  1. "So Ash, you've been doing patrols for a while huh? Ever seen anything out there? Where are we even going for that matter?"

"Nothing. This Island seems to be just a dead ball of rock. You can never be too careful, though. As for where we're going-"

"He has no idea." Noah interjected. Ash seemed to visibly deflate.

"Yes." He growled a bit. "I don't actually know. We will probably have to leave son. Maybe search for leads on another island."

"I asked the ship- did you know she can talk? She doesn't have any solid leads, either. Wonder if-"

This time, Noah was the one interrupted. Not by Ashardalon though. Instead everyone on deck's eyes were drawn to the sky as a sparkling, silver shooting star streaked across the sky fro out of the data stream. At first Noah was silent because he was distracted by how pretty it was, but then it got larger, and closer, and the awe turned to fear, then relief as it passed barely a few hundred feet over their heads. It was nearly perfectly round and crystaline, not at all like what Noah imagined a meteor would look like. Weirder still its tail was in fact not debris being ejected off of it, but rather... flames?"

    "A rocket?!"

Ash was right. It was a rocket! Noah barely had time to process this before it impacted the island perhaps a mile or two away, on the other side of a high ridge. The island shook from the explosive impact, so much so that everyone aboard almost lost their footing.

    "Well, there's something to see."

"Lets go check it out. If anyone was aboard they're probably going to need our help!" Before anyone could respond or go after him, Ash jumped over the railing and down to the ground. He ran off as fast as he could, having completely forgotten that they were aboard a boat that could fly. Noah looked Orianne, wondering whether they should go after him or get below decks and help get Aegis ready to go.

    "Hmmmwaaaah!"

Kuribohrn responded to Gabby the same way he responded to, well, everything. Then he added to it by tipping his hat to her, only to remember that the hat was what was keeping him aloft as he fell toward the ground. He hurriedly put it back on before he crash landed, and hovered back up to eye level with her, playing it off like nothing had happened.

"She wanted to get us all to have happy thoughts so we could use duel space to stop the monsters. I don't know how, but it's duel space I'm sure it'll work out." Jun waved that last comment aside before brightening up and gesturing to the sky, "so yes! Welcome to our great starlit palace of happy thoughts! Be sure to have fun and happy!"

"Happy thoughts, huh?" Yushiro said, scratching his chin for a moment. As strange as it sounded, that was exactly what seemed to be happening around them, and it was working quite well! Sure, there were some stray monsters who found it wise to try and make a move against the students, but any that weren't promptly dealt with by Gabriela's collection of Skull Servants would meet an equally swift defeat at the hands of the various HEROs Souji had assembled for his own display. Quite the successful defense!

"Gonna join in or what? I don't see any good thoughts in here."

"You know what?" Yushiro thought back, a sly little grin appearing on his face. Quickly, he flipped through his deck and took a couple of monster cards out. As he did, the sky above started to take on a slightly more blueish tint, and if one looked closely they could see gold lines running through it.

    Kazu.png

"What did you just do?" Kazu asked as he glared at the fit, well built teenager who was presently putting on a Blue Yonder uniform in front of him. The other boy finished stuffing himself into the sweater, his spiky red hair poking out of the top like some sort of fiery hedgehog for a moment before he spoke.

"Hey prettyboy. Just livening things up a bit, is all."

"The macro disk is not to be tampered with, you know that."

"Relax Kaz. Its just level limit area B. Wouldn't wanna make things too easy for the kiddies."

"I set up the macro disc with mystic piper precisely because the situation would be easy to defuse. We can't afford to overtax it and risk a malfunction- it was designed to work in Ichor, not Ambrosia."

"Same damn thing. That's why we're here in the first place. Besides, its not gonna break from one extra spell card."

"We can't be certain of that."

"You worry too much. And what's it matter anyway?"

"It might cause more damage than I intended."

"Good." A predatory slash crossed Trey's face. "Give em a taste of what home was like."

"Why Chou placed her trust in a bloodthirsty brute like you, I'll never understand."

"Because." He walked forward and placed his hand on Kazu's shoulder, gripping it too tightly for it to be at all pleasant. "Even after everything you two had to go through, you're still too soft to do what needs to be done. You're a weakling, and why she makes an exception for you, I'll never know."

Kazu brushed his hand off. "There is more than one way to show strength. She's always been able to recognize that. You, apparently, still can't. But fine, you can have it your way. Attempting to dissuade you is a fool's errand anyway."

"You've learned to pick your battles, at least. Good. Now lets get outta here."

    mqYjeXr.png

    "Wait, what are you-"

"Synchro Summon! Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!" Yushiro called out, going through the summoning motions on his borrowed duel disk, and expelling Zetsuei from his mind and out into reality. The dragon appeared above the gathered crowd, roaring angrily. There was more to it than just getting back at his companion, though. Yushiro had summoned him above them for a specific purpose, and as the light from Melissa's duel field began to shine upon his wings, it became clear. Reflected and refracted through Zetsuei's crystalline wings, the light shone in a beautiful rainbow of colors, bathing the whole area in a spectacular brilliance that seemed to energize everything it touched.

"Yes!" He shouted. "With all these people here, looks like the duel field can even support something as big as Clear Wing!"  He flashed a thumbs up in Melissa's direction and called over to her. "Hey! Your plan's working great!"

Or at least, it was. Until a deafening and prolonged toot could be heard from within the procession of duel monsters making its way through the area. The mob stopped, and after two shorter toots, split open to make way for what must have been the leader. He sure didn't look like a leader.

He looked more like a clown, what with that strange blue hair, his gaudy outfit, but most important was the shiny golden flute he was carrying as if his life depended on it. Once he had stepped fully out of the crowd, he gave the assembled students an introductory bow, but his cheery expression didn't do much to hide some frustrated body language.

"So, you're the ones making a muck of my machinations," the piper hissed. "Can't have that, no sir!" He took a deep breath, then blew into his flute with all he had once again. The golden lines in the sky lit up, and suddenly, Clear Wing fell from the sky. Similarly, all of the HEROs present dropped to the ground, as if something was pinning all of the stronger monsters in the area to the ground.

"Now, why don;t we even the playing field, little munchkins?!"

He blew into the instrument one more time. This time though, from the other end of his flute, something other than noise emerged. A black creature, that seemed to stare right into the students with its singular eye, slipped and squeezed its way out of the flute That mirror in the middle of its body didn't do a very good job of reflecting anyone, either.

"Now, eeny-meeny-THAT ONE! GET HIM, RELINQUISHED!" The creature's stalk eye locked onto Zetsuei, and as its arms reached out, a vortex appeared, sucking the dragon into the mirror in its body. After Clear Wing dissapeared, the creature's fleshy wings folded over itself, and a moment later the form of the monster it had absorbed appeared there, grotesquely fused to the flesh. "Now, everyone, get 'em!"

Another big toot from the flute, but this one was quite a bit shorter. As the piper continued playing away at his flute, it seemed the gathered mob of monsters all agreed that strength in numbers was the way to go, as each and every one of them made their way toward the students and their defenses.

    ---

    "Hmmmwahh-wah!!!"

Contrary to what one might expect, Kuriborhn didn't look the least bit terrified. Instead, he fluttered over and tugged on Gabby's arm, urging her toward the oncoming hoard of monsters. Maybe he had an idea?

  3. "It will be! It just... hasn't started yet, I guess. Maybe the ship's waiting for someo-"

"Still nothing all that interesting Quill." Ash stopped mid-sentence as both he and Noah turned to look at the source of the voice. It was one of the others, though neither of them had said much to the girls yet in the few days or so they'd been aboard. "Hey there!"

"Heya." Noah was the first of them to respond, giving Iris and Quill a short wave with his gloved hand. The bell on his neck jingled a little.

"Don't think we've properly met yet huh? My bad, my head's been spinning so long I just wanted to hole up somewhere to think. How are things on your end?"

"Sorta the same." Noah shot a quick glance at Ash. "I've kinda been on my own for a bit too." He wouldn;t say it outright, but he very much didn't appreciate being left alone until now.

"You're welcome to come with me next time I go out on patrol, you know." Ash let out a reptilian grunt that passed for a "Hmph."

"Dude, there's nothing here." This place is just a dead ball of rock and wind. What could you possibly need to patrol for?"

Ash's expression darkened. "You never know, Noah. The digital plane can be very dangerous... and besides, I hate sitting still." He added on, quickly shifting the topic away from anything that might bring up some bad memories.

"Ahh, the real motive." Noah let out a short laugh, then turned back to Iris. "I'm Noah, and my uhhh...."

    "Partner." Ash interjected.

    "Yeah, that. He's Ash."

"Ashardalon. At your service. Most mons call me Ash, though. Its easier." He bowed as he spoke.

"And you guys? I like your hair by the way." He sort of blurted that last part out, but at least it fit into the conversation. It was the truth too, she looked cute with that hair color.

"Fair enough, but I call getting to hold on to Elizabeth if we're vaporized by some sort of Duel Monster related neutron bomb.

Ashley's comment caused Yushiro to let go of Elizabeth's hand, partially from her intimidating presence, but also out of a slight feeling of embarrassment. "Well there won't be anything of the sort, so no one's gonna need to hold onto anyone for dear life."

    "Smooth. Nice comeback, kiddo."

"If you're not gonna be helpful, then would you please just shut up?" Yushiro grumbled internally as the trio arrived at the annex-side entrance to the duel team offices. "Alright, lets see if we can find those spare disks." He said as Ashley unlocked the door. Luckily for them, the spare duel disks were all more or less stored out in the open, and it took less than a minute of rummaging for Yushiro to locate them. Quickly, he clipped one that was his size onto his arm. "Doesn't come in my color, but it'll do." He smirked, trying to muster up a bit of confidence to steady his nerves and maybe possibly convince the girls that he was, perhaps, at least somewhat on top of things. Then he slid his deck into its slot and went toward the front door.

It seemed, however, that several other people had already beaten him to the punch.

Outside was... well the monsters were gone, and in their place a crowd had gathered. Everyone was bathed in a soothing, white light, and several people had duel disks and were playing cards. The displays were spectacular to behold, and it was plainly obvious that what had been a dangerous area a few minutes before had now become a sanctuary of sorts. HE stepped through the doorway to get a better look.

    "Hmmmwaaaah!"

Kuriborhn jumped off of Yushiro's head and started to fly off. Yushiro braced himself for the pain in his legs to return, but was pleasantly surprised when the burning stayed mild. Perhaps the duel space field he was in had a similar effect? He looked around for a moment, and was about to run back inside to get the girls when he spied a familiar looking hat on the head of what could only be its owner.

"Hey, Juju!!!" He called out to Jun as Kuribohrn floated on over toward her general direction. "What is all this stuff?!"

  5. -Digimon Divers-

    OP

Episode 1: The Shooting Star They Saw

Moored on a lonely, deserted island in the digital plane, Aegis sat, waiting for the winds to pick up. The last of the her crew had arrived a scant few days ago, and now that everyone was settled in, all that was left to do was to set off in search of the source code. Of course, without a strong wind or a set destination, there wasn't much use in actually setting out.

Her crew, meanwhile, both human and digimon alike, were still getting used to their new surroundings. Introductions were out of the way, but no one had truly broken the ice yet, and the fact that there wasn't much to do aboard only added to the rather awkward, dreary atmosphere of being stuck on a ship with people you barely knew.

Noah Takenouchi stood alone on the upper deck, watching the data gently drift by far above them. The terrain of the island was barren and rocky, with few visually interesting features. He hadn't started to feel homesick yet, though the fact that he'd worn the same clothes for a few days now with no sign of wear of foul odors was a bit strange to him. Being data had its perks, at least. Still, he was apprehensive. How were four kids supposed to save the world? Was that even what they were doing?

    "Whatcha thinkin' about?"

He looked down. There was Ash: the little dragon who'd pulled him into all of this. Though they were supposed to be partners, they hadn't spoken all that much over the past few days, with Ash constantly going off "scouting" the island and leaving him to his own devices. Him coming up to Noah was something of an anomaly.

"Nothing, really. Honestly I'm sorta bored. I thought you said this was supposed to be an adventure."

-Reliable sign of which personality is surface is if Orianne is fussing with her hair. If she is, it's Orianne, if not, it's likely Iris.
-Still has short gaps in her memory from personalities switching but the two communicate well enough to make it largely unnoticeable.
-Naturally she'll have two different answers to most opinion based questions.
-Does her best to not to explain her condition and just live normally.

Quill was born in a small village, a mere fragment of the old digital world long since passed clinging to junk code where it could. The destruction had long since claimed most of the world, none of the digimon then alive had lived to see it. Despite the small scope of her world, Quill still wanted to see everything. She was never content to just sit still and accept the quiet life the village so cherished. Often she would cause trouble around town when not out exploring the outsides of town.

This didn't quite make her an outcast of course. Many of the other younger digimon wanted to see what was out there if anything. And so Quill would go on to lead little expeditions to the edge of the world. Normally this made for little more excitement than the group made for themselves. But the most recent excursion was anything but quiet.

Upon reaching the end of their slice of home, the group settled down to enjoy themselves a bit before hiking it back to the village. But the peace was soon disrupted by the sudden appearance of several virus-type digimon who had no sense of reason or self. The ground itself seemed to destabilize around them. Quill quickly led the others back to town and managed to stay ahead of the intruders. The older digimon soon found out what had happened but just as soon as they had gathered together to learn the intruders had reached the village outskirts.

The destruction was breath-takingly swift. There was little resistance the local digimon could put up the powerful intruders. Quill only ran, it was all she could do. But on the outskirts of the village she was cornered by several of the digimon. As death approached she briefly evolved into Filmon and repelled her assailants. But the power quickly faded as she returned to Herissmon and continued running. As she reached the edge of the world there was nowhere left to go and so she jumped into the digital sea.

When next she was conscious of her surroundings, Quill was aboard the Aegis with a small group of other digimon. The situation was explained to her and a digivice presented. Her mission was to save the entire digital world spoken of in legend. And to do it she'd need to  recruit a human partner. The task seemed daunting but this was the adventure of a lifetime.

Quill took to monitoring human data when she came across a girl who struck her as particularly open to appeals for help. She had answered an odd email of a prince requesting financial aid in order to share his untold fortunes. Something seemed right about this particular human and so Quill composed a similar message, substituting out the relevant words with things pertaining to digimon and the state of the digital world. The message was quickly deleted which seemed odd. So quill kept sending them, and sure enough they kept getting deleted.

It was frustrating to feel so compelled to message this one human but Quill really liked her for some reason and so wanted to make sure it was her who came. She kept sending messages until finally a response came. The girl had asked if she would be left alone if she agreed to help ,to which Quill excitedly replied yes and brought her new partner on board the Aegis.

The meeting was a bit rough. The human girl was so oddly shaped compared to digimon so Quill was naturally curious but also already wanted to play some tricks on her. She fed her new partner several exaggerated lies prior to finally coming clean which only seemed to rile the girl up. Still, she really liked this human and so presented her with a treasure from her stash in her quills. A golden leaf Quill had once found on a tree, no doubt grown incorrectly because of faulty data.

With her partner on board, Quill's ready to save the world! As long as it's fun. A boring adventure would be the worst.

"Once we're in here, we should be able to cut through a couple of halls and get to the duel team office. Say, what is your plan, anyway?" Elizabeth asked as she ushered Yushiro toward the annex.

"I wanna see if those duel disks are in there. If I'm right about what's going on and someone really has activated a bunch of disks all over campus, then we might be able to do something about it ourselves with duel disks of our own." He paused a moment. "Unless of course they're the root cause, in which case we'll know what to look for... though I'm kinda hoping there's at least one or two. It'll be easier if I can use the cards in my deck to help us out." There was another huff from Kuribohrn in his hair. "Not that I don't appreciate the healing magic, buddy. You're a lifesaver, but I don't think you can keep me on my feet and fight off a bunch of monsters at the same time. Not without help." The word of thanks seemed to appease the moody little puffball for the time being, which was good, since they were now next to the locked door and underneath the overhang- safely out of sight for the time being.

Yushiro's heart was racing, though not in the good way it usually did when he was with Elizabeth. The possibility of getting his skin melted off really drove home how dangerous the situation was, not to mention the dull ache in his shins- Kuribohrn's magic could only do so much to something that wasn't actually dead, it seemed.

"Stay calm kiddo. Panicking won't help anyone."

"Gee, thanks. You try not freaking out a little at a time like this."

"Could be worse. You're not alone, you know."

He was right. At least Elizabeth was here. Yushiro had probably never been more thankful for her presence, actually. Except maybe when he dueled Hiraku. Instinctively, he reached for her hand, hoping she'd reciprocate.

"You scared?" He asked, finally looking at her a little sheepishly. It was plainly obvious that he'd left the "because I'm a little scared too." unsaid.

Noah is a pale Japanese-American teenager with a somewhat peculiar fashion sense. He's tall and thin, perhaps even a little lanky, standing at six feet tall and weighing a bit less than he should. His messy brown hair is dyed red, which contrasts his bright, emerald eyes. A long distance runner, Noah is in excellent shape, though he's all muscle tone and lacks any sort of real bulk. Fond of baggy, loose fitting clothing, he can usually be found wearing hoodies, loose t shirts, and pants that are sometimes a size or two too big, necessitating a belt. What usually draws the eye though are his accessories, notably the pair of aviator goggles that are always in his hair and the leather choker on his neck, to which is attached a bear bell. Both have sentimental value, and so he tends to avoid taking them off. The glove on his left hand serves a more functional purpose- to conceal a very ugly and sensitive burn scar that covers most of his palm and the side of his hand. The wristband and the keychain, on the other hand, are just there to complete the odd, asymmetrical ensemble, though the latter also serves to help keep his digivice on his person.

    Bio

      Hide contents

Noah is a quirky, somewhat quiet young man who, while always trying his best to be friendly and amicable, nonetheless can come off as weird and socially stunted. He doesn't always know what to say or when to say it, and so he has a tendency to either not speak up when he should, or worse, blurt out what's on his mind, which sometimes results in him being unintentionally hurtful. Consequently, he has little faith in his own social skills, and this has led to some notable confidence issues. Compounding the matter, Noah often attempts to internalize how he's feeling, which makes it hard for others to empathize with him and makes him seem aloof and uncaring when he really isn't. Combine all this with his niche interests and strange appearance, and you end up with a teenager who, despite being rather lonely and wanting attention and acceptance, tends to push other people away and has a hard time endearing himself to his peers. Its something of a shame, too, since Noah is on the whole a kind, sensitive person, with a lot of integrity and a strong sense of loyalty. He rarely lies, and will do almost anything for a friend. He's very smart, too, and on the rare occasions that he actually feels as though he's in his element he can be more forthright and far more insightful than other people tend to give him credit for.

Noah's social issues stem from his turbulent upbringing. His father was an anthropologist who was often away for long periods on field research when he was young, and as a result his parents marriage was quite rocky. Eventually they divorced, with a then six year old Noah going with his mother to her native Osaka (and taking her last name). He had quite a lot of trouble adjusting, and struggled both in school and at home. Things only got worse when his mother remarried and they moved in with his new stepfather. The man was abusive, both to his wife and to Noah, with the most egregious offense being a tirade that resulted in Noah's left hand being forced onto the stove's active heating element. That incident was, thankfully, the end of the relationship, but the five years they were together (as well as the recovery from the severe burn) had quite an effect on Noah. He never quite learned how to assert himself, and his rather pronounced self esteem issues began manifesting during that time. It wasn't all bad though. Noah also started running around that time, and found a very small group of friends with whom he shared interests in tabletop games. Another move, this time from Osaka to Tokyo, occurred afterward, and as he got older, Noah started to reconnect with his father in America, as well as reamain in touch with his friends from Osaka thanks to the internet. When he was 13, he started accompanying his father on research trips during breaks from school, and it was through this that he developed a love of traveling and the outdoors (one of his most memorable trips being to Glacier National Park during a stint in Montana with his dad).

Now beginning his second year of high school, Noah still hasn't quite come into his own and hasn't quite found a place to fit in,. He's also begun to lose touch with his old friends from Osaka, a fact that has only added to the lonesome feeling that seems to permeate his life. Maybe that's why, when he got a text message from an unknown number that said "I need your help to save the world. Will you come with me?" He responded, perhaps a little absentmindedly, "Yes." And suddenly found himself in another world.

    • His favorite food is spaghetti, and Noah also has a fondness for sour and spicy things.
    • His favorite color is turquoise- the color of the buttons on his digivice.
    • Noah's goggles are a family heirloom- they belonged to his great grandfather, who was a fighter pilot for the empire of Japan in the second world war, and have been passed down from parent to child.
    • Noah's bear bell is a keepsake from his trip to Montana with his father. Worn to scare off bears and other potentially harmful wildlife while hiking, the gentle ringing sound it makes now accompanies Noah's footsteps pretty much everywhere he goes- you can always hear him coming.
    • Noah can run a mile in under five minutes, and is one of the best distance runners on his high school's track team.
    • An avid tabletop gamer, Noah can talk for hours about RPGs and wargames, as well as the genre fiction that tends to go along with such things.

Ash is from a small island that, according to him, no longer exists- apparently the web address of roleplaying forum. He'd been wandering aimlessly since its destruction until the digivice called to him, and so he made his way to Aegis. There's nothing too special about him among the digimon aboard ship.

    This is a lie.

Ash's home, a large island called Eldevale, is still very much intact- a high fantasy landscape that is home to many digimon. He also wasn't actually chosen by the digivice. His best friend, a Guilmon named Tiamat, was. When it happened, she decided to set out for Aegis- a heroic quest to save the world, just like the knights they'd all heard stories about growing up. The journey would be long, and despite the elders' pleas, Tia was insistent that this was her destiny. They only acquiesced when Ash vowed to accompany and protect her. At first, it was fun- they found exotic places, trained, and had themselves an adventure. Of course until reality eventually caught up with them. The pair ran afoul of Matadormon, a vampire bent on consuming the data of strong digimon. He sensed Tia's heroic calling, and made a meal of her despite Ash's best attempts to fight him off.

Overcome with guilt, and a stinging sense of inadequacy, Ash has decided to take Tia's place, crafting the vague and uninteresting backstory above in order to keep all of this a secret.

Though he's kind, brave, and witty, Ash also behaves a lot like a stereotypical dragon- obsessively hoarding shiny things, and stroking his own ego. He can be very condescending, and sometimes outright antagonistic. That being said, Ash has struggled with an inferiority complex for a long time, and so a lot of his boasting is actually just him trying to overcompensate, which can lead to him biting off more than he can chew. Though he's not quiet, Ash prefers to keep his distance from others emotionally, both to add to the air of draconic superiority that he tries to cultivate and also because he's honestly not very comfortable opening up to people- hence his decision to keep recent events a secret. Once someone does befriend him though, his nobler side becomes more prominent. Ash is loyal, perhaps even to a fault, and though he can be a huge jerk, there's no doubt that he really does want the best for everyone, and he's not afraid to take risks on others' behalf.

    • Ash is incredibly insecure about the fact that he can't fly, and will insist that he can despite all evidence to the contrary.
    • Ash is incapable of resisting the allure of something shiny and metallic, and obsessively hoards all of the shiny things he can get a hold of in his room. If you want him to do something, bribe him with a shiny.

I want to be a part of this because I like working with you. Your world development always gives me great insight and intrigue to create characters. Its fun. However, I've never been as into Digimon as most people. So I'm wondering if you're willing to accept a compromise. I'm interested in making a character. Sort of a modern day bard, minus the singing. A researcher, perhaps. Is this something you can work with or should I move along? Honest answers don't hurt so don't be afraid to tell me no.

Not 100% sure I follow, but what I think you’re suggesting is playing a human without a partner digimon? Or perhaps the opposite?

either way, my answer is: Go for it! The Divers are not be the first humans to enter the digital plane, so if you’re ok with playing a supporting character who might not participate in combat, then I have no objections. I’m interested to see what you can come up with. If the discord link is expired, lmk. I’ll send you another one.

  11. ~Digimon Divers~

    A Digimon RP by Zai

Dedicated to everyone who still remembers their innocence, and everyone who loved, laughed, and cried. To all the tamers, and all the digidestined out there, and to all of them that might follow. To the friends I've made, and every biggest dreamer who ever shared their love for a digital monster with me. This story, whatever it turns out to be, and wherever it might end, is for you. It comes from my heart, and my love for a special part of my childhood. There are pieces of me in it, from my past, and from my present, and whether you're reading it, or helping to write it, I hope it brings you some of the joy that digimon has brought me.

    All my love.

    Rules and Information

    Spoiler

All the NCM and RP section rules apply. I don't feel like listing them here. What I say goes yadda yadda yadda.

    So, what's Digimon Divers?

Digimon Divers is a digimon RP (duh), and from that and the fact that I'm hosting it you can probably guess at the basic gist: Its a coming of age story about a group of high school kids who meet and bond with digital monsters and go on a quest to save the world, learning things about themselves and each other along the way and coming out the other end as better people with lifelong friends of both the human and digimon variety. Does that sound fun? I fuckin' hope so man, because that's what I'm here for.

    Now for the important bit.

In case the dedication above wasn't indication enough, Digimon is special to me. More than any bit of fiction i've ever been interested in, even gundam and mecha, and anime in general- even all the games I've played in my quarter century on this earth, Digimon has been responsible for the most friendships I've made, helped me formulate some of my favorite ideas, and has been a part of my life in some form or another since I was four or five years old. It was my first fandom, helped me meet my first close friend, gave me an escape in my turbulent pre-teens, a canvas on which to paint my first real attempts at writing fiction in my teens, and became a favorite pastime in my first relationship. I still go back to it every now and again, and its a big enough part of my life that one of the sweetest gifts my current girlfriend has ever given me was a dvd with the first few episodes of tamers on it. I love digimon. The emotions it still manages to stir in me, even as a jaded adult, are powerful, and positive. It gives me hope and reminds me that everyone deserves someone that understands them and who loves them unconditionally, even if that person is a digital monster, and that, in turn, people deserve my love and understanding.

Why am I telling you all of this? Well, truthfully, I don't really know how to articulate the answer. I'm not here to put pressure on you by asking you to help me write the best digimon fic ever, and I don't really even intend to do the digimon franchise justice, necessarily. I just want to do something that makes me and everyone who reads it or helps write it feel the way digimon has made me feel, and of course, have fun with it. In the purest of terms, this rp, maybe more than any other I've ever done, is a love letter. And by putting it up here on NCM I want to share that love with people who've also been a big part of my life for the last decade or so. So even if we never finish it, and the only people who actually read it are the five or so people in it with me, if it gets that love across to someone and maybe helps them feel the way this franchise does, then it will have been a worthwhile endeavor. And so, I hope you want to join me in that.

Now for the meat and potatoes.

Divers is going to take cues mostly from Digimon Adventure (the original tv series/season 1), with some bits from Tamers (season 3. you know, the darker one) thrown in, but skewed older, because the story is specifically about kids in high school as opposed to pre-teens. For those of you who haven't watched either and/or didn't grow up with the show, that basically means that the RP is aiming for an emotional, heartfelt story that doesn't pull its punches, but remembers that this is still a kids show franchise and carries itself accordingly. Make sense? Does Avatar the Last Airbender ring any bells?

Anyways, Digimon Divers is going to be structured a lot like an anime television series- with episodes denoted by title cards and opening/ending theme songs, and plots that likewise fit into them. Some episodes will focus more on some members of the cast than others (like when someone's partner digimon digivolves to a new level for the first time) but everyone will get time in the spotlight. Other than that, I'm planning on running things pretty organically- giving the players options to choose where to go on their quest and how to handle the situations they find, with the overaching plot building up over time based on what actions they take.

I've got a discord server up and running for the RP, since its the easiest way to keep in touch. If you;d like an invite, let me know, or just ask someone for one if you know them.

Annnnnnnd that's about it. I'm glad you're here.

    Premise

    Spoiler

Decades ago, The digital world was destroyed- its "god" Yggdrasil (the mainframe computer/AI that created it) experiencing a fatal error and the plane itself explosively shattering into innumerable shards as a result, scattering digimon and data alike across all of humanity's digital networks around the beginning of the current millennium. For humanity, this proved to be a boon, with the net itself experiencing exponential growth (much like it has in real life) thanks to the massive influx of new data, though our species as a whole is largely unaware of the root cause, or of the digital lifeforms that came with it. For the digimon themselves, the Diaspora (their term for it), has been far less pleasant. From their perspective (as the digital perception of time is far different than our own) the world itself exploded centuries ago, sending what remained of itself colliding into a new, far more dangerous one full of malicious code and violent, ever shifting winds. Half of all digimon died, and in the time since, those who remained have had to pick up the pieces and fight a constant battle for their own survival- against the environment, against the human users who occasionally prey upon them (though how aware these people are of what they're actually doing is subject to some conjecture, and often varies), and even against each other. Some fall prey to malicious code and become viruses, while others staunchly defend what parts of the old world they've been able to salvage to create some kind of safe haven for their kind. In short, to be a Digimon in 2020 is to be constantly fighting. Its often digivolve, or die, and things only seem to be getting worse. Fortunately, there is hope. The net is a huge place, and legend has it that the source code from which the digital world was first derived survived the Diaspora. If it could be found, then perhaps a new digital world could be programmed. Most think its just that, a legend, like the tales of the "Digidestined" from long ago who saved the digital world, but some believed otherwise.

One of those who believed was Sorcermon, who spent digital decades wandering the net in search of the mythical source code. And eventually, his search bore fruit.

What the aging wizard found was Aegis, a massive digital ship crafted from the finest chrome digizoid, engraved with digicode so ancient that she could only have been built when the digital world was young. Aegis was intelligent, too, and after being awakened from her long slumber by Sorcermon, she told him of her purpose. Aegis had, once, been a digimon herself: A massive golden beacon of hope and justice, tasked with protecting the digital world from harm. When her time had come to an end, Yggdrasil, the host computer, installed her consciousness in the ship, and used the rest of her data along with its own code to create powerful artifacts in the image of those wielded by the Digidestined of ages past- the Digivice Delta. She explained that she was to act as the Digital world's Ark, only to be brought about in a time of great need, when Human children of pure heart would once again be brought to the digital world, tame Digimon, and save it. The Diaspora had caused her to remain dormant indefinitely, and now here she was, marooned in a forgotten part of the net until someone found her. The source code, she said, should also still exist, though scattered like the rest of the remaining fragments of the digital world. Luckily, so long as she had a crew, Aegis could sail the net in search of the code; diving through the data streams and exploring the whole of the net. They would find as much of it as they could, using Aegis's vast hull and the digivices to gather it together.

    But there was a problem.

The digivices needed power. On the internet, where they were never meant to be used, there was no Yggdrasil to activate them, and Aegis herself, who was no longer a digimon, had no digicore with which to attempt it herself. And so, Sorcermon made a choice. Using his own digi-core- his very soul, as a power source, he managed to bring life to the digivices for a few, brief moments. Though it cost him his life, brilliant beacons of light shot out from within Aegis's hull, and that was enough. Each beacon called out to a chosen digimon on an intrinsic, spiritual level, and as time passed, through fate, design, or luck, all six found their way to Aegis, and learned Sorcermon's story. They became her crew, and with them aboard, she could at last sail the winds of the net. All that was left was to find human children who could use the digivices.

And so each digimon chose a partner. Some lied, some told the truth, some simply asked for help. But no matter how each of them went about it, ultimately, a group of young adults were brought onto the digital plane aboard Aegis, and granted their digivices. These young people: the Digimon Divers, and their partners, must sail on the winds of the net in search for fragments of the mythical source code. Their journey will take them to fantastic locales, the dark depths of the internet, and everywhere in between, and maybe, just maybe, they might succeed, and restore hope to digimon everywhere.

    Setting

    Spoiler

Digimon Divers is an adventure story- the cast will be traveling around the net in search of Yggdrasil's source code. As such, the primary setting of the RP will be (at least when on the move) Aegis herself- who takes the form of a massive ironclad boat. She is able to take flight via levitation, and can spawn a set of sails made of light from her hull to help her navigate the winds of the network. Aegis has rooms to spare, and so the cast is able to make themselves at home and bring along allies too, if they so desire. Her hold is also quite vast, allowing them to transport anything useful they may come across. She can speak to anyone who steps aboard, and can perceive anything that occurs on or in her hull, as well as out to a certain distance around it. Unfortunately though, there is little aboard Aegis in the way of creature comforts, and she sports no weapons of her own. For the humans, returning home is possible via the digivice, though only during moments of calm in the digital winds, and doing so invariably brings the partner digimon with them into the real world, which can cause its own set of problems. As such, the cast can expect to spend extended periods on the digital plane. "Its a good thing you don't age in digiworld!"

Outside of Aegis, Digimon Divers takes place in a world very similar to our own. In fact, were it not for the existence of the digimon, the RP's 2020 would be virtually identical to our own (the current pandemic notwithstanding, of course). This is the real world from which the humans in the cast originate. The Digimon, on the other hand, come from the Digital World, or, if they were born after the Diaspora, the net itself. Collectively, all of these digital locales can be referred to as the Digital Plane.

Everything on the digital plane is free floating in the vast, three dimensional void that is the wider net. Out here, the "winds"- the flow of information from place to place, carry data, fragments of code, and whatever else may exist outside of a stable space in the net, and the laws of reality as a human might know them only sometimes apply, and can shift with the breeze (literally). Surviving out here unprotected, especially for weaker digimon, is nearly impossible, and those that can travel freely on the net (or have a means to do so like Aegis) are highly sought after as couriers or transporters.  In this void float innumerable "islands": web addresses, servers, cloud storage, mobile devices, even fragments of the digital world itself, that in spite of their name can take almost any form, from actual landmasses to alien ships, to planets, geometric shapes, and everything in between. The terrain can vary just as wildly, and is often a very random mishmash of biomes and locales that are sometimes subject to sudden and violent change as the winds force islands to collide, or free floating objects and data are caught in their gravity and impact them. On the islands, the laws of physics remain constant (though what said laws are can vary from island to island), and it is here that Digimon can find some sort of refuge and stability. In the digital centuries since the Diaspora, countless settlements and societies of digimon and other digital lifeforms have appeared on the islands, and though life is hard, they have endured.

    Diver

    Spoiler

Each of the Digmion Divers (the term coined by Aegis for the tamers that have been tasked with helping to find the source code) is a teen (preferably ages 14-17) who comes from somewhere on Earth in the year 2020. Though they all likely come from disparate places and backgrounds, all of them have at least one thing in common: they were chosen by their partners. The reasons for this undoubtedly vary, and some may not even be their partner's first choice, but regardless of the underlying motive, each of them was contacted by their partner digimon through their mobile device or computer, and for one reason or another, agreed to help. After this they were transported to the digital plane aboard Aegis, where they met the rest of the crew, and eventually the other Divers. As of the start of the RP, the cast in its entirety has been present on board for exactly one day, digital time. Each of them also carries a Digivice Delta (also called the model D) of a certain trim color. On their own, the digivices are capable of using a Diver's emotional energy, positive or negative, to help their partner digivolve to the champion level. However, without Yggdrasil to power them, the Divers will have to find other means of helping their partners digivolve further. The Model Ds also feature digimon analyzers and expandable memory in the form of an SD card slot at the top, meaning they can be further enhanced and modified as needed with some programming know-how. They also function as mobile devices, and can be accessed by digimon as well as humans for this purpose.

    Partner Digimon

    Spoiler

Each of the digimon that make up Aegis's crew were chosen by a digivice's algorithm to be a partner digimon, and were summoned or compelled to travel to her in one way or another (or, as the case might be, knew someone who was). This process likely took several digital decades, perhaps longer or shorter, depending upon where the digimon was at the time, and as such each partner digimon's story is different. They each also likely have a different role as part of Aegis's crew. All of them are rookie level digimon at the rp's start, though they could have digivolved or de-digivolved at a point prior to arriving aboard Aegis. Each of them also chose their partners via browsing their online activity and contacting them electronically in one way or another via the digivice. Though the intention was to ask these human children to help in their quest, not every digimon may have been entirely truthful. SOme might have been downright manipulative, even, and so the reasons each pair are together can also vary wildly. In other words, feel free to get creative.

  12. "Zo youz think you can buzt a rhyme and throw down. Aight. But check thi-"

"Yo, Bozz" The sound of a record scratching echoed throughout the hall as the boss stopped and looked at Baseball Cap, who had tapped him boss on the shoulder.

"Whatz you tryna do, yo? Youz throwin off my flo-oh." It was now plainly obvious what had caught his attention: Wifebeater was on the floor, a giant dent in his skull where Kyoko had smashed him with her bat. And then, to make matters even worse, there were skeletons shambling in, and one of them began to drag Wifebeater out of the doorway for some nefarious purpose.

"One verse and they already got Freddy! Bozz grab hiz gangly azz and letz go!" And with that, Baseball Cap was out the door in a cartoonish cloud of dust, leaving the leader to slowly back off while the skull servants were distracted doing horrible things to his friend.

"Yo, thiz ain't ova. Remembuh dat." And with that, he was gone too. Even the Skull Servants, with their expressionless bones, seemed far less than amused by all of this once they noticed, and took it out on their current victim with additional gusto- chunks of the fiendish beatboxer flying all over the hall and making overly gross sounding splat noises as they tore him apart. Thankfully, he was already mostly dead to begin with, so there was no blood to go with the entrails.

"Yushiro, where do you think all of this is coming from? I mean, have you ever seen something like this? I mean in my four years here, I've never had such a situation. And have you noticed they all appear to be level one monsters?"

"Ouch. She barely listened to you at all."

Yushiro let out an audible groan, but otherwise didn't say anything. Mentally or otherwise. He and Kuribohrn (who made quite the show of coughing when she blew smoke at him) gave her a minute to take a puff of her cigarette.

"Are you finish playing with that thing? As much fun as it is to wait around and see what pops up next, I can't help but feel like something bigger, nastier, and probably not any friendlier, is coming. That and... I don't have any level one monsters in my deck. I'm not sure if that matters, but it certainly couldn't help. We either need to get you to the infirmary, or to the duel team office; there are some duel disks there. If we're going to be in duel space I at least want to be able to protect myself, and I left mine back at the flat."

"Hmmmmmwah." Kuriborhn let out a rather agitated... whatever it was the noise kuribohs made was called. He clearly didn't like the insinuation that he was here to play. As if to accentuate the point, he fluttered up to Yushiro's head and landed in his hair, placed his claws together as if in prayer, and did... something. Yushiro couldn't see it, but if Liz cared to notice she'd witness him using what appeared to be a spell, since he started glowing.

    "Whenever you're ready."

The pain in Yushiro's legs started to fade, and he stood up, much more easily this time.  "Guess I'm ready." He gave Elizabeth a smile and took her hand. "Duel Team office. I actually have an idea."

    ----------

The trek to the duel team office was, thankfully, uneventful (other than Kuribohrn giving Elizabeth a sideways look or two from atop Yushiro's head every now and again). When the group arrived there, however, they saw yet another series of obstacles in their way. Ugly ones. They were clustered around the building as if guarding it. Perhaps they'd claimed it as their territory? OR worse, they were under the thrall of something stronger. Shouldn't rule anything out yet.

"Fungi of the Musk? Really?" Yushiro sighed as he peeked out from behind a bush. "Those evil mushroom things can melt you- assuming the flavor text on that card is correct. If we wanna get inside, we'll have to either distract em or clear them out. Got any ideas?" He looked at Elizabeth expectantly, hoping maybe she'd have something.

  13. mqYjeXr.png

"Look on the bright side. You just got out of having to admit to your girlfriend that you're into monster girls in tight clothes." Supremely un-helpful ribbing from Zetsuei. The perfect icing on top of Yushiro's burn-cake.

"You look hurt, can you walk at all? We have to get out of here."  A moment later though, Liz was standing over him, looking worriedly from side to side. Yushiro was still in a bit of a daze (and the pain wasn't helping things, either), so he didn't respond right away. "Oh, forget it. Hold on." The next thing he knew, she was carrying him, and in a few moments they were elsewhere- under a nearby tree. He winced as Elizabeth put him down.

"Duel space rarely if ever covers this wide of an area, Yushiro. You would need a very large number of duels going on concurrently for this to happen, which means...."

"Christ. You look burnt to a crisp. What even was that?! It looks like the whole bloody campus is covered in duel space. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen my fair share of insane moments in this blasted school."

"Yeah... it really stings." He finally managed to say. "I dunno where the monsters are coming from, but the only way for the whole campus to get covered in duel space like this is if somebody turned on a lot of duel discs at once. They might have hacked a bunch of the students' somehow. You don't have yours on you do you?" He sucked his teeth and winced again as the breeze picked up slightly and his burns, well... burned. "I'd check mine, but I don't usually take it with me to class."

"Can you stand, mate? We should get you to the infirmary. Those burns look pretty rough. Hopefully we can dodge all these monsters on the way and figure out what the hell is going on later. This is sort of scary, innit?" Liz still seemed to be a little panicked. Fantastic.

"I can walk, and I'll be fine." He lied. His legs killed, but he didn't want Liz to worry even more. Besides, wasn't he trying to toughen up? "I dunno if we can make it all the way to the infirmary with me slowing us down, though. Might be better if-"

    "hhhwwwahh!"

The reverberating cry startled him, and Yushiro looked up just in time to have a familiar looking winged mitre hat drift down onto his face, followed by a white puffball who had suddenly lost his ability to fly in the tree branches above. Both rolled off his head and onto the ground, and Yushiro sneezed. Kuribohrn quickly recovered his headdress (and dignity) and floated back up so that he was more level with both of their faces, doing his priestly entrance pose with all the gravitas he had probably intended for his entrance to begin with.

    "hhhwwwah-wahhhh!"

"Hey, I know you. You're in my deck! You helped me win my duel the other day!" The little fiend nodded in the affirmative. "D...do you think you can help us out here?"

    --------------------

"Yoyoyoyo! Lookz like we got some bad bitchez up in here boyz!"

Before the girls could exit the bathroom, the door had opened, and three- well they weren't exactly boys- walked in. And they certainly weren't polite.

"Heheh, brah, which one ya wanz?" The snively one in the baseball cap spoke up.

"Yo man, show a little decorum." The tall one wearing a wife beater replied. "We'z here to showz em a good time, not scare em half to death- don't want em lookin like uz! Now drop da beat!"

"Oh yeahhhhhhh." Baseball Cap agreed, and started beatboxing, while the leader wearing the hoodie and the beanie stepped forward.

"Now here's the deal, before y'all squeal." he rapped, while Wifebeater began to freestyle breakdance in plain view. "We'z the D-boyz and now we'z real. Bitchez aint where ya zupposzed to be, and that shitz quite irksome.. to me. Zo if ya all want, to get on out, youz gonna have to win thiz hip-hop bout." Wifebeater stopped mid-headstand as Hoodie paused, keeping perfect time.

"Check it." said Baseball cap, before he went back to the beat.

But if ya lose, then I gotz ta zay, you girlz iz gonna be our, uhh..." Hoodie put a devilish smile on his face. "Datez... today."

  14. mqYjeXr.png

"Well. If you've gone and made such sweeping upgrades to your deck, you may very well be on your way to longer needing my services." she snickered, taking a small sip from her tea, "I've put some thoughts into upgrading my deck lately myself. It's been a while since I've had something fresh; something I enjoy out of my deck. Perhaps a deck change is in order. Who's to say."

"But... I like your Lunalights... they're cute." Yushiro said, somewhat quietly, half hoping she wouldn't hear him. He could hear Zetsuei laughing at him in the back of his mind. Thankfully Elizabeth saw fit to change the subject.

"I think after 1st session I'm going to go to the gym to work out; I've been terrible about that as of late, just going straight to the dance studio instead of building muscle mass and all that. What about you? Any other plans for the day?"

The thought of Liz in shorts and a sports bra flashed into his mind for a second, but he quickly banished it before it started showing on his face. "I dunno. I didn't have any plans for today, actually. Dunno if Akira's around, so- wait what the heck?"

What had caught Yushiro's attention was an animal on the concrete in front of them. It was blue, unlike anything he'd ever seen before, and curled up in a ball. Out of curiosity, Yushiro walked up to get a better look, and then immediately recognized it, though this only added to his confusion. "Explossum? What's a duel monsters hologram doing out-"

    BOOM!!!!

Before he could finish his sentence, the monster did as its name would suggest; the explosion at his feet hurling Yushiro several yards backward into a nearby bush. As if on cue, several additional Explossums began floating, or rolling their way out from nearby cover, until Yushiro, Liz, and anyone else in the area were completely surrounded by explosive rodents. The Sky above had turned the familiar magenta of duel space, as well, but instead of being concentrated in one area, the entire campus seemed to be shrouded in overcast red.

"aaaahhhhhh.... dangit that really burns!" Yushiro winced as he looked at his scorched ankles- the pant legs that had been there moments before now having been completely charred away to reveal blistered, red skin. In the distance, they could hear the very faint sound of a flute...

    ---

Elsewhere too, more holograms began to appear seemingly at random, wreaking all sorts of havoc around campus. Some were openly hostile, while others seemed content to wander around and ignore the students. The only constant was that they were everywhere... and for some reason all of them were level one. The faint flute sounds accompanied them wherever they went, too. Before long, the school was in a mixture of awe and panic.

  15. Kazu.png

    Um, Melissa Ashforth.

"And my name is Kazu Eilhardt Shioda. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Kazu replied, with a very genuine looking smile. She didn't respond to him for a few seconds, evidently lost in thought. Thankfully, Kazu's patience was nigh-infinite, and so he waited until she finished whatever mental gymnastics she was performing with the same friendly look on his face.

Sorry, I, um… If you- If you’re asking what it sounds like you’re asking, um, I’m not sure how good my advice is going to be here. I could reference the Theology of the Body if you like, but I don’t know it that well."

Kazu resisted the urge to shake his head in the negative as the prodding feeling grew in intensity.

But, um, I also don’t think that’s what you’re asking? At least, I wouldn’t be asking random girls that. If you’re uncomfortable talking about it. Without that, though… I’m sorry, um, I don’t mean to pry more than I already have, but what’s the difference between what your heart wants and what your head wants? With me, I’ve found they’re often a lot more similar than I first thought. I understand you want to be vague about it, I probably would be too. I promise I won’t judge if you’re more in-depth, but I won’t pry any more either. That’s about as much advice as I can give.

Rather surprisingly, Melissa's words gave Kazu actual pause. She would never know the exact context, of course, but they resonated nonetheless as Kazu replayed the past few weeks in his head. Melissa could probably see the gears turning in his head as his answer dawned on him, and the next course of action became clear.

"My dear, I dare say that you've given me precisely the advice I was searching for!" He said, rather excitedly, but with a warm, genuine thankfulness that replaced the rather sterile, polite air he'd been projecting up to that point. "I don't think I need to go into more detail, though...." he paused, bashfully scratching the back of his head. "Lets just say that I've been overthinking my love life. What's most important is that she and I are happy together, and if she feels the same way that I do, then she will support me like I do her. In short- I actually have nothing to worry about." He stood up, reached back into his deck box, and pulled out one of the two cards he'd been looking at earlier. The prodding feeling in the back of his mind subsided. "A token of my gratitude. For taking the time to listen to me. I think this Rain Bozu quite suits you, Miss Ashforth."

    mqYjeXr.png

"Yushiro, I have to tell you something about the dance actually."

Yushiro looked back over at his girlf- could he even call her his girlfriend? With a mixture of curiosity and a little fear. Maybe he'd done something wrong?

"I didn't want to distract or ruin our night, because I had a lovely time but I also don't want to be dishonest with you, and I feel it's better to tell you now rather than later. I... well I didn't actually get to see most of your duel." she faced him, wincing a bit, hoping he wouldn't be too angry, "A friend of mine, she was feeling rather overwhelmed and I didn't want to leave her feeling alone. I understand if you're mad, it meant a lot to you. You don't have to say it's okay just for me."

Yushiro smiled at her, relieved that it wasn't anything he'd done. Perhaps, under other circumstances, he would have been a bit disappointed to hear that she missed most of his game, but between his fondness for Liz and her reasoning the emotion he felt was decidedly not disappointment, or anger, for that matter.

"I was going to see if I could track down video of the duel so I could at least watch how you did it. There was certainly plenty of cheering from the bathroom. Sounded like it was a rather entertaining bout... I really am sorry for missing it. I wasn't sure what to do at the time. Perhaps after I watch over it, though, we could review the duel and keep practicing?"

He put his hand up, as if to reassure her. "I'm not mad at all. Heck, believe it or not..." He leaned in and gave her a quick kiss on her forehead. "I'm proud of you. I'm a little bummed that you missed it, sure, but you had something more important to do, and we spent the whole rest of the night together. Plus, you came out and told me about it, too, which tells me that you care enough to consider how I feel about it, even if you were a little too nervous to tell me right then." He started to blush a bit, and took another bite of his breakfast to give himself a break from making eye contact with her. "And knowing you care, and that I make you a little nervous, makes me... really happy." He looked back at her again, this time with a bigger, more bashful grin. "If you can find some footage, I wouldn't mind watching it with you, but don't feel obligated. I would like to practice with you some more, though. You're a big part of why I won in the first place, and I think I'm gonna be needing the help."

"Hey Yushiro, I was nervous you had forgotten about our little morning rendezvous! I wasn't quite sure if you fancy a breakfast on your way to class, but I erred on the side of caution and prepared you one if you'd like." Yushiro blushed. He certainly wasn't expecting her to have made him food, and he didn't usually eat breakfast on weekdays anyway, but he took it regardless. "I made a poppyseed scone, an oven baked egg and some fresh fruit, but if you don't want it give it to one of your friends or something, I've no use for another breakfast. I just want the container back."

"Thanks Liz." He gave her a smile, and she leaned in and pecked him on the cheek, which caused Yushiro's cheeks to get redder.

"Shall we, then? I'm in Moto Hall first today."

He offered her his hand. "Yeah. Let's get going." So this was what having a girlfriend was like. He could certainly get used to this. As they were about to leave though, Yushiro's phone buzzed.

    From: AkiraTHEMAN

    To: THEMANYUSHIRO

Vigorous Right Fist Fukuryu is a kickass name. The Man Akira is proud.

So he was watching! Yushiro had gone the entire night with barely a hint of his best friend. Not that he minded at the time of course, but it was reassuring to note that Akira had seen him win. He let go of Elizabeth's hand for a moment to shoot Akira back a quick text.

    From: THEMANYUSHIRO

    To: AkiraTHEMAN

Came up with it on the spot! Glad it sounded cool! Where were you though?! I don't think I saw you all night.

He put his phone back in his pocket, and then, a little hesitantly, took the scone out of the container and had a bite. He didn't know what he'd been expecting, but Yushiro was pleasantly surprised. "Its good."

    Kazu.png

Kazu sat in silence for a few moments, considering how best to phrase things. He damn well couldn't tell the girl the truth (not that she'd believe it), but perhaps a well disguised metaphor, peppered with little nuggets of his actual emotional turmoil, would be enough to get an insightful opinion out of her. "Well, you see..." He pretended to scratch the back of his head out of nervousness. "My girlfriend and I, ahh... you see..." Now there was actual nervousness mixed in. Talking about his love life always made him feel awkward, even if in this case it wasn't actually what was going on. "My girlfriend went through something pretty traumatic a few months ago- she's fine now though, fear not- but ever since, well, she seems to be taking things far too quickly in regards to our relationship. I... I do not know if I'm ready for that yet. It worries me quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love her with all my heart, but we are still in high school you know? I do not want to hurt her or make the wrong decision, but at the same time I'm also scared to rush into things with her. Like, what if I am unable to perform, or-or gods forbid she finds someone else?" Oops. He hadn't intended to steer things into that direction, but there was no backing out now, even if it was an area in which he actually had complete confidence and experience. "I do not know what the right choice to make is, you see. Do I follow my instincts, or do I use my head?"

He only now turned his head back to look the girl in the face, silently hoping to himself that he hadn't made her far too uncomfortable my mistake. Best to include an apology, actually. "Sorry... I didn't intend to go into such... lurid detail. Please forgive me, miss... What might your name be, by the way?"

  17. Kazu.png

Excuse me. I don’t mean to presume, but, um, you look like you need someone to talk to? I’m sorry if I’m wrong, but um…

Kazu relaxed a bit. He'd never seen this girl before, but she was just about the least threatening individual he had ever come across. Small, conservatively dressed. In some ways she even reminded him of... nah, it was best not to think about such things at present. Just as he finished that thought process, she sat down next to him. Intriguing.

I’m not the best talker, but I like to think I’m a good listener, at least.

"I do not think you could be of much use to me, I'm afraid." He said, with a polite sort of sadness in his tone. "My current conundrum is rather complicated,  you see, and I-"

He stopped. Kazu felt as though something was... prodding him? The feeling was certainly not physical, but that was the word for it. Prodding. A moment of thought longer and he figured out what it was. Most intriguing. Perhaps he was not as far behind as he thought. "Actually miss, while I do not need someone to vent my frustrations to, I could use another person's insight into how I might best solve my problem. Do you have a few minutes to spare, perhaps?"

Episode 6: The Sound of Music

    Kazu.png

The Monday after Kickoff was always a little bit dreary. No one really looked forward to going back to class after what was often the most exciting weekend of the year up to that point. Kazu Shioda was, on the surface at least, no different. In reality though, class had nothing to do with his melancholy.

"Today?" he asked, clutching his phone to his ear with both hands just to be extra sure he heard correctly.

"Yup. Your girl's got it all lined up for me."

"But, this is all so sudden. I haven't even finished loc-"

"Sorry prettyboy, vacation's over. Just make sure you do your part, alright?"

Kazu grimaced. "Of course. I wouldn't dream of disappointing her."

"Man you're so whipped. Anyways, I'm out. See you later." The boy on the other end hung up.

Kazu let out a growl. Things were moving too quickly. Much too quickly. He took a break from his walk and sat down on a campus bench, deciding that being late for English was an acceptable trade off for having a few minutes to himself to process. "If that brute's on his way... she must be getting antsy. Damn. I was hoping to have more time than this." He pulled a pair of cards out of his deck box. "If you two care at all about this silly dome, you had better make up your minds. And soon." He stopped as he heard footsteps coming up the sidewalk, and just like that back into the box they went. He had to avoid drawing too much attention to himself. Especially considering what he now had to do.

    mqYjeXr.png

Monday morning. Time to go get Liz and walk her to class. True to form, Yushiro had managed to get himself out of bed a full half hour earlier, which gave him plenty of time to get ready and make his way over to her dorm.

"Color me impressed. You must really like this girl if you're willing to lose sleep to take her to class."

Yushiro blushed and frowned as Zetsuei's voice echoed in his head. "Yeah, so what?"

"Good! Glad you're man enough to admit it, kiddo. Believe it or not, that's a big step"

    "Toward what?"

"Being a man, of course! A real man is comfortable with his own feelings. I figured you would have picked that one up from your buddy Akira a long time ago."

"He and I don't... really operate the same way. And who are you to comment on my manliness anyway Mr. disembodied dragon voice?!"

"Can't help it. Its my directive. Gotta make sure you're worthy of handling this card."

"You keep saying that. But you're just a Duel Monsters card at the end of the day. The only thing really special about you is... well, you."

"There's a lot more to this that you're not ready to know yet, Yushiro. Just focus on doing right by your lady friend for now, ok?"

He groaned, but mentally gave Zetsuei an affirmative answer. He'd given up on getting rid of Clear Wing's resident by now, but Zetsuei's running commentary on his life was still hard to get used to. Yushiro tried putting the dragon out of his mind for the moment as he made the left that took him up the path to the senior girls' dorm, hoping he'd see Liz inside waiting for him. SHe did remember that he was supposed to come get her today, right?

  19. August

    Spoiler

Name: His Royal Highness, First Prince of the Neo-Zenebas Empire, August Richard Thales-Muroa August Krautzewitz

    Gender: Male

    Age: 16

    Nationality: Zenebas/Guylos

    Appearance

    Spoiler

    Pgg6rlv.gif

August looks young for his age, with most mistaking him for a younger teen of 14 or 15. He's lean, standing at 5' 9" with boyish features and big, icy blue eyes. Like most of the extended Zenebas royal family, August has light blonde hair, which is naturally wild looking and spiky (though he keeps it relatively short when compared to the rest of his family). Unlike many on Zi, August wears no facial markings, choosing instead the cleaner look that signifies the Muroa family's vow to rule justly without tribal biases. Though born on Nyx, he's spend most of his life on Delpoi, and so lacks the hypersensitivity to sunlight that his people are usually known for (though he does have a pale complexion and gets sunburn easily). Aside from his youthful appearance, he seems to look the part of a typical mercenary zoid pilot: rugged, functional, but stylish clothing, and a few accessories that might come in handy. In August's case, these would be a sharpened alloy loading hook that he keeps attached to a length of heavy duty cord, and a pilot's grip knife to which he can attach it, turning both objects into a kind of grappling hook, or a pulley to help him hoist things that are too heavy for him on his own.

    Personality

    Spoiler

"For someone who's supposedly on the run, you do a terrible job of staying inconspicuous."

An apt appraisal of the First Prince, if there ever was one. Equal parts knight errant and wide-eyed child, at first glance August seems to be way, way in over his head in the wastelands of Europa. This is entirely true. He's naive, stubborn, and can be very obnoxious; all traits that serve to both get him into trouble, and rub the locals the wrong way. Not one for subtlety, August wears his emotions on his sleeve, and very rarely holds his tongue, preferring instead to vocalize (often loudly) what's on his mind. He can be impatient and quick to anger, too, not to mention he's overly trusting, and gullible enough to be easily led on. Part of this stems from his upbringing. After all, being raised in the lap of luxury (or what passed for it, in the early years of the Neo-Zenebas Empire) would have such an effect on almost anyone. "Not that I was raised in the lap of luxury, who told you that?!" And as for the rest... well, August just has some growing up to do.

He's not a bad kid- "Man! I'm a Man!" Right. Man, though. Quite the contrary, in fact, as those who know him best can attest. He has a strong moral compass and sense of justice, traits he likely picked up from Emperor Wolff growing up. August often takes it upon himself to right the wrongs he sees, whether he's asked to get involved or not. Though this might make him seem self-righteous, August doesn't act this way out of conceit. Rather, he simply believes in doing the right thing, and his naivete and attitude usually mean that he'll go about it in the most direct way possible. Thankfully, August isn't overly belligerent about it, and he's even capable of displaying some tact and restraint if the situation calls for it. Of course, as a Zoid pilot, and IMperial nobility, August has never been afraid to use violence, nor does he shy away from bragging about his combat prowess (especially in Zoids, though in truth his piloting and combat skill as a whole leave a bit to be desired).

Though he is indeed overconfident, the bravado is also something of a front. August is sweet and kind-hearted, but he's also very, very insecure about showing weakness to others, and so he tries to act as tough and brash as he can to compensate. He isn't fooling anyone though. August's real nature comes out most often when he's interacting with younger children and Zoids, (who can most easily tell that he's not really threatening in the least), but anyone who spends enough time around him can tell that he's a warm, sensitive boy. He'll steadfastly deny that he's a big softie, of course, but at the end of the day, most people see right through him and treat him as such with a bit of time.

While a more cursory glance at him would seem to say otherwise, in certain ways, August is as noble as his title would indicate "I don't have a title! You've got me confused for some other guy!" Sure, he's loud, stubborn, and doesn't quite know when to restrain himself, but all in all, he's a good kid, and has within him the makings of a great man. If only he would learn to reign himself in a bit.

    Background

    Spoiler

Born just a few short years before the beginning of the Western Continent War, most of August's early life was spent on Nyx, in the Guylos capitol of Valhalla. Thanks to his family’s noble Guylos heritage, as well as the influence of his uncle: Regent Gunther Prozen, August lived his earliest days blissfully in the lap of luxury. All of the young boy’s wants and needs were provided for, even amidst the desolate landscapes of the dark continent. His earliest memories are happy ones, spent playing in the snows of Nyx with his best friend: the crown prince Rudolf Gerhardt Guylos III, watched over by Prozen's son Wolff when he and August's father Thomas weren't off on deployment with the elite Eissen Dragoon unit. August was only four years old when the Western Continent War concluded; blissfully unaware of the sacrifices made by his countrymen during the Guylos empire’s defeat. It wouldn’t be until ZAC 2101, when the Republic once again came to Nyx, that  August would learn of the horrors of war and of the machinations of his uncle.

    ~Logo By: Thar~

    ~Theme: Song For...~

    Intro

    Spoiler

What do you mean you've seen this before?

So, what is Zoids: Twilight? Why, a Zoids RP of course! But I guess you figured that out already...

Zoids (the proverbial Dr. Thunder to Gundam's Dr. Pepper, or maybe Mr. Pibb if you're a heathen) has always been a favorite of mine. I grew up watching the anime, wasted money on some of the model kits, and got my start writing doing Zoids forum rp. Plain and simply, I love Zoids, and this RP is an attempt to pay homage to the franchise, while at the same time also telling a good action/adventure story in one of the most original settings in fiction (for my money, anyways).

Now, I know that most of you are probably not at all familiar with zoids unless you're of a certain age and happened to watch a lot of cartoon network circa 2002, but don't worry! You need to know nothing about the franchise to participate in this rp, and I'll be here and on discord to help everyone get up to speed, be it designing characters, introducing you to the setting, or picking out a zoid (I even do sprites for custom equipment and paint jobs and such!). Now, without further adieu, here's what the hell is going on!

Z:T takes place in a continuity similar to the one portrayed in the original Zoids model kits (usually called the Battle Story), with a little bit of influence, some locations, and plot elements from the first anime series: Chaotic Century (One of the two or three anime series anyone on NCM is likely to have seen). Its been over 10 years since the war on the western continent of Europa ended. Though the world has witnessed great changes in that time, Europa has remained largely the same. The scars of the war, physical and psychological, are still fresh, and the people remain as rugged and independent as always. However, with the ultimate end to the ongoing conflict between the Helic Republic and the Neo-Zenebas empire behind them, things are finally beginning to change.

    Rules and Info

    Spoiler

First and foremost, all NCM and RP section rules apply. Other than the obvious, the host's word is law here. Duh.

Z:T is structured similarly to an adventure novel. The plot will unfold episodically, with each chapter being denoted by a title card, while the overarching story will advance as the RP does. Like many of my other RPs, I will be running a discord server for participants of Z:T. Anyone wishing to join the RP is strongly advised to join the server, and and I'll be happy to share the link on request.

    Setting

    Spoiler

    Planet Zi

    Spoiler

Zoids: Twilight, like most Zoids stories, takes place on the Planet Zi. Situated exactly opposite the planet Earth on the other side of the Milky Way, Zi is in many ways very similar to our ancestral home. Like Earth, it has a livable climate, as well as native life forms, oceans and continents. However, Zi can be a harsh place. As it is much closer to its Sun, Zi's climate is a great deal hotter and dryer than that of earth, with a large portion of the planet's landmass covered in sandy desert and rocky outcrops. Since the arrival of humanity on Zi thousands of years ago, forests, grassy plains and even jungles have begun to appear, having grown thanks to plants and animals the human colonists brought with them.

Though the Zi of today resembles earth, and is home to both humans and animals found on our home planet, it is also home to its own native species: A nearly identical species of humans known as Zoidians, and their robotic animal companions, the Zoic Androids. Zoic Androids (almost always referred to as Zoids, for short) are giant, technorganic life forms that resemble animals found on earth. Given life thanks to Zi's immensely strong magnetic field, Zoids once roamed free millennia ago, but since then have been largely domesticated, modified, and weaponized by both Zi's native Zoidians, as well as the later human colonists. Though intelligent, and sometimes even self-aware, the Zoids of today are largely man-made, and used as the main weapons of war on planet Zi.
Zi has six continents, which are as follows:

Delpoi: The Central Continent, Delpoi, is the largest, and has traditionally been the seat of power on Zi. It is currently home to both the Helic Republic, which controls the southeastern half of the continent, and the Neo-Zenebas Empire, which controls the northwestern half. Like the rest of Zi, Delpoi is dominated mainly by deserts, though two prominent mountain ranges, one in the east, and one bisecting the continent in the center, exist. Thanks to an overabundance of underground fresh water, life on Delpoi is considerably easier than on most of Zi's other continents, and as a result is home to the largest population and the most advanced cities on Zi.

Adelle: To Delpoi's south is the smallest continent: the Southern Continent Adelle. Until recently, Adelle was uninhabited, save for its native wild zoid population, but since the end of the war it has become neutral territory and a venue for negotiations between the Republic and Neo-Zenebas Empire. Its tropical climate and unspoiled natural beauty have also made it's only major city, Lefrae Beach, a popular vacation destination.

Sandor: Two continents lay to the north of Delpoi. Far to the northeast is the uninhabited northern continent, Sandor. One of the few places on Zi covered in ice and snow year round, its harsh mountainous terrain, far off location, and lack of resources mean it is largely ignored.

Nyx: Directly north of Delpoi, across the most treacherous ocean on Zi, is the Dark Continent, Nyx. A land of volcanic ash, magnetic storms, and frozen wastes, Nyx is the most inhospitable locale on Zi. Once home to the brutal, totalitarian Guylos empire, nowadays Nyx is generally ignored by the rest of the world, save for a few scattered settlements and Republican or Neo-Zenebas imperial installations. Nyx is also known to contain ruins belonging to the ancient Zoidian civilization, as well as what's left of many Guylos cities and bases, now abandoned after the empire's collapse.

Loramere: To Delpoi's east and Sandor's south is Loramere, the Eastern Continent. A land of gentle hills and rolling plains, Loramere has always been a peaceful, pleasant place, and thanks to its countless wheat farms, is often referred to as the "Bread Basket" of Zi. Loramere is also home to the Zoitec Corportation, the largest independent weapons manufacturer on the planet. Zoitec's claim to fame is its BLOX technology, which allows zoids to combine with one another in battle. Though Loramere's people firmly maintain their independence and neutrality, Loramere is also known for being extremely welcoming of outsiders, having played host to the Helic Republic-in exile during the war as well as the remnants of the Guylos empire that managed to leave Nyx.

Europa: Last, but by no means least, is the primary setting of the RP: The Western Continent Europa. The second largest continent, Europa sits comfortably across the sea from Delpoi, the calm oceans and the two continents' close proximity to one another making passage between them fast and easy. Like Delpoi, Europa is dominated by deserts, save for its northeast, which is covered in dense forest and towered over by Mt. Olympus, the largest mountain on Zi. Unlike Delpoi, groundwater is much more scarce on Europa, with the inhabitants instead being more reliant on fresh water from Windeen Lake and the Red River, which runs from Europa's northeast all the way to the western side of the continent, and forms a sort of natural border between the imperial and republican aligned sides of the continent.

Europa's central and southern regions are dominated by a vast, harsh desert, within which lies the treacherous Iselina mountain range. Aside from a few scattered villages, as well as the towns of Wind and Sand Colony, this region is largely uninhabited, and is instead littered with ruins and remains from the war, constantly being buried and unearthed by the shifting sands. Due to the harsh terrain and difficulty in crossing the desert, Europa's south is for the most part unexplored.

Europa was once the seat of power for the ancient Zoidian civilization, and as such is home to innumerable ruins and examples of Zoidian high technology. Its strategic location (being in close proximity to Delpoi and representing a much less hazardous crossing from Nyx) as well as these ruins made it a prime staging ground for the Guylos Empire's invasion of the Helic republic. The resulting war, known as the Western Continent War, was waged all across the northern half of Europa. Europa's native population, though ostensibly independent, tends to align with one or the other of Zi's two superpowers. Rugged and self sufficient, Europans are a tough, resourceful bunch, often eking a living out of Europa's barren lands and scavenging what leftovers they can from the war and zoidian ruins.

Though independent, Europa is home to two major powers, and innumerable smaller ones. In the east, centered around New Helic City, are the Helic Republic's europan territories. Though not claimed outright by the republic, this territory, which includes Mt. Olympus and much of the eastern forests, tends to be dominated by republican military patrols, and the republic can often be found assisting the local population. To the Northwest is the imperial sphere. Formerly held by the Guylos empire, the city of Guygalos and the surrounding territories have recently been annexed by the Neo-Zenebas empire. Despite the presence of these factions though, the sheer size of the continent and lack of available resources means that the vast majority of Europan territory is lawless frontier. Bandits and scavenger parties are common, and the people often must keep the peace themselves.

    History

    Spoiler

The Beginning, The Republic, and the Empire

The Zoids Bible here does a fantastic job of describing the world's early history. Read it.

Zi's history is long and complex; dominated by warfare. Even before the arrival of humans on Zi, the ancient Zoidian race and the Zoids themselves lived lives of constant conflict, be it for sport or spoils of war. The coming of humanity changed little, with human colonists fighting amongst themselves in tribal warfare on Nyx and Delpoi for centuries. It wasn't until Zi Adjusted Calendar (ZAC) 1600, with the founding of the Helionic Kingdom on Delpoi, that those living on Zi began to unify. Even then, it wasn't until the invasion of Delpoi by tribesmen from Nyx that civilization finally came to Zi with the founding of the Helic Republic by King Helic Muroa in ZAC 1955.

This period of stability would not last long, however. Helic's sons, President Helic Muroa II and commander in chief Zenebas Muroa, quarreled constantly over Republican war policies, with Zenebas favoring aggressive military buildup and an invasion of Nyx. Ultimately these arguments turned bloody, with Zenebas and his supporters making their way to the western half of Delpoi and founding the Zenebas empire in ZAC 1978. What followed was roughly 30 years of low intensity war between the two nations, which saw the first use of man-made zoids in combat. War would continue uninterrupted until the last of the human colony ships, the Globally 3, crash landed in the middle of Delpoi.

    The Devil's War

Both sides absorbed survivors into their fold, and using advanced Earth technology began to produce ever deadlier and more advanced zoids. This arms race quickly intensified what had been mostly border skirmishes into all out war. What came to be known as The Devil's War would last for over two decades, with heavy casualties on both sides of the conflict. The war would eventually see the Zenebas Empire expelled from Delpoi, only for them to return thanks to assistance from the brutal, totalitarian Guylos Empire from Nyx. With an entire army of newly designed zoids, including the terrifying Death Saurer, the Helic Republic in turn would be nearly defeated. Only thanks to deploying their own new Zoids was the Repiblic able to again defeat the Zenebas empire. Ultimately, the Guylos Empire would use the turmoil on Delpoi to its advantage, attacking the continent themselves and absorbing the Zenebas empire into itself.

Fighting between the Guylos Empire and the Republic did nothing but intensify further, with the dark zoids used by the empire wreaking untold environmental devastation on Delpoi. The tide would shift many times, with both sides deploying some of the most powerful weapons in Zi's history against one another. However, the nearly 70 years of war on Zi would finally come to an end in ZAC 2056 when an asteroid struck and destroyed one of Zi's three moons, raining debris down across the planet and killing millions on the eve of the final battle.

    Interbellum

Both sides were unable to wage war for decades after the meteor disaster. Parts of Nyx sank into the ocean, and Delpoi as a whole was devastated. Worse still, the ocean between both continents , which had always been treacherous, became nearly impassable and plagued by endless magnetic storms. In the interim, Elena Muroa, daughter of Zenebas, became president of the Helic Republic under the alias of Louise Camford, and Gunther Prozen, secretly Zenebas's illegitimate son, became Guylos regent, ruling in the then-10 year old prince's stead. Secretly, Prozen desired to rebuild his father's empire, and set about making plans to destroy both the Guylos Empire and the Republic.

With the sea to Deploi impassable, Prozen set about invading Europa, both to give his forces experience fighting the native populace and the few local republican forces, as well as to use the continent as a staging area for an invasion of Delpoi. Thus, in ZAC 2098, the Western Continent War began.

The Western Continent War and the War on Nyx

A more in depth record of the beginnings of the western continent war, maps of Europa, and common zoids used by both sides, as well as general information on planet Zi can be found here. I highly recommend reading it.

At first, the empire held the overwhelming advantage, using old, reliable zoids from the devil's war to replace their now extinct dark zoids, as well as brand new designs equipped with technology derived from Ancient Zoidian ruins, to route the republic's forces and drive them into the forests in Europa's northeast. The fighting in these first few months was desperate, with republic barely managing to hang on thanks to brave sacrifices on the part of its men. Only when the republic responded with new zoids of their own did the tide turn. Despite the Empire's best efforts, including terrifying new machines like the Geno Saurer and Death Stinger, the Republic ultimately came out the victor, pushing the Empire off of Europa and following them to Nyx, leaving Europa mostly abandoned.

The invasion of Nyx would last another two years, with the vast armies of the republic launching an attack on the guylos capital itself in ZAC 2102. However, this was all according to Prozen's plan. During the battle, he and his personal Zenebas-loyalist forces attacked both sides. Though they were defeated, Prozen himself detonated his zoid, destroying the armies of both sides as well as the entire city. The Guylos Empire was no more.

Neo Zenebas, the Second Central Continent War, and Peace

Detailed information on the Second Central Continent war, as well as its major events and players, can be found here under the Zoids Fan Book EX headings. This is the setting's most recent history, and I highly recommend reading it.

In the aftermath, Prozen's son, Wolff Muroa, took advantage of the republic's weakened state and established the Neo Zenebas Empire on Delpoi. The war continued, this time with the republic's defeat. Exiled to Loramere, President Camford's son, President Rob Herrman, allied the remnants of the republic with the Zoitec corporation, as well as Guylos remnants on Loramere, and launched a counterattack on Delpoi. It wasn't until ZAC 2110 that the war finally came to a close with the signing of an armistice between the two war-weary nations.

In the two years since, Zi has entered into an era of uneasy peace. There are still many belligerents on both sides, and despite President Herrman and Emperor Muroa's commitment to cooperation, the situation remains uneasy. A particularly troubling issue is control of Europa, with both nations having returned to their spheres of influence on the lawless continent.

    Plot

    Spoiler

Red River: a fledgling town situated on the old Helic/Guylos border. Built out from the remnants of an old republican army base, its location on the banks of the eponymous Red River gives it access to a ready supply of fresh water, quite the commodity on Europa. Red River is a scavenger town, composed mostly of those who make a living picking the nearby battlefields and ruins clean. The old base has become a kind of communal Zoid parking lot and maintenance facility, with the town charging residents and travelers alike to store and look after their Zoids there. The base is highly secure for an independent settlement, with Red River's local militia stationed there on guard duty when not on patrol. The town has grown quite rapidly over the past 10 years since its founding, and though it is still rather small, its on its way to becoming a power in the wastelands.

For one reason or another, you find yourself in Red River in the aftermath of a particularly destructive raid on the town. A band of marauders, mysteriously far more skilled and better equipped than your average gang of bandits, struck just as the most prolific of the local scavengers, Jarro Waller, returned to Red River with what he described as "The haul of the century". Though Red River's militia engaged the raiders, their salvaged Zoids proved ineffective when confronted by the enemy's Helcats and Shadow Foxes, backed by an unidentified Zoid with superb electronic warfare capabilities. Losses were heavy, with the raiders making off with Waller's entire haul, the supplies of several other scavengers, and destroying or severely damaging most of the Militia's as well as several local Zoids. Casualties even included Finn: The Militia's Gordos and Red River's largest, most heavily armed Zoid. Though Finn survived, the Zoid is in severe condition, and without it Red River may not be able to fend off a second raid.

An ex Guylos soldier, Jarro Waller is making preparations to hunt down the raiders and regain his loot. Of course, alone his Molga isn't up to the task, so he's offered to pay any pilots willing to accompany him in the recovery operation. At the same time, the Militia, eager to get their heavy hitter back in working order, is offering a reward to anyone who can procure a sufficient quantity of Zoid Magnite: a cobalt colored volcanic rock with incredibly strong curative properties for zoids. Of course, it's difficult to come by, with the nearest known source being Mt. Ohsa in republican territory. The trek to the mountain is long, and its possible that the Republic may not be very tolerant of scavengers making their way past the military base built into the side of the dormant volcano.

  21. What Zai Likes: Mecha, Science fiction, sunrise studios in the 1990s, et al. Honestly, if its good, I'll probably enjoy it, but I lean toward stuff that's a bit more grounded. Cool with long stuff too, so long as its not like, 100+ episodes of serialized action show.

Things Zai dislikes: Moe crap (Cute is fine, cute and terrible is not), shit with one season that doesn't have a complete story.

MyAnimeList: So out of date its irrelevant. Avoid stuff that aired on cartoon network from like 1999-2010 and you should be ok.

Yushiro looked over the two cards in his hand. It wasn’t much, but there was definitely enough there for him to make a play.  “First I’ll banish the Speed Recovery I sent to my GY last turn to return Speedroid Terrortop to my hand, and then I’ll normal summon it! Say hi!”

Terrortop returned, spinning triumphantly, if such a thing was possible. Clear Wing looked down at it and let out a gravely huff that could almost be construed as a laugh. “And when terrortop gets summoned, I can add a Speedroid from my deck to my hand, and I choose another Taketomborg! And guess who’s taking the field next?” Yushiro fished the card from his deck and placed it immediately on the field. “I’m sure you can guess what the next part’s gonna be.”

“Just get on with it,” Hiraku groaned. “Of course I don’t know in that bargain-bin budget deck of yours.”

“One of my ‘bargain bin’ Synchros. One that’s gonna hurt. I tribute Taketomborg to special summon Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice from my deck, and when the Dice comes out, I can select a speedroid I control and change its level. Terrortop becomes level four so I can Synchro summon…” Out of the rings and the beacon of light emerged a massive blade, with a humanoid robot seemingly riding the hilt. “Hi-Speedroid Chanbara!”

    ATK: 2000

“And this is supposed to hurt how?” Hiraku said, unimpressed. “You can take out my tuner but it won’t be enough to win, and you still have the Fury of Daedalus to contend with. Two thousand attack won’t help you there.”

Without saying a word, Yushiro played the second card in his hand.

    ATK: 4000, Level 4

Hiraku stood there, looking at the card “Hi-Speed Re-Level” on the field. He didn’t have a witty retort, but he stood there stoic as he looked over the cards on the field and the lifepoints. “Alright then,” he said. “On with it.”

Clear Wing-no, Zetsuei looked back at Yushiro for a moment. They were both relishing the moment. “Battle Phase! Chanbara, cut Fury down to size!”

    ATK: 4200

A moment later, the blade was stabbing through the face of Fury of Daedalus’s nearest head, splitting it neatly in two as Chanbara flew through it at high speed. It then repeated the maneuver with the other three before Fury finally shattered.

    LP: 7200

“I activate Fury’s effect. When he’s sent to the Graveyard I can add one crucible card from my graveyard to my hand, and I choose my fusion spell, Forged in the Crucible,” Hiraku said, plucking the card from his graveyard without looking.

“And now the double tap! See, Chanbara can attack twice. Show Kuanos what that means!” Without stopping, Chanbara flew through Kuanos as well.

    ATK: 4400

    LP: 4300

“And lastly, Clear Wing, why don’t we introduce you to Hiraku personally? Dragon Slash Mirage!” On command, the Dragon took off, flying upward and then, seemingly, disappearing in a haze of afterimages. An instant later Clear Wing reappeared behind his target, arm outstretched as if it had thrown a punch, while simultaneously, a shimmering white slash mark cut across Hiraku’s body. It stung a bit too, enough to leave a mark.

    LP: 1800

Hiraku was left with a set card and nothing else. When the smoke cleared, he could be seen giving Yushiro a scathing glare. “You’re going to regret that,” Hiraku said as the disk indicated it was his turn. He draw a card and looked at it, and in the deathly silent arena he laughed, very loud and very hard.

“Did I just break him?” Yushiro thought to himself as Hiraku laughed for what was arguably far too long. At last Yushiro spoke aloud. “What’s so funny?!”

“Oh, nothing! But let’s just say luck isn’t on your side as well as you think!” Hiraku said, wiping a tear from his eye. “But first, let’s say hi to a new friend! Remember that fusion spell I added to my hand? Well I’m activating it again.” Hiraku placed Forged in the Crucible back on the field. “If I’m summoning a Daedalus fusion monster with this card, I can banish materials from my Graveyard as well. From my Graveyard I use the Fury of Daedalus and the Will of Daedalus as my materials.”

The two past monsters rose from a portal in the field and immediately began to combine in a well of red light in the middle of the field. “Given purpose, an endless rage that will not rest until all before it is laid to ash! Fusion Summon! Level 11!”

As the light cleared, a massive, clawed foot slammed down on the field. As it came into view the Wrath of Daedalus stood as a massive, four-legged dragonic beast whose many tails ended in a series of even more heads, each roaring and filling the arena.

    “The Wrath of Daedalus!”

    ATK: 3300

Hiraku stood there, looking at the monster proudly. “But I’m not done,” he said, without taking his eyes off the creature. “I activate the card Pre-Preparation of Rights, which lets me add a ritual spell to my hand as well as a monster listed on that card. I choose these two.” Hiraku held up two cards in hand, but quickly put them to use. “I then activate Evolution of the Crucible, which lets me banish monsters from my graveyard as materials. I banish Talos and Kuanos from my Graveyard.”

Same as with the fusion spell, both monsters rose from the field, but instead burst into flames, one yellow and the other purple. “Surpass those around you and rise above all others! Stand proud with the world beneath, and display your perfection! Ritual Summon! The Ambition of Daedalus!”

Different than the other bosses, Ambition stood on two feet with an armored, and rather humanoid appearance, yet gilded and highly regal. Sheathed through its armor and neck extended two, massive, golden halberds. Its feet touching gently on the field, arms hanging by its sides, the Ambition of Daedalus quietly stared down at Clear Wing, tendrils of smoke floating lazily from its jagged, glowing mouth.

“You know it’s not often that an opponent will draw out my ace monster, at least you have that to be proud about!” Hiraku laughed.

“Can’t say I didn’t see this coming.”  Yushiro didn’t flinch. He wouldn’t. At least not yet. “Do your worst!”

“My worst? Okay, don’t say you didn’t ask for it! I activate the effect for Wrath of Daedalus. By returning two of my banished monsters, he gains 1000 attack. I choose Talos and Kuanos to return to my Graveyard.”

“Definitely your worst! I activate Clear Wing’s effect, which negate’s Wrath of Daedalus, and then-”

“Did you think I was just going to fall for that?” Hiraku interrupted. “I chain the effect of Ambition! By banishing a dark monster from my Graveyard, I get to negate the effects of one of your monsters and it loses 1000 ATK!”

A portal opened and the Ambition of Daedalus thrust its arm inside, gripping one of the fiend monsters in its claw. The smaller monster shriveled up as purple lights ran up the monster’s arm and into one of the halberds, that began to glow. The Crucible monster turned to ash and the Ambition of Daedalus drew the glowing halberd, hefting it with both hands and holding it up high. Tongues of purple flame lashed across Clear Wing, and soon Ambition was returning the halberd to its rightful place.

    ATK: 1500

“Of course it wasn’t gonna be that easy…”

“There we go, now the stage is set! Battle! Wrath of Daedalus, cut that third-rate dragon down to size!” Each of the giant monster’s mouths began to glow brightly as it took aim at Yushiro’s ace monster. “By the way, did I forget to mention that the battle damage he deals is doubled? Have fun!”

Yushiro winced as Wrath fired. Clear Wing avoided the first blast, but was caught mid dodge by the rest. The force of the impact slammed the dragon into one of the support beams of the building, and the hologram shattered.

    LP: 1100

“But I don’t think you’ve been punished enough!” Hiraku said. “So, now it’s Ambition’s turn to break your stupid toy. Ambition, attack his Speedroid!”

The Ambition of Daedalus spread its arms wide as red lightning crackled in its palms. Even with Chanbara’s attack boost it would be enough as the streams of lightning played across the walls and swept through the synchro monster, leaving nothing but a shower of particles. As Chanbara went to his graveyard, Yushiro banished it.

“When Chanbara’s destroyed, I get to add a banished speedroid back to my hand- I’ll take Panchingo-Kart back.”

    LP: 700

“And now you’re hanging by a thread with not a card on your field, and barely a thing in your hand! Why even bother take another turn? Against these? You should just surrender on the spot! Save yourself the trouble! I end my--”

“Effect, activate! I discard the Kuribohrn in my hand to resurrect a monster that was destroyed by battle this turn, and I’m bringing back Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!” As quickly as it had vanished, the dragon returned, the spirit of the white Kuriboh watching over it as it materialized on the field, and it looked none too pleased about being destroyed. “I didn’t come here just to give up at the end! I came here tonight to prove a point. To prove to you, and every other person watching this game that I deserve to be here! I’m done being your punching bag, Hiraku. Now end your turn so we can finish this duel!”

“Fine! I end my turn!” Hiraku shouted back. “But that stupid dragon won’t be enough! Draw your last pathetic card!” Zetsuei roared back at him, clearly more insulted than Yushiro was.

“Just you watch!” Yushiro closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and drew his card, hoping that it would somehow allow him to pull out a win. He gave it a look. “Alright, here goes nothing. First I’ll play this spell card I just drew. It’s called Shock Surprise. By banishing both the Taketomborgs in my GY, I get to destroy two cards on the field, and I choose both of your Daedalus monsters.”

“I activate Ambition’s other effect! By banishing a Light monster from my grave, I protect my fiend monsters from destruction for the rest of the turn!” Ambition once again reached into a portal and pulled out another of the Crucible monsters tightly, though this time a yellow light drained from the monster into the other halberd as it crumbled to dust. The Ambition of Daedalus then drew the halberd and held it up as a golden light washed over it and Wrath.

“Alright then. Your pal Ambition have any more surprises for me?”

Hiraku only glared. It would be stupid for Yushiro to let himself be baited by any old effect again, but it meant he was in a tough position.

Good. Next up’s a normal summon: remember Panchingo-Kart?” Once again the speedroid was on the field. Clear Wing looked pleased to have a little company. “Anything to say to that?”

“Yeah, like ‘don’t forget Ambition’s effect lasts the whole turn’ before you toss a card hoping to get rid of him or anything stupid,” Hiraku growled.

“Too bad. That was your last chance to stop me from winning.”

    Soundtrack- Yu-Gi-Oh! Skies Theme

Yushiro couldn’t contain himself anymore, and a wide, confident smirk appeared across his face. “This whole game, all you’ve been focussed on was destroying every card I put on the field. You like sitting back behind those huge monsters of yours. Rubbing it in, trying to make me feel small. So I let you, and each time you did, you put more cards in my graveyard- cards that kept me in this game up until now. And last turn, well… you put a game-winning combo in there. Let me show you!”

Yushiro fished Den-den Daiko Duke out of his graveyard. “I can banish Den-Den here to special summon another Speedroid Tuner. I wouldn’t have had anything to do with it before, but since you were kind enough to destroy Chanbara last turn, I got another monster out, which means I have just enough for one last synchro summon. The Tuner I Summon, is Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice!”

“Just get on with it,” Hiraku said.

“When Dice is summoned, I can target a Speedroid and alter its level. Go-Kart goes to level 3, so I can make a level 4 synchro summon. Say hi, Armory Arm!” One more time, through the rings and light, a monster appeared on Yuhsiro’s field. This time a floating, mechanical gauntlet.

    ATK: 1800

“I’m sure you’ve seen this card in the bargain bin before, but in case you forgot, Armory Arm can equip itself to a monster of mine for a 1000 point ATK boost. Try it on, Clear Wing.” The dragon stuck out its claw, and Armory Arm slid over it, sprouting a sixth finger to accommodate Clear Wing’s own extra digit.

    ATK: 3500

“Now knock Ambition’s block off! Vigorous Right Fist- Fukuryu!” Instead of afterimages, Clear Wing flew straight for Ambition as a field of golden energy formed around Armory arm. The punch hit with such force that Ambition smashed into the opposite wall, and had it been more solid, would have left quite the dent in it.

    LP: 1300

“And Armory Arm has an extra effect attached to it, doesn’t it,” Hiraku said, glaring at Yushiro.

“You bet. You take damage equal to the destroyed monster’s ATK. And that’s game.”

    LP: 0

Hiraku had already turned around and was storming off from his platform as his lifepoint counter drained to zero, and the winner was announced in a flashy display, the banquet hall erupting in a deafening chorus of cheers.

Yushiro hopped onto Clear Wing’s tail as the dragon looped back around, and flew over toward Hiraku’s end of the arena. “Hey, wait!” he called over, offering his hand.

Hiraku paused at the doorway and turned, shooting Yushiro one more glare. “This isn’t over,” he said, opening the door and disappearing through it.

“But… It was a good game.….” he said, his hand still outstretched.
