic like one would akin to an experience from a horror movie or thrill ride. Sometimes.

Ghost hunting is not one of those joys. However, she believes that it is more frightening to just sit around and wait for a ghost to murder her then it is to not. And Shiki scares her to an extent as well.

Biography:

Spoiler

Carmen had always been an anxious girl. She's always felt uncomfortable in large gatherings and always felt a strange sense of dread in everything she did and every place she was. Despite this her life had actually been fairly normal. She went to school, she graduated, she went to college, she graduated, she moved out and she got a job. While in school she discovered an interest in art, and using it as a medium to calm herself with and deal with her paranoia that way. While in college one of her, rare, friends noticed her skill and told her she could try and market that and after a good deal of prodding and help she set up her own commission business. Once she graduated her parents were planning to move and Carmen, not wanting to leave the only place she knew, decided to move out. And in order to sustain herself, as artwork certainly wasn't going to cut it, she got a job at a convenience store, gotten solely because of ease of getting the job with no thought into what the job actually was. And, though she was not at all suited for customer service, the past year the girl had found herself in a comfortable enough groove with her life. And then the disaster she had always dread happening struck.

One night Carmen was left to work a closing shift. As the night began winding down and barely any customers actually came in, one that Carmen hadn't noticed enter was perusing around. The customer was rather messy in appearance, having long unkempt and old tattered looking clothing as well as just poor skin in general. Carmen didn't wish to bother them at first, but as closing was coming around they had no choice but to approach the stranger and tell them it was time to go. As they did, the customer began to act as if they were reading off of a shopping lost, saying the name of various foods and items. Unsure what to do the girl had shied away at first before telling them to go to a grocery store nearby instead, only for the customer to continue repeating the items more and more, faster and louder each time. Thinking she was out of her depth in dealing with someone clearly insane, Carmen went to go call someone but found both her own phone and the store phone no longer functioning. She tried to flee but found the previously unlocked door unmoving.

The customer then, repeating its words over and over again, began to slowly creep towards the girl. Unable to escape Carmen began to run, only to find the customer start to twitch as it moved and its movement growing faster and faster, clearly intent on pursuing the girl, it's utterances becoming more akin to vicious moans and howls, and Carmen was finally able to get a look at its face. Or rather, the swirling black void where its face should have been. Thinking that she was about to die, the girl sprinted to a storage closet and closed herself inside as a last ditch effort to live. The door buckled as the creature supposedly threw itself against it, and from the noise and force she could tell that it was trying to tear apart the door and most likely would. As she finally resigned herself to her fate, though, the banging stopped. And then a much different, and more coherent, voice told her it was safe to come out. Terrified still, Carmen continued to stay in the closet until she finally could hear nothing on the other side. Opening it, she was face to face with what she presumed to be the monsters killer, Shiki.

That was two weeks ago, and now through a twist of fate that Carmen had never wanted she now works under the mysterious individual to resolve paranormal activities.

The Korova region, being much less tourist friendly than other regions, isn't one that many people travel to in this day and age. It wasn't prepared to take in visitors with much pomp and circumstances. It did however have one thing going for it when it came to visitors from other regions and that was New Point Landing.
Located at the western edge of an island, which was itself to the west of the mainland, New Point Landing was the main place for visitors coming into the region and it, at least, had a dock that ships could stop at to drop of passengers which was more than can be said about most of the rest of the region.
Once upon a time the city was the place to go for trading and shopping. These days it has fallen far from its high point and many of the stores are closed and boarded up. Awaiting a day that the region was more prosperous. Many of the remaining stores were family-run and managed by stubborn folk who refused to let the city fall completely off of its original purpose. There existed a singular, larger, department store where the rare visitors were able to get most necessities for their travels.
The ship that was currently coming into the dock was different than most that the city would usually see. It resembled a cruise ship more than anything else and instead of supplies from other regions it instead was full of trainers.
Unbeknownst to the people of the city, nor truly the trainers themselves, these passengers included those who would be much more precious to the region than any other cargo. For these trainers were destined to take part in a struggle that would determine the fate of the entire region.
Pokemon trainers from across the world all coming here with the purpose of taking on the Pokemon League challenge and becoming the Champion that the region has been lacking for many long years.

Anneliese looked out at the city that approached. Her eyes were shining with excitement as she watched the city, much different than Sunnyshore City back home, came closer and closer. "My goodness Leopold, how do you think the ship knows when to stop without any eyes?" She asked the small, lion-cub-like, Shinx that was currently standing next to her and watching with great concern as she leaned over the edge of the railing with no regard to her own safety.
The Pokemon had no answer for her. He didn't have any more knowledge than she did about ships and he wouldn't be able to bring himself to correct her if he did.
This didn't stop the girl from continuing her dialogue with the small creature. "Oh look over there, that's Goldeen right? My goodness there's so many of them. Leopold do you see them right there?" She leaned over the edge to point out the Pokemon swimming along the side of the boat. In doing so she went too far and very nearly tumbled off the edge.
Only stopped by Leopold biting the bottom of her dress and pulling the girl backwards. She stumbled but managed to avoid falling as she looked down at Leopold. "Oh, what's wrong?" She asked, oblivious to how she had almost fell into the water. "Did you want something to eat?"
Leopold shook his head and wondered where the other humans that he had gathered to keep an eye on her were. He could do most of it himself but when Anneliese was this excited sometimes it could get...difficult. When the captain had informed them they would be required to set off in groups of three, for safety reasons, Leopold at first blanched at the idea of trusting strangers to accompany his trainer but he realized that it was something he'd have to accept. As long as they kept Anneliese safe and happy, of course.
      ---
As the ship docked everyone would be helped off of it by the crew. They were greeted by a tall middle-aged, man with mutton chops of such grandeur that they were nearly indistinguishable from a full beard. "Hello, and welcome...to Korova! I got word of your arrival and sallied forth to greet you! I am the dockmaster here, and I wish to be the first to welcome you all to my fair city, the jewel of this region, in my eyes at least, New Point Landing. I'm sure you'll find it accommodating to your needs...You may not even want to leave, gwahahahaha!"
"Oh what a delightful man!" Anneliese said as she smiled brightly at him. She wanted to stop and chat with the pleasant man some more but another part of her wished to hurry off to begin her adventure.
It was then she remembered that she had teammates with her and so she turned to the two of them with an even bigger smile, "So, where shall we start?"

And so it begins anew once again
The Korova Region. A more untamed region than most in the world; it was always a place of great interest to strong trainers. With its vast wilderness and general lack of contact with the other regions it was perfect for trainers to grow and learn about themselves. However in the recent years it has grown more restless. The Champion had vanished without a trace and a group of criminals, Team Phoenix, have become more active. The Pokemon League decided that they needed a new Champion to help bring peace of mind to the people of the region. Thus they sent out invitations far and wide to try and gather trainers, and bring them to the region free of charge, to take on their Pokemon League challenge.
You are one of a group who, for one reason or another, decided to come to this land for the great opportunity of becoming the region's new Champion. Some goals may differ but one thing is certain: the trainers who come to Korova are destined to change it forever.

It, like every night, was dark. However it wasn't stormy. Instead it was cold and somewhat clammy. The time was 10 PM and, unlike some larger cities, the streets were mostly barren. The moon in the sky, and the streetlights on the ground, made the dark night possible to traverse without being blind.
They, in this case being Brian James Trantor and Carmen O'Conner, had gotten a message not long ago. It was from their mysterious savior/employer, Shiki. This was unusual, the first of several unusual moments, as the girl hardly ever used text messages to contact them. Though it was only a couple words, "Dagen Park" which was why they both had made their way towards said park.
Park might be something of an exaggeration. it was rather large, it would only take a couple minutes to cross it, and only had a singular bench, under an old gazebo, to sit in. Some trees were scattered around, mostly around the edge to the left facing from the street, but not many and only one or two that were truly large. A playground sat in the center of the small grassy field which consisted of a couple slides, monkey bars, and a bit of a distance from that a pair of seesaws and a swing set that creaked with the slight breeze. Off to the side of said playground, at the right edge of the park, was a concrete area for parking. And there sat a singular vehicle.
They each would recognize it as belonging to Shiki. A large van, practically a camper, that looked like it shouldn't be able to run. Yet they knew it did. Usually, yet another unusual thing tonight, this van was parked outside of their houses, or wherever they happened to be when Shiki wanted to contact them, and they'd use it to get to whatever Shiki needed them to do.
However this time it was in another location. The reason why was clear to them soon.
The third unusual thing of the night. Whenever they found said van they were the only ones who ever paid it any mind. However today there was another. For Brian this was Carmen. And for Carmen this was Brian.
Without any warning it seemed that Shiki had decided that the two of them would meet tonight. In this park. On this cold and clammy night.
