I mean, I've got extensive experience in commander and limited, so those would be what I would be able to write the most informed pieces on. Mostly I'd just want to write something that someone would find interesting.

Here's the thing, though. Commander and limited are already very much written about topics, take any "blog" or content page. So, unless you're writing something that you want to talk about, does it really matter if someone gives you a topic? I can probably find something on any question I have, when it comes to play commander or limited. So, really, I would focus on the topics you want to cover and see how much you are able to write, then try to navigate what people think about it.

This is a huge reason I stopped writing, was because there was not really a draw into the theoretical position in competitive MTG. Even my last article I wrote or my last major project I worked on, many of my readers wanted to hear about the decks I was playing instead of how or what I was trying to build into on the side of competition.
