If you could only play three games

Recommended Posts

So a little hypothetical. If you could only play three video games for the rest of your life what ones would it be and why?

Please avoid things like World of Warcraft and League of Legends if you can...And basically don't try and "solve" this  by picking the most packed with content things. Unless that's actually what you'd prefer to play over and over of course.

I feel like you were thinking of a certain super-charming Gatorade enthusiast when you said this. But I'm actually assuming you just mean grind-heavy games that don't really have an endgame to speak of. Guess that means I can't say Crossout or Minecraft. That's unfortunate, since those were two of my picks.

I pick Dead Cells, Sid Meier's Civilization V, and Pokémon Black 2 in that case. Dead Cells because although it does have an endgame (sorta kinda, more than WoW anyway), each run's level layouts and equipment are randomized, so you can play it over and over again forever and get new experiences every time. It also gets updated every once in a while with new content; it's gotten one new patch since release (which was really more of a balancing patch) with another slowly closing in. Civ V for the same reason; the AI civs and maps are random every time, though the experience is a bit more controlled than the chaos that is Dead Cells.

And Black 2 because I'm a bit of a shitter abusing a loophole that will probably get shot down once I point it out. You never said the games couldn't be run on an emulator, meaning I can play it on desmume after I run the game through a randomizer to - you guessed it - make every run a different experience.

What about randomizers? Like A Link to the Past (alttp) randomizers. Technically all are alttp but with randomization customizations it's practically a different game every time you generate a new one.

Any open-world game with plenty of missions, collectibles, and rewards for discovery. Skyrim and Witcher 3 come to mind. I can see myself spending so much more time on those two games considering how my playtime pales in comparison to others. Hell, I have nearly 100 hours on Skyrim and my strongest character isn't even level 30 yet. Same with Witcher 3. I had to start a NG+ playthrough just to try and do more stuff in the world and even then I managed to skimp out on it.

Not too sure about a third game, though. Having thousands of hours of playtime on games is not really my thing, so perhaps if there's nothing else to do in the games I mentioned, I would just give up gaming entirely and find something else to do with my life. lol

Dead Cells

Final Fantasy Tactics

Apex Legends

Weird mix but all fill a great niche for me, and besides FFT is my favourite game of all time, if I can cheat and include all the rom hacks too then it's all I ever need baby.

What about... Super Mario Maker? It isn't actually packed with that much content... Until the players upload... Their shit. But I would play their shit 'til the end of time if the servers would let me. Well, even just off of what we've seen so far, I'm moreso talking about Mario Maker 2.

And the randomizer question would definitely stand but I would probably say Emerald regardless knowing how much I played as a kid anyway, and I can really truly go at that Battle Frontier.

I guess there is always the issue of that one specific iteration getting the servers shut down, despite that would not be the case for Wow or the like, I'm not interested in them.

So even without randomizer or extra content, I will cheat out a little... Pokémon Emerald, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (Wii U ver), and I'm gonna be honest. Atm, the isn't a single non-Nintendo game I would rather play with such limited options the rest of my life they make them much more repayable for my tastes. I could get close and be kinda cheap again with certain trilogies (woooh!), but gonna go with Super Mario 64. Got the right amount of difficulty beacause I'm so not used to how vintage it is as a 3D game (had a PlayStation at the time), and I had a blast any time I played/watched it so far anyway that I can just tell it would work for this.

Background Color stupidly changed on mobile, had to remove that

Skyrim, Magic Arena, and probably Smash Ultimate. Skyrim because of how much I can mod it and enjoy the game whenever I want because of the additional content. Magic Arena because I jam that shit an hour+ everyday. Smash because it is something to do when I am board.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate - I need to fuel my Smash fix that's been going strong since 2002.

Pokémon SoulSilver - The Johto games still have the best post-game IMO. Emerald and Y would be close seconds.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door - It's my favorite game, so I'd want to be able to play it from time to time. I do that now and it's like I never left.

For me it's rough because I'm torn between preferences and replay-ability.

I was debating a Fire Emblem game but honestly after thinking about it idk if I could play a single one forever. I put in hundreds of hours into Sacred Stones but the others unsure. Awakening is pretty replay-able and there's multiple ways to play it. Fates is probably the most replay-able technically but it's also not that good.

I need to have a Pokemon game I replay them all pretty regularly. But which one? I don't know for sure. BW is my favorite but idk if I could play it over and over. BW2 is a good choice but I still am unsure I'd want to go through it all a lot.

Oddly Might have to go with Soul Silver for a mixture of being good, being not too much a hassle to go through, and content.

For the other games...Soul Calibur 4 probably. While I love Chronicles of the Sword I prefer almost everything else about 4. I still haven't gotten through that tower either so there's still goals to reach.

And last one I'm thinking Custom Robo: Arena. It's a fun and simple game. I enjoy replaying it. And there's many ways of playing the game.

This is a lot harder than expected.

Pokemon: Soul Silver (Or Black 2)
Soul Calibur 4
Custom Robo Arena

Shout out to Halo: Reach which I love the firefight mode of though. Might swap the last one out for that so I can play a shooter too.

Resident Evil 4 is the one story-based game I'm sure I could replay again and again. Satisfying to kill, new game +, and unlike 5 and 6 it still retains some of the HORROR that Resident Evil should have.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was the first turnbased RPG I had the patience to play near to completion. I could put Earthbound in this spot, but Thousand-Year Door I felt had more interesting characters. Game also has nice story, great music, and decent gameplay (I'm very picky with turnbased RPGs, so I don't care for most).

Overwatch if possible, since I love the characters with their varying playstyles, aesthetics, and personalities.

Otherwise

Almost any Kingdom Hearts game (If I must narrow it down, 358/2 Days as it's the only one I've played to completion so far)

Oh well, to answer the question:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - I like Smash games, everyone is in this version, this is my top pick any day.
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Randomizer - A new adventure every time, with a lot of strategy behind it. Customizations and updates keep it spicy.
Mario Maker 2 - Has yet to be released but can't go wrong with more customization options. If I had tons of fun with a fanmade version of it that precedes the first Mario Maker, then the 2nd iteration of an official Maker ought to be much more entertaining.

Runner ups are Super Mario RPG, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Zelda: Majora's Mask for their replay value, but doubt they would entertain me more than the above 3 would do.

Hmm... this definitely has a different weight than just "what are your favorite games", huh?  If I could only play 3 games, I'd probably almost never play video games period, just because my interests would probably rarely align with each game for any significant length of time to be worthwhile.  But in any case...

1. Age of Empires 2 definitely.  I return to it enough to 100% make it one of the main choices, even if my interest only holds for a few weeks at any one time.

2. *the latest* Smash Bros game.  The individual name of the game would change if the smash series keeps growing, but for now this would be Ultimate.  This fills in as both a social game and a fighting game.

3. I dunno, probably Maplestory?  I never got into WoW and I've only played Skyrim a few times in my life, but Maplestory fills a similar itch while also being a game that I'm really familiar with, gives me nostalgia, and I jump back into every few months or so.

I'd still be missing large chunks of games that I like, one of the main genres being tactical rpgs (I was REALLY close to putting Final Fantasy Tactics over Maplestory here).  I play a lot of the yugioh games too, but with the restriction I could play YGO in real life, so I wouldn't waste a top 3 slot on it.  Pokemon would be annoying to give up (especially as Crystal is my favorite game of all time), but I tend to never finish them anymore so they're out. Platformers, Puzzles, and Racing games are fun, but I don't play 'em enough to bump the top 3.

I honestly don't understand the restrictions here. Is this not the point of the question? You only have 3 games you can ever play, so which 3 can you get the most sustained enjoyment out of? Games that are heavily packed with content is supposed to be how you answer it, isn't it? And I'm assuming the first half of the restriction just means don't pick a multiplayer game.

I don't even know if my 3 picks would be cheating in this thread or not but here I guess:

1. Terraria - Assuming I have access to mods, and even without, this game would last me forever. Helps me fulfill what little need I have to build stuff. Would be nice if I could multiplayer though but no big loss.

2. Sengoku Rance - For a porn RTS game this one is honestly just so fun. And there's so many routes and things to do and there's even a free-for-all mode.

3. i guess Yakuza 0 is pretty cool

The restriction is cause I've seen people when given similar questions choose games just because they never technically end and not because it's what they'd want to play forever (in a "haha i got you" way) and I wanted to see if I could get more in depth answer. Hence the latter part. Where if those are actually the games you'd enjoy most it's fine.
