  1. “Do I look like a ‘team spirit’ sort of person” seemed like such a loaded question to Peter, like, “No,” was the obvious answer, but who was he to say what sort of life Coach Clara lived? He’d only really known her for, like, a few weeks, after all. Instead of verbally responding to the question, then, he kind of just shrunk in his seat a little bit more, and while David tried to console him, it wasn’t about that. He still said, “Thanks,” but his heart wasn’t really in it. Whichever answer was correct, Hana clearly had enough team spirit to compensate for all of them. Still, Peter felt like he had to jump in. “Fish? I didn’t think our team was the ‘Horizon Fish,’ I thought we were the-” he said, before being cut off by more of Hana’s antics. In truth, Peter realized, she probably had enough spirit for both teams combined. Meanwhile, all he could really do was clap along. It was something, at least. He settled in a bit more comfortably this time, awaiting the duel to follow, when another voice chimed in with comfort as well. “Worry not, Lord of Dragons --” (it took a moment for Peter to realize this meant him) “-- You’ve trained your entire life for this! As a hero of light, you’ll trounce your enemies with unrivaled power just as it seems they have the upper hand!” There was more, but that was the gist, and it stood out a bit more than the others for obvious reasons, and Peter turned to face the speaker directly. “Oh, yeah, uh, Terry, right?” he said. “I mean, I’m not inconfident, or, uh, unconfident, whichever it is, it’s just like a pit in your stomach, you know? I’ll be fine once the duels start going.” He mentally added an “I hope” to the end of that sentence, but he didn’t say it out loud. The addition also made him realize exactly what he’d just said. “Uh, that probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, sorry. Especially to someone like you who’s confident all the time, huh?”

  5. A lot of the Drooling Dragon, Chris observed, was still the same, from the clientele to how it was lit to the feeling of the ground beneath his feet. In fairness, it had only been about an hour since they left at all, so the static nature of the bar was almost something to be expected. Even the smell -- that grimy, sweaty, dank stench that reminded Chris that, as long as he could still perceive it, he wasn’t completely gone -- was unchanged. Still, it was good to be back, and Chris couldn’t help but saunter over to the bar right up to Hector, and say, “Two pieces of good news for you: first, I’m alive, and second,” he jammed a thumb Estellise’s way. “She’s already said she’s paying.” “Ha, you learn fast not to look a gift family in the mouth,” Hector said, which was a weird sentiment because what was Estellise going to do, pray him to death? Well, that wasn’t quite true, Chris had seen Estellise’s magic in action, but also, like, come on. Especially when, like he said, she was offering, “Just be sure not to promise her anything in return. Welcome back, good to see you didn't bite it early.” “‘Kids these days, all thinking they’re invincible.’” He wasn’t quoting Hector directly, it was just an amalgamation of paraphrases he’d heard his whole life. “Maybe I still do, but at least I can take care of myself.” Chris had enough respect for Hector to avoid rolling his eyes, fortunately, and toned down the swagger as he placed an order. “Anyway, uh, I know she said, ‘Let us feast,’ but I figure we could just start with some drinks and we’ll see how things go from there, yeah?” He waved back at the rest of the group. “Grab a table,” he said, raising his voice to make sure they heard him. “I’ll be right over.”
  6. I Think It’s Time We Blow This Scene Caleb could feel the hostility in the dog’s voice. It obviously wasn’t directed at him, or, if it was, it was in an “I don’t need more work right now” sort of way, which he could respect. Everyone who’d ever provided anything had been there, and he was no exception. Even still, being pushed down Hinder’s agenda only let the other simmering resentments come to the surface, and his mood quickly soured right around to where it’d been just moments ago. He shouted after the dog. “I mean, you’ll know it when you see it. Aren’t too many swords like it on the island- in all Naviim, even. So just keep an eye out, okay? But yeah, I’ll be there.” Get Everybody’s Stuff Together Aiden had wished the watchdog the best luck he could, and that was nice and all, but he dared not watch the confrontation further. There was something cursed about Simon Weatherson in his mind, and the less he had to deal with him or his ilk, the better. That was his secret, that was why he felt compelled to inform others of Galatea’s ills. Someone had to do it, he just always hoped it would not be him. All he wanted to do was manage the flame. But, just like that, the impulse came back. Galatea was without water. It was not a problem he was personally equipped to solve, but he was in a position to inform someone, anyone, at least. The council was still in a meeting, of course, and they didn’t appreciate being interrupted, especially by him. A dog? There were many of them on the island, sure, but at least one was otherwise occupied, and who knew where the others were. His thoughts were jumbled as a young woman (or perhaps she wasn’t? She certainly looked like she’d seen better days) stumbled right into him. “My goodness, are you alright?” Aiden said. “I am, thank you. Excuse me.” It wasn’t very convincing. But there was also something about her that told Aiden that, no matter how hard he tried, she wasn’t about to accept any offer he gave, so he let her go, muttering a quick blessing under his breath as she went. When he looked back up, though, he saw the answer to his- well, they weren’t his most recent prayers, but it was exactly what he was looking for. Taros’ watchdog, Kitt, had just stepped into the square, and Aiden wasted no time in rushing over. “You were just with the council, right?” he said. “Are they aware of the water troubles?” As the question left his lips, a darker scenario entered his mind. He could fathom someone serving the gods’ watchdogs breakfast not wanting to mention any sort of shortage. And as soon as he thought that, he couldn’t help but ask further. “Galatea’s spring is dry. Did you know?” Okay 3, 2, 1, Let’s Jam Maybe it had been a mistake to go so far as to steal a sword, especially one that would be missed as soon as the sun came up, and especially with so many alternatives neatly organized in a row back at home. But, on the other hand, it wasn’t like she was about to go back to a house full of statues and bad memories until she could properly excise such things, and, like she had told the watchdog the night before, this was the only method available to her. Such were the thoughts playing over and over again in Emily’s mind as she relentlessly paced the outskirts of the temple square. Sleep was for people who didn’t have revenge on the mind. Or justice. Or whatever it was, whatever had necessitated getting used to the sword’s weight and making sure she could conceal it well enough to not draw attention until she was ready to strike. It didn’t need to be perfect, it just needed to be good enough to work once. Finding Simon, determining where he would be when his time came had been where another large portion of her night had gone. He’d moved on from Taros, obviously, but she didn’t want to risk blindly barging into more temples if she could help it. The more temple doors she threw open, the more attention she was bound to Of course, the lack of sleep certainly didn’t help. Nor did the shot nerves. Fortunately, in her pacing, wandering the streets of Galatea, she’d come across a few errant threads of conversation, rumors of a water shortage. It was enough to latch onto, she’d decided. Unless he was in Medeis’ temple, but that was the backup plan no matter what she chose. All that was left now was the actual doing, itself split into several mini-tasks. She had to cross the square, she had to reveal the sword tucked away, and she had to leap forward and strike the demagogue down. It was as simple as that, really. But it wasn’t like her nerves had improved over time, especially now that she needed food in addition to sleep. She was sure her reflection was a wreck of what she’d been but a day ago. “But a day ago.” That was when Myria’s watchdog had taken her in and shown Emily her future. That was the thing bolstering her resolve now. And it was that, more than anything else, that finally got her legs to start carrying her to Dia’s temple. It still was not a smooth journey, despite being in a straight line. Concealing the sword affected Emily’s gait enough to keep her in a perpetual stumble, and she very nearly ran into… was that Lar’s high priest? It didn’t matter, the only thing that did was moving forward. Step by step. The doors were already open, that was good. As she drew closer, Emily could even see inside. Simon was there, she could see that now. So were his attendants -- those had always been an “after” problem in her mind. The final body, though, that was cause for alarm. It was Nuumu’s watchdog, and she was… guiding, it seemed, Simon out of the temple. The dog was leading him somewhere. He was under her protection, surely. This was the watchdog she’d told, after all. Emily’s legs wouldn’t stop moving, though, until finally, she managed a reasonable confrontation distance and simply said, “What are you doing to him?” OOC

New Revolutionary Girl Utena blog post as we cross the halfway point of the show.

  8. ←Previous Post -- Next Post→ Duel 20 -- Wakaba Flourishing Or: You Know That Episode Of Kill la Kill Where Ryuko Has To Fight Mako? Yeah It’s Kind Of Like That One of the perks, I imagine, of being a twenty-plus-year-old anime with a still-active fanbase is that said fanbase can easily provide demand for a whole bunch of additive material. I’ve mentioned the other adaptations -- especially the musicals -- at length before, but there’s also new merch, new commentary, and, today’s topic, remasters on the old material. If you’ve been watching along, you’ve likely been using the Nozomi Entertainment links I’ve been using at the top and bottom of each page. This isn’t actually the original mastering of the show, however; Nozomi’s parent company, Right Stuf, didn’t acquire the license until 2010. In addition to a newer translation, many of the sound effects, from the arena bells to Nanami getting hit in the face with a baseball, were changed in the remaster, and even Utena’s Japanese voice actress, Tomoko Kawakami returned to redub some specific lines. On the whole, I find these changes to be a net positive for the show. I mean, this is the version I first experienced Utena through, so there is definitely a little bias there, but even in the one case where I wish they’d kept the old footage, I can’t say it negatively affects my viewing experience by having been changed (unfortunately, it’s in the final episode, so I can’t say more than that). Even then, the colors still pop, and everything that needs to work still does, so I personally judge it worthy. And this isn’t even the final (or “final”) version of the show; it was remastered again for Blu-ray in 2018, and that’s a version of the show I haven’t gotten to see yet. As I understand it, there weren’t as many drastic changes -- the show had already moved from film to digital in the first remaster. What changes there were, too, were largely in the subtitles, and many came from reaching out to the fan community in trying to decipher the exact nuance of some of the more enigmatic lines of the show. Again, I haven’t experienced this particular version, but I’m sure it’s just as good as anything else. ”Wakaba, you’re the most normal girl I know,” Utena said. People tend not to want to be normal, though, especially as teenagers, and Wakaba is no exception to this rule. One interpretation, in fact, is that Wakaba and Utena became friends because of the former’s desire to at least feel special by proxy. It’s an interpretation I like because of how it causes Wakaba to also more directly serve as Saionji’s foil. Remember, Saionji is after Anthy because of how he believes Touga will treat him once he has something eternal. Similarly, neither Wakaba nor Saionji really treat their respective partners as people with actual agency. Wakaba might say she promises to work on getting Saionji reinstated at Ohtori Academy, but is that really something in her power? Besides, she realizes all too quickly that the relationship she does have is temporary, and this is before Mikage sweeps in to remove any hope she might have had. With this line of thinking, it likely would be better in Wakaba’s mind to keep Saionji there indefinitely, or, at least, for as long as she can. C-ko the Shadow Play Girl prompts Utena to ask, “What’s wrong with being single?” But at the same time, isn’t there an expectation to be in a relationship? Isn’t that what the world demands? Even the show seems to think so, as evidenced by how Wakaba comes home to an empty dorm room in the denouement, which makes Utena’s line stand out all the more. One might imagine this as Utena coming from a place of privilege. She’s so enamored with finding her prince again that she cannot fathom anything else. Plus, like it or not, she has Anthy as well. There is an interesting fun fact, actually, about her and Anthy’s relationship that comes up in this episode. We’ve already established that she prefers to do away with honorifics, or at least doesn’t like being called “Utena-sama.” So it’s not exactly a shock to the audience that she refuses to draw the Sword of Dios on Wakaba here by saying “Himemiya… I can’t…” But that wasn’t the original line, it was one of the ones Tomoko Kawakami rerecorded. The original was “Anthy…”, which one could interpret as a much more intimate sentiment, far more than the two have demonstrated on screen, in any case. One final thing I want to draw attention to is the leaf hairpin that Saionji initially crafts Wakaba. Seeing Anthy with it is Wakaba’s breaking point, yes, and the audience can infer how Anthy ended up with it through Mikage’s dialog with Saionji, but it is also shown being incinerated by Souji at the end of the episode. It’s not presented with any sort of remark, but it’s clearly there, with the hope that, with three episodes left in the arc, the audience might wonder how it came back in Mikage’s possession. Did Anthy give it back, and, if so, how often are she and Souji Mikage in contact? Just something to think about. -r Next time: Everybody gets an episode! Even her! ←Previous Post -- Link to Episode -- Next Post→
  9. I'm on Chrome, so I don't know if this'll be the exact same experience, but: Clicking "save" should download a ".json" file, correct? This is what the card maker uses when you want to reopen or make edits to a saved card. If you want to save a picture of the card for, you know, whatever else, you should just be able to click on the image of the card itself, which will download a .png file, a format Windows 10 should be happier with.
  10. I have Crypt, Terraria, and Undertale on Steam, as well as DS cartriges of the PWAA trilogy, so probably not those but I'll definitely look more into Cadence of Hyrule, Baba is You, and Goose, thanks!
