    Apparently this is true, but it was the nineties and the movie hadn't confirmed just how gay they were yet. I dunno, I wasn't there.

      if ryuko is the utena analog then mako is wakaba, which tracks pretty well besides the fact that wakaba forgets about her "boyfriend" like everyone else.

      like, wakaba is bi, sure, and utena is obviously some sort of wlw depending on your read, but they don't end up gay for each other.
